Hi guys, Ducati has finally started building the hotly-anticipated and all-new 1199 Panigale superbike at the Bologna factory this week.

The Panigale is the all-new 200bhp 1200cc V-twin superbike the firm hopes will revolutionise the class when it's launched in two weeks' time in Dubai.

This latest news means the bike is in full production as the Italian firm attempts to meet a massive number of orders from around the world for the bike.

Hundreds of orders for the bike have already been taken with waiting time for the bike expected to mean the bike will sell out for 2012.

North America is Top Ducati Market

Hi guys, Paul here again. Riding on a wave of excellent sellers like the Multistrada and the Diavel, Ducati has cornered North America as its biggest market in 2011.

With an increase of 41%, the North American Market has topped Ducati’s revenue for the first time beating out even the home Italian market.

Will the demand keep Ducati’s flowing across the sea to North America? New special edition models like the Diavel Cromo and AMG are likely to pique interest, but a 1199 Panigale, expected in showrooms by early April, and the ever popular Monster can certainly keep it.

Ducati North America also plans to revamp its image and corporate identity. “Everything needs to be clean and clear, and very accessible… because it’s your passion…” says Ducati North America’s General Manager Dominique Cheraki. He expects 70% of dealers will also make a change in décor to showcase the Ducati products in the new shopping experience.

Here’s our fist set of shots from the 50th running of the Rolex 24 at Daytona. It has been a great time and after 6+ hours of racing Porsche leads the GT class. Leads swapping, Ferrari’s taking each other out and the Audi R8 GRAND-AMs are getting broken in, literally. However that is not unexpected it is a wonderful site to finally see the Audi R8 in race form here in the U.S.

APR Motorsports race report from the BMW Performance 200

With the rain falling steadily at the start of the BMW Performance 200, APR Motorsport made the calculated decision to start their cars at the back of their respective fields. With 81 cars starting in the CTSCC race in the rain at Daytona – split between the GS and ST classes – the team was betting on a fair amount of opening-lap carnage and chose to keep its rookie drivers clear of the inevitable carnage.

Amazingly, the opening lap had no serious collisions, off-course excursions, or full-course yellows. The shock from the assembled crowd and everyone crowding around a TV monitor in the pits was palpable.

Starting shotgun on the GS field, Nelson Canache steadily moved the no. 41 APR Tuned Audi S4 through the field throughout the wet first portion of the race. With the Audi S4′s four-wheel-drive system, Canache drove from 40th to 15th before the first caution period of the race slowed his progress. However, the car developed a mechanical problem that took several laps to fix, dropping Canache well off the lead lap. Once handing the car over to teammate Ian Baas, Baas took the car to the finish in 33rd position.

“The Audi is a really good car, and it was amazing in the rain,” said Canache. “I almost wish the team had let me start the race from our position where we qualified, but I understand why we started at the back. I think we could have been leading the race before our first pit stop. The problem we had with the car was really too bad, but I think Ian and I will be fighting for wins in the Audi S4 this year.”

Among the quartet of APR Tuned VW’s in the ST class, there was a fair amount of inter-team rivalry for the highest-finishing driver – especially as the four cars started lined up nose-to-tail. David Cheng, in the no. 171 APR Tuned VW GTI, passed 23 cars during the opening stint before his car developed a mechanical problem, sidelining him and teammate Aleks Altberg after a strong run.

It would be Hector Guerrero, in the no. 191 APR Tuned VW Jetta GLI that was started by Juan Pablo Sierra, that would cross the line 22nd in the ST class, just ahead of teammate Daniel LaRiva in the no. 181 APR tuned VW Jetta GLI that was started by Christian Perez.

“I had one moment where I was battling with another car into the bus stop, and I had to go off through the dirt,” said Guerrero. “I did what Alex Popow did last year in the Daytona Prototype. Other than that, the car was good. We had a little bit of a push, and somehow I lost the rear bumper, but I was really happy with the car. It felt better and better each lap and I’m really happy that we finished our first race.”

“Since this was our first race and I didn’t have much time in the car, I just wanted to drive without making mistakes,” said LaRiva. “So I didn’t push too hard, I thought it would be dangerous to push. Each lap I got a little more confident in the car, and I can tell it will be a very fast car in ST after some more testing.”

The no. 161 APR Tuned VW GTI lost two laps to the leader due to confusion under separate yellow-flag periods. The car was started by Juan Carlos Alvarez, who then turned it over to Nate Norenberg, with Josh Hurley finishing the race. Despite being two laps down, Hurley’s laptimes showed the car has the pace of the top-five cars in the ST field.

“The car was amazing,” said Hurley. “I knew it was fast but it was really fast and really consistent – it’s a car that can win in ST. I wish we didn’t have our problems under yellow because if we had been on the lead lap, we would have scored a lot of points. I’m excited about the potential of this car for the rest of the year.”

While the results weren’t as strong as the APR Motorsport team was hoping for, there were a few positives that the team took away from Friday’s BMW Performance 200.

“Our goal for this race was to run without problems and to get our cars and drivers through a race distance,” said Jeff Mishtawy, Director of Motorsports for APR. “We are obviously not happy that we had problems with the Audi S4 and with one of our VW GTI’s, but we showed a lot of speed from those cars. All of our drivers drove smart and brought the cars back safely, and we are really encouraged by what we learned with our new VW Jetta GLI’s. We’ll go back and apply what we have learned and come back for the next race, and compete further up the field like the APR Motorsports team normally does.”

The BMW Performance 200 will be broadcast on SPEED on February 4th at 12:00 PM ET. The next race for the APR Motorsports CTSCC team will be at Barber Motorsports Park on March 31, while the team will also compete in their first Rolex 24 at Daytona which begins Saturday, January 27th at 3:30 PM ET and will be broadcast live on SPEED.

Flying Lizard Porsche Fourth in GT for Rolex 24 At Daytona

Patrick Long qualified the No 45 Flying Lizard Porsche 911 GT3 Cup fourth in GT for Saturday’s Rolex 24 At Daytona. With 42 GT cars on track for the 15-minute qualifying session today, Long clocked the fourth-fastest time of 1:49.550. The No. 59 Brumos Racing Porsche took the GT pole with a time of 1:49.342.

Long commented on the result, “I’m pretty happy with how qualifying ended up for us. It was a trying day: we fought some car issues in the first session and had to cut the second session short for repairs. So to have everything come together for a top- five result is a good morale booster for the race.”

A total of 46 cars are entered in GT representing a diverse group of manufacturers. Long added, “With such a large GT field, the race is going to be extremely hectic: it’s definitely the largest GT field I’ve ever raced in. I am sure it will be a race of attrition but I also expect there to be a significant number of top cars fighting for the GT win at the end.”

For the 24-hour endurance classic, Long (USA) will be joined by Joerg Bergmeister (Germany), Mike Rockenfeller (Germany), and Seth Neiman (USA). Bergmeister and Long are Porsche factory drivers and co-drivers of the team’s No. 45 Porsche in the American Le Mans Series. Rockenfeller has been an Audi Factory driver since 2007; this will be his first race with the Lizards since the 2004 Rolex 24, in which he finished second in GT in the No. 74 Porsche. Neiman is Flying Lizard team principal and drives the team’s No. 44 ALMS Porsche.

For Paul Miller Racing, the Rolex 24 at Daytona couldn’t start any better. Pole position would be great but 10th on grid is pretty nice looking at the race from afar. The no48 Chopard Porsche GT3 showed strong pace in the two practice sessions they participated in. During practice 3 a 1:49.653 was well within the top times.

All four drivers of the No. 48 Chopard Porsche GT3 from Paul Miller Racing know the feeling of standing on the podium after 24 hours of racing at Daytona International Speedway.

That’s why all four drivers – Bryce Miller, Sascha Maassen, Rob Bell and Mark Wilkins – are so hungry as they head to Daytona for this week’s world-renowned twice-around-the-clock enduro, which takes the green flag on Saturday, January 28 at 3:30 p.m. ET. They’ve all been tantalizingly close to victory, but none have taken home the top prize. Yet.

Bryce Miller has finished second in the GT class twice in his five previous starts in the Daytona 24 Hours. He led 49 laps en route to a runner-up result for the No. 48 Paul Miller Racing team last year and led 26 laps in a second-place GT performance in 2008.

He and the team will benefit from a full year of experience under their belts after running as an essentially new team in 2011. They should be encouraged by competitive, top-10 lap times in pre-event testing at Daytona earlier this month.

“I am very excited for the 24-hour race this year,” said Miller. “We are coming off of a second-place finish at this event from last year and have had this entire past season to grow as a team. Consequently we’re bringing more cohesiveness, experience and intensity – all qualities that will play to our favor – in this year’s race. The newly issued shortened fuel windows places an emphasis on pit strategy and pit stops for this year’s event and our team is ready for these challenges. I am supremely confident in our driver lineup as well, and are honored to be in the presence of such professional talent.”

Indeed, the GT class in the 2012 Daytona 24 hours features a whopping 46 cars and a who’s who of international racing talent. That isn’t lost on Maassen, who will make his 13th start in the Daytona 24 Hours this year. He looks to build on a previous best result of third, which came in the GT class in 2009, and he’s confident in the team’s ability to run up front this year.

“This is going to be the toughest 24 Hours of Daytona that I can remember,” said Maassen. “There are a lot of good drivers, cars and teams in GT, so the challenge is there and we are ready to be part of it. I am proud to be part of one of the teams with a good chance to win this race. Thank you Paul Miller Racing!”

Bell returns to Paul Miller Racing for the first time since playing a key role in the team’s runner-up performance last year. The two-time Le Mans Series champion acquitted himself well in his maiden Daytona race last year. But like his teammates, he’s looking for a little bit more this time around.

“Our test went very well,” Bell said. “The new car felt great. We learned lots about it and all drivers felt at home straightaway. We also showed our pace was there or thereabouts. I’m looking forward to the race and going head to head with an amazing field of competitors. Reliability will be our strong point and with such great teammates I expect to be fighting for the win.”

The lone newcomer to the team’s driver lineup is accomplished Canadian racer Mark Wilkins. But Wilkins is no stranger to the Daytona 24 Hours, as this will be his eighth time in the prestigious race. He has raced in the Daytona Prototype class for the last five years, but he returns to GT this year and enjoyed his best success in the 24 hours in a GT car with a third-place run in 2005, his debut race.

“It’s almost time to go racing and after a successful test at the beginning of the month, I couldn’t be more excited to get back behind the wheel,” Wilkins said. “The No. 48 Paul Miller Racing Porsche GT3 ran great at the test and I know the crew has been working very hard to prep the perfect race car for this weekend. With lots of strong competition and this being the 50th running of the Rolex 24, everyone will be trying hard to win that watch and we will be no exception. This team knows how to race Daytona and I’m thrilled to get racing in pursuit of the top step of the podium.”

Not more than 4 weeks ago, Oryx Racing took delivery of their Audi R8 GRAND-AM. The R8 GRAND-AM does not come race ready out of the box and with little test data, the Oryx Racing crew put in a great performance. The team placed 15th in the strong and stacked GT field.

“Overall we are very pleased with the result in qualifying” Team Principal and number 1 driver, Humaid al Masaood, commented. “We have had very little running since we took delivery of the car at the beginning of the month so there are a lot of variables we are working with, a new car, a new circuit, a banked section to that circuit and of course a new driver in the team, Saeed al Mehairi. I am delighted with the way the team have responded to some many simultaneous challenges and we have out qualified the other Audi R8 team, APR, so that is very satisfying.”

“Its a long race and really qualifying does not have that much influence on the outcome, its just glory points” quipped Steven Kane. “As long as we keep out of trouble in the first few laps while the field sorts itself out we have as good a chance as anyone. I’m looking forward to getting the race underway and finding out where we really sit compared to the other GT cars”

A strong performance by Andrew Davis secured pole for the no59 Brumos Racing Porsche GT3. A 1:49.342 would do it and top the no69 AIM Autosport/Team FXDD Ferrari 458 Italia with a very close 1:49.357.

“It was an intense session,” said Davis, who was bumped from the provisional pole three times before regaining it for good with two minutes left. “I just pushed it as hard as I could from the first lap out.”

Our good friend and Altanta local, Andy Lally, dropped the no44 Magnus Racing Porsche GT3 into third with a 1:49.388.

The entry from Flying Lizard Motorsports landed in 4th with a 1:49.550.

no62 Risi Competition Ferrari 458 was 5th.

The two Audi R8′s are definitely feeling the new entry challenges.

As the last bolts were checked and final graphics applied, the Magnus Racing haulers containing both entries for this year's historic 50th Rolex 24 at Daytona are headed to the beautiful shores of Daytona Beach, Florida, in preparation for North America's most important sportscar event of the year.

Running two cars in the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series for the first time in team history, Magnus Racing has already established a great reputation at Daytona. Finishing fifth in their debut event in 2010, and following it up last year just one position short of a podium, the team heads to the 50th running with two cars capable of achieving top results.

"We were very fortunate to have a solid, damage-free test two weeks ago," stated John Potter, Team Owner and Driver of the no. 44. "As a result, during these last couple of weeks we've been able to just focus on prepping and getting the cars perfect for the race. The guys have worked hard these past few days getting ready, and I feel very confident headed in to the weekend."

In what is widely regarded as the most competitive GT field in the history of the event, the Magnus Racing no. 44 Porsche GT3 Cup showed great promise during the Roar Before the 24 test held earlier this month. Consistently challenging in the top-five on the time sheets, the combination of season-long teammates John Potter and Andy Lally, combined with Porsche specialists Richard Lietz and Renee Rast, proved formidable.

For Andy Lally, in pursuit of his fourth Rolex 24 victory, cautious optimism is the dominant theme.

"This is a very, very strong team but we have to stay focused," stated Lally. "During the test, it's very tough to truly know what everyone is capable of. There's easily 15 cars that could win this thing. Luckily, we're right in the thick of it, so we're just going to have to play a very smart and patient race. Luckily we've got a fantastic team and great group of teammates to get us there."

Not to be out-done, the Magnus Racing No. 4 eBay Motors/Children's Tumor Foundation/Racing4Research Porsche GT3 Cup heads to the event equally confident in a strong race. Following a relatively trouble-free test, the combination of Ryan Eversley, Justin Bell, Daniel Graeff, and Ron Yarab proved equally capable, with the team also setting lap times within the top-10.

Racing for more than just a watch, the team is using this effort as a means to raise donations and awareness for children suffering from neurofibromatosis. NF affects one in every 3,000 children, more than cystic fibrosis, Duchenne muscular dystrophy and Huntington's disease combined, and can lead to a wide variety of complications, including blindness, bone abnormalities, cancer, deafness, disfigurement, learning disabilities and excruciating and disabling pain.

Beyond charity, the no. 4 car will also be a constant source of attention as team driver Justin Bell, also known for his on-screen exploits on SPEED as well as eBay's "The World's Fastest Car Show," will act as SPEED's in-race reporter, in which he'll literally provide on-air insight and commentary while driving the no. 4.

For Daniel Graeff, who has been with the CTF program for four years, the 50th Rolex promises to be the best event yet.

"The team has really put together a terrific program," stated Graeff. " On the track, the performance of the team has simply been fantastic. We have a car very capable of top results. For our program of course, there's more at stake than just results, and with Magnus we've found a team also capable of helping draw a lot of attention and support to our program."

Indeed, beyond the presence of over 100 children and families who will appear trackside as "NF heroes" for the foundation, as well as Justin Bell's in race reporting, Magnus Racing and CTF, in participation with Ustream and eBay Motors, will also present a live, 24-hour interactive Ustream webcast throughout the entirety of the race. Hosted by CTF's Jill Beck and Sean Heckman of The Media Barons, Magnus Racing's "Live at Daytona!" can be viewed on magnusracing.com or racing4research.org. The team encourages everyone to log in, watch, and chat live with the drivers, personnel, and other notables throughout the race.

"The Ustream webcast adds an extra element of interactivity for our fans," stated Jill Beck of The Children's Tumor Foundation. "We were involved in a very similar program last year and it really added great value, and we're thrilled to work with the same producing group who've brought the service to Magnus Racing."

Between contending for victory, live on-air commentary on SPEED, and even producing a full-time, interactive Ustream webcast, Magnus Racing is headed in to a very busy week.

"It's going to be a busy few days, but it's the biggest event of the season," stated Potter. "We open the season with our marque event, and for the 50th running we wanted to make sure Magnus Racing's presence was known."

Magnus Racing's "Live from Daytona!" will be at every practice and qualifying session starting on Thursday, January 26 at 10AM ET, with of course the big event beginning Saturday, January 28, at 3:30PM ET.

APR Motorsport fields six cars for 2012 GRAND-AM season

What is there not to love about APR Motorsport? They offer some of the best Audi and Volkswagen performance products money can buy, period. Now, APR Motorsport will field the largest VW / Audi racing program on our shores. 1 Audi S4, 2 VW GTIs, 2 VW Jettas and 1 badass Audi R8 Grand Am.

Augmenting the previously announced no. 41 APR Tuned Audi S4 for Ian Baas and Nelson Canache in the GS class, as well as the no. 171 APR Tuned VW GTI for Aleks Altberg and David Cheng, the team will add three additional VW’s in the ST class for the 2012 season, beginning with this Friday’s BMW Performance 200 at Daytona International Speedway. The team will add yet another car to the lineup beginning with the series’ second race at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama, bringing the team’s CTSCC total to six cars and making APR Motorsport, along with its entry in the Rolex Series, the largest team this season in GRAND-AM.

As part of the expansion, the team will roll out a pair of brand new Mk. 6 VW Jetta GLI’s for this week’s BMW Performance 200 at Daytona. The team shook down the first Jetta at the CTSCC’s January Test Days at Daytona International Speedway, where initial feedback from the drivers was overwhelmingly positive.

Rookies Hector Guerrero and Juan Pablo Sierra Lendle, from Puebla, Mexico, will steer the new no. 181 APR Tuned VW Jetta GLI. Lendle is no stranger to racing VWs, as he scored a win and numerous podiums in the VW TDI Cup USA in 2010, and has also competed in Mexico’s Formula 2000 powered by Volkswagen. He comes to APR after winning the 2011 Gran Turismo Turbo championship in Mexico, with two wins. Guerrero is a veteran of the Venezuelan GT class championship, and took the championship in 2008.

Fellow rookies Daniel LaRiva, from Anzoatequi, Venezuela and Christian Perez, from Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela, will be driving the no. 191 APR Tuned VW Jetta GLI in their first season in the CTSCC. LaRiva scored two wins in 2011 in Venezuela’s Super Touring GT championship, while Perez finished third in the Venezuelan South Eastern GT championship.

Returning to APR for a full season in the ST class, Nate Norenberg, from Plymouth, Minnesota, will be joined by Juan Carlos Alvarez, from Maracay, Venezuela, in the no. 161 APR Tuned VW GTI. Norenberg finished second in his debut with APR last season at Watkins Glen after beginning his professional driving career in the VW TDI Cup, while Alvarez brings a long history of sportscar, endurance racing, and Seat Leon Supercup experience to his rookie season in GRAND-AM.

“It was, without a doubt, a massive undertaking for us to field this many cars in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge,” said Jeff Mishtawy, Director of Motorsports for APR. “There have been many long nights at the shop in preparation for Daytona, but it will be a very impressive sight with our cars lined up in the pits and together on track. Each of our cars will be capable of getting race wins and continuing APR’s competitive tradition in the CTSCC. We have won races and contended for the championship each season we have raced in the CTSCC, and our APR Tuned GTI’s and Jettas are more than capable of doing it again in 2012.”

APR’s winning record in the CTSCC is what has attracted a number of international drivers to the program in 2012. While the team has grown to accommodate the number of drivers, the staff at APR has also had to brush up on a new language to prepare for the new season.

“It is very exciting that we have attracted a large number of international drivers to our program,” said Mishtawy. “In testing, we’ve seen that they clearly have the speed and talent to drive at this level, and we will be working closely with them to develop them into winning endurance drivers. At the same time, our entire staff – and our North American drivers Nate, David, Aleks and Ian – is now learning Spanish!”

APR Motorsport’s five car CTSCC team will compete in the season-opening CTSCC race, the BMW Performance 200, this Friday at Daytona International Raceway. The race will be broadcast Saturday, February 4th, at 12:00 PM ET on SPEED Channel.

Oryx Racing Audi R8 Grand Am livery reveal

We are very excited to see another Audi R8 Grand Am entry. If you recall, Oryx Racing ran a B09/86 LMP Coupe in the American Le Mans Series. For 2012 they have switched gears and joined the Audi Customer Racing program. Along with APR Motorsports, these will be the first racing Audi R8 to hit the U.S. The livery looks outstanding and we can’t wait to bring you more this weekend!

Oryx Racing, the Abu Dhabi based international race team, will continue to compete in the USA in 2012. “Sports car racing in America is very competitive and professional so it offers us a challenging environment in which to develop as a team and as drivers.” said Humaid al Masaood Team Principal and Number 1 driver.

For 2012 Oryx will race in the Rolex Grand Am series in an Audi R8 Grand Am as part of the Audi Customer Racing program. The championship consists of 13 races starting with the 50th running of the legendary Rolex 24 at Daytona.

“Grand Am is the up and coming sports car series in the USA at the moment, grids are increasing and it has a great TV package with most races covered live on Speed TV delivering huge audiences. We enjoyed racing in ALMS last year but we felt it was time for a new challenge.” explained Commercial Manager, Jonathan Tait.

“The Rolex 24 at Daytona is one of the worlds most famous endurance races; it is a great honor to be competing in the 50th running of the race.” Humaid said, “I enjoy 24hr races having done the Dubai 24hr several times and the team are good a delivering and maintaining a reliable car. We have not had much time with the car yet but we will take a pragmatic approach to the race and hopefully will still be in it and running well by hour 24″

“The car was only delivered in early January so we have not had much time to run it or work on it yet.” explained Team Manager, Tom Maplethorpe. “Having said that the build quality direct from Audi Customer Racing is exceptionally high, it really was ready to hit the track straight out of the box, it seems like they build their race cars to the same quality assurance standards as their road cars!”

“I cant wait to get stuck into the 24hr in this car”, quipped Steven Kane, number 2 driver, “The Audi R8 has proved itself a great GT car in Europe and it has loads of grip and strong brakes. It would have been good for the team to have more time with it but the 24hr will gives us a lot of data and a good understanding of the car and we expect to be very competitive across the season”

GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE Official Trailer

Hey guys, Jon here again. Yamaha's 200bhp V-Max is the two-wheeled star of the new Ghost Rider movie due out shortly, replacing the custom Harley-Davidson that featured in the original film.

The sequel, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, stars Nicolas Cage as the motorcycle-riding, spontaneously combusting anti-hero, Johnny Blaze who is still struggling with the curse of being the Devil's bounty hunter.

This time he's aboard a V-Max and is recruited by a secret sect to save a young boy from the devil, which could be Blaze's chance to rid himself of the curse forever.

As with all movie motorcycles, and the nature of some of the stunts, means that in some scenes disguised Kawasaki KX motocross bikes will be used.

24H Dubai 2012 Gallery

Here’s our first set of images from the 24H Dubai. After 10+ hours of racing, we’ve seen a good number of lead changes and only one DNF from the AF Corse Ferrari. At the moment, the Mercedes SLS AMG GT3′s have been strong and running at the top for while now. Porsche has been absent from the front running but there are now 5 in the top ten. Lamborghini’s have slowly exited the top 10 but one is currently running 11th. United Autosport’s two Audi R8 GT3 LMS have been running well and currently 14/16th.

What’s up people? Here is the sequel to the Icon original video: Motorcycle vs. Car Drift Battle. Nick ‘Apex’ Brocha is back and this time he brought his Empire teammate, Ernie Vigil.

The two are mounted on a pair of crackling Triumph Speed Triples, built by Roaring Toyz for the sole purpose of going sideways. Over the last year their quest to find the ultimate drifting playground has led them to the rolling hills of High Plains County. Low traffic, perfect asphalt and endless twisties have kept them busy resurfacing roads with their rear tires for weeks. The only problem is the local authorities have had enough. Enter Police Officer Dan Brockett, the only man with the muscle to keep these two in sight. His 550 horsepower Ford Mustang Cobra was built for speed and he’s got a license to use it. Check it out.

Kawasaki ER-6f 2012 Official Video

Hey, what’s going on guys? Here is the 2012 Kawasaki ER-6f official video. It boasts a sporty new windscreen that is adjustable. Three positions offer a total range of 60 mm. The wind-tunnel designed aerodynamics package contributes to increased comfort. The new bodywork and windscreen offer better wind protection and were designed to minimize head buffeting. Deep grooves at the top of the side fairings are evocative of Kawasaki’s new flagship, the ZZR1400. Large openings in the side fairings help with heat dissipation and contribute to the ER-6f’s sporty looks. Built-in turn signals are more compact, contributing to the sporty image. Slimmer lower cowl contributes to the sharp styling.

The ER-6f Parrallel Twin engine configuration was chosen as the best balance of good power characteristics and compact size. Engine tuning delivered both a rider-friendly character ideal for new riders and performance to put a smile on the faces of more experienced riders.

Kawasaki ER-6n 2012 Official Video

Hey guys, Jon here again. Here is Kawasaki’s 2012 ER-6n official video. Like on its predecessor, the all-new double-pipe perimeter-style frame is a key component of the ER-6n's identity. As before, the new bodywork accentuates the frame, rather than hiding it. Double-pipe design of the new frame, made from high-tensile steel, contributes to the bike's lightweight appearance. Check it out.

Following the lines of the frame and rear shock, the swingarm also features the new double-pipe design, complementing the design of the frame and contributing to the ER-6n's high-quality appearance. The swingarm's gull-arm style design on the right side enables the more aggressive angle of the muffler.

To enable the more compact front area, the instrument cluster was moved as far back as possible. It is mounted above the handlebar. Stacked instrument cluster features an easier-to-read layout. Analogue-style tachometer uses white LED backlights for excellent visibility at night. The multi-function LCD screen has blue backlighting.

In addition to the fuel gauge, digital speedometer, clock, odometer and dual trip meters, new features include: remaining range, average/instant fuel consumption and the Economical Riding Indicator.

Raised tick marks on the tachometer dial face, a bubble lens and elevated instrument frame construction contribute to the instrumentation's greater legibility as well as a high-quality image.

Risky Business

What’s up people? As a street rider, sometimes it is easy to forget about the unpredictable nature of the vehicles around us. As a driver, sometimes it’s easy to look past the small headlight coming towards you in the other lane.

The folks over at Icon decided to take it upon themselves to make a video to help remind riders and drivers that we all share the same roads. Check it out.

So what happens to the Porsche 928, the Harley stunt bikes, and the pair of short shorts? They burst into flames. The fire took the fire department 45 minutes to extinguish using two firehoses.

Never before in the history of the Porsche Boxster was a change of generation so comprehensive. The open-top two-seater car is being marketed with a completely new lightweight body and a completely revamped chassis. Considerably lower weight, longer wheelbase, a wider track and larger wheels significantly enhance yet further the mid-engine sports car’s driving dynamics, already far and away the best in its class, supported by the new electro-mechanical power steering. The new Boxsters boast superior performance and are also up to 15 per cent more fuel-efficient. Depending on model, they get by with significantly less than eight liters of fuel per 100 kilometers.

The new Boxster thus delivers what the fundamentally changed styling with shorter overhangs, significantly forward-shifted windscreen, flatter silhouette and expressive edges promises. The passengers are enclosed by the completely redesigned, fully electric hood, which now dispenses with a convertible top compartment lid. The interior concept offers the occupants more space and reflects the new Porsche outline with the raked centre console, which, originating with the Carrera GT, ensures further improved ergonomics in all models.

The new sports car generation makes its debut in the classic Porsche pairing of Boxster and Boxster S. Both models are powered by flat-six engines with direct petrol injection, the efficiency of which is further enhanced by electrical system recuperation, thermal management and start/stop function. The base model’s new power unit delivers 265 hp (195 kW) from a 2.7 liter displacement – ten hp more than its larger displacement predecessor. Technically, it is now based on the 3.4-litre engine of the Boxster S. This now delivers 315 hp (232 kW), which is five hp more than before. Both models feature a manual six-speed gearbox as standard with the seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) available as an option. Both sports cars achieve their best fuel consumption and acceleration performance with the PDK. The Porsche Boxster’s fuel consumption with PDK is 7.7 l/100 km and 8.0 l/100 km for the Boxster S. With gear changes without interruption to the power flow, the Boxster sprints from zero to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds, the Boxster S in 5.0 seconds.

To enhance driving dynamics yet further, Porsche offers the Sport Chrono Package as an optional extra for the Boxster, featuring dynamic transmission mounts for the first time. Also new in the Boxster is Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) with mechanical rear axle differential lock.

The market launch of the new Boxster generation will be on 14.04.2012. The basic list price in Germany will be 48,291 euro for the Boxster and 59,120 euro for the Boxster S, including 19 per cent value added tax in both cases.

Finally we can talk about this! Yes, we’ve known about this for sometime but our good friend’s at APR Motorsport would kill us if we leaked it. Good friends, huh! All joking aside, this is great news and opportunity for APR’s world domination.

We cover a lot of the Volkswagen Racing Cup here. It’s such a great racing series with a wide variety of VW models banging doors. From Champion Steve Chaplin and his “Herbie” New Beetle RSI to the sweet looking Caddy that holds it own.

The Volkswagen Racing Cup is to enter the 2012 season with a new title sponsor – US Volkswagen Group tuning specialist APR, which is backing Britain’s most competitive and best-supported one-make saloon series as part of a new push into Europe.

Alabama-based APR, one of the biggest names in the world of Porsche, Audi, SEAT, Skoda and Volkswagen aftermarket performance products, has set up its European headquarters in Milton Keynes alongside those of Volkswagen Racing UK, and is set to become not just the championship’s title sponsor but also a technical partner.

APR will assist with scrutineering and offer technical assistance to competitors in the APR Volkswagen Racing Cup. “APR was established in 1997 and has many years of motorsport experience in the USA,” said vice-president Keith Lucas, “and it is a logical progression for us to bring the expertise we have gained to the European motorsport market and to offer it to competitors here.

“Britain is the ideal place for us to start our European program and the Volkswagen Racing Cup is a natural partner for us. It is a great championship and the competitors are enthusiastic and driven, just like APR.”

Sam Roach of Volkswagen Racing UK welcomed APR to the series: “It’s a great fit – APR has built a peerless reputation in the world of motorsport and aftermarket Volkswagen performance parts and the company’s knowledge and experience will prove a major benefit to the championship.”

In the United States, APR Motorsport has enjoyed major success over several seasons in GRAND-AM sports car racing – the team is set to contest the Rolex 24 at Daytona later this month with the first Audi R8 LMS in North America – and also races two Mk VI Golf GTIs and three Mk VI Jetta GLIs in the ST class of the GRAND-AM challenge.

The Volkswagen Racing Cup was established in the UK in 2000 and is entering its 13th season as the sole saloon- racing supporting event to British GT and British F3. This year the championship will also race at Brands Hatch alongside the German touring car championship and at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium as a supporting event to the 25-hour Fun Cup.

Adding to a growing list of awards, the new-for-2012 Volkswagen Passat has earned additional praise from Cars.com for its outstanding value and long list of standard features. Named “Best of 2012,” the Passat captured the third annual award from the popular online automotive source. Falken Tire looks back on 2011 ALMS season

The 2011 American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patron was a breakout year for Team Falken Tire. After partnering with esteemed Walker Racing, the GT squad captured its first two ALMS class victories with Wolf Henzler and Bryan Sellers in the No. 17 Porsche 911 GT3 RSR. Both wins came in spectacular fashion; the first in the midst of a downpour at Mid-Ohio, which was voted by fans as the 2011 ALMS Moment of the Year, and the second in front of a capacity crowd on the streets of Baltimore. Walker Racing owner Derrick Walker breaks down the highlights of 2011 and how the team made big gains this year.

Editor’s note: Wolf Henzler’s thread-the-needle pass at Road America was voted second in the 2011 ALMS Moment of the Year Pole.

ALMS: What were the most significant changes the team made in 2011?

Walker: First, we improved our Falken race tires in two key areas: the rain tire and the slower street track tire. Second, we improved the car preparation and set-ups. Third, we focused on maximizing what we could control, like pit stops, refueling strategy etc. Finally, we had a practical plan and did not try to re-invent the wheel.

ALMS: How is working with a tire manufacturer different than working with an engine or chassis manufacturer?

Walker: Not much. They are all working hard at improving their products and need a team component that allows them a consistent platform to bring in the results which in turn allows them to market their products. Falken-I liken them to the little tire company that can, meaning they are, compared to the giants, a small company with great products and big plans.

ALMS: Describe what was going on in the pit stand as Wolf Henzler charged through the rain at Mid-Ohio to take the team’s first win?

Walker: We knew watching all these cars without Falken products disappear off the track in spectacular fashion, that the red flag was not far away, so it was fun to watch Wolf carve his way through the pack. I still believe to this day that if it had not gone red for a couple of more laps, Wolf would have been the outright winner. It was, as we say in the business, a “nicker gripper” last few laps !

ALMS: Do you think the win at Baltimore had more significance than the win at Mid-Ohio because weather didn’t play a factor?

Walker: Yes. Well, it might have been the result that drove home the message that Falken is more than just a great wet tire, but as I like to say the wet and the Baltimore tire were a class above the field and in both events the team did great stops and last but certainly not least, our drivers made it happen in the cockpit. Total team effort!

ALMS: What does the team still need to improve to be a championship contender in 2012?

Walker: Well, of course if I told you that I would have to kill you! But seriously, a great deal like; learn how to maximize a new car’s performance in the shortest possible time, strengthen engineering by adding more people to speed up our learning curve, not only improve our wet and street tire to stay ahead of the competition but get more competitive on the high speed/load tracks like Atlanta or Mosport etc, and simply be the best as we can.

Hey what’s going on guys? Our first IPM Girl of the Month for 2012 is Sheryl Marie. She is one of the lead models for the Bay Area based Tempt Allure Agency. She specializes in their body painted model events.

The San Francisco based Sheryl was a Communications major and is fluent in several languages including Tagalog, Waray-Waray/ Samar-Leyte Visayan, and Spanish.

All the transport containers have been placed in the paddock of the Dubai Autodrome, all the drivers and team members are flying in from all over the world: this week, the 2012 motor racing season officially gets underway with the seventh running of the Dunlop 24H DUBAI, jointly organized by Dutch agency CREVENTIC and DNRT. Track action at the Dubai Autodrome starts on Wednesday with rent-a-car-rides and an optional test session. Free practice, qualifying and night practice are scheduled for Thursday while the race starts on Friday at 14.00 h local time (11.00 h CET) and finishes 24 hours later.

No less than 20 car brands will be present on the grid for this year’s Dunlop 24H DUBAI, the first international endurance race of the year for GTs, touring cars and 24H specials. With 18 cars, Porsche has the largest contingent, closely followed by BMW with 16 entries. These two brands are also jointly on top of the winners’ list of the Dunlop 24H DUBAI with three overall race wins each. Last year, German BMW team Schubert Motorsport claimed victory and they are back to defend their title under the „Saudi Falcons by Schubert’ banner with a strong line-up that includes lady racer Claudia Hurtgen and Swede Edward Sandstrom, who were both in last year’s winning team, as well as BMW works driver Jorg Muller and Saudi-Arabian drivers Abdulaziz Al Faisal and Faisal Binladen. Porsche is represented by a wealth of strong teams and various well-known drivers.

One year after the 24h race debut of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, there will be four sportscars with gullwing doors in Dubai, with five times’ DTM champion Bernd Schneider racing for Heico Motorsport and two times Porsche Supercup winner Jeroen Bleekemolen driving for Black Falcon. Last year, Lamborghini teams showed a very strong performance in qualifying, locking out the front row of the grid for the 2011 Dunlop 24H Dubai. For this year’s race, no less than five Lamborghini’s have been entered. Nissan also has a strong presence, including the reigning FIA GT1 world champion, Michael Krumm, and one car with the first-ever all-gamer crew in a major race, all the drivers having emerged from the Nissan/PlayStation GT Academy program. Other sports car brands on the grid in Dubai include Aston Martin, Audi, Corvette, Ferrari, Ginetta, Lotus and Saker.

Based on the performance shown in previous years, good results can also be expected from the cars in the SP2 category like the Renault Megane and GC silhouettes and the brawny DNRT V8 stock car, the NASCAR-style machine that will be racing in Dubai for the first time. The A5 class traditionally is the BMW domain while hot hatchbacks like Renault Clio, MINI and BMW 120 make up most of the A2 touring car category.

On Wednesday, January 11th, there is an optional private test from 13.30 till 17.30 h, followed by the welcome party in the paddock. On Thursday, January 12th, there are free practice sessions from 11.30 till 12.15 and 13.15 till 14.45 h. Qualifying is scheduled from 15.00 till 17.30 h with the first hour for all classes and then two separate heats of 30 minutes each for the smaller and the bigger categories. On Friday, January 13th, the action starts with warm-up from 10.30 till 11.00 h. The 24-hour race starts at 14.00 h. This year’s Dunlop 24H DUBAI will be covered by Motors TV and Radio Le Mans while live timing, live streaming and news can also be found at live.24hseries.com

Under the motto "Fighting cancer lap by lap", money will again be raised during the Dunlop 24H DUBAI for the benefit of the KWF Dutch Cancer Society. Teams and drivers can enroll in a donation program to support the good cause. Last year, a total donation of 15,000 Euros could be made to the Dutch Cancer Society after the Dunlop 24H DUBAI. Of course, the aim for this year is to exceed that amount.

The first two generations of the allroad quattro from the years 2000 and 2006 were winners, and Audi hopes to build on this success with the third generation. Universally talented, the new A6 allroad quattro extends the range of uses for the A6 Avant because when the asphalt ends, it just keeps on driving. Performance has improved and fuel consumption has been reduced by as much as 20 percent compared with the previous model.

Body and exterior design

The new A6 allroad quattro is 4.94 meters (16.21 ft) long, 1.90 meters (6.23 ft) wide and 1.47 (4.82 ft) meters tall, making it a few millimeters bigger than the Avant. It follows the Audi ultra lightweight construction principle familiar from the sedan, with aluminum components making up roughly 20 percent of its body. Total vehicle weight has been reduced by as much as 70 kilograms (154 lb) compared with the previous model.

The Audi A6 allroad quattro has a sportily distinctive road stance. It features balanced proportions, sharp lines delineate taut surfaces and the roof line flows into flat D-pillars. Audi offers progressive LED technology as an option for the headlights and tail lights. The xenon plus headlights can be combined with adaptive light, which ensures that the road is always properly illuminated afor the situation at hand.

The body of the new A6 allroad quattro sits six centimeters (2.36 in) higher than that of the A6 Avant. Setting it apart are, in particular, the trim strips on the side sills, the more widely flared fenders and the single-frame grille with vertical slats. Stainless steel covers protect the underbody at the front and rear of the car, and the exhaust system ends in two large, flattened tailpipes. The roof rails are mounted on double bars.

The wheel well edges, the bumpers and the sills are painted in a contrasting color. Audi also offers a full paint finish in combination with the optional aluminum exterior package. The color Java Braun is available exclusively for the new A6 allroad quattro.

Interior and luggage compartment

The interior of the Audi A6 allroad quattro offers plenty of space thanks to the long wheelbase of 2.91 meters (9.55 ft). It features a lean, elegant design, exemplarily clear ergonomics and superior workmanship. A function that depicts the car's pitch has been added to the MMI operating system, the soft keys of which are gleaming aluminum. MMI comes as standard, as does the onboard computer with efficiency program. A comprehensive package of restraint systems helps to mitigate the consequences of an accident.

Visual cues differentiating the A6 allroad quattro include the carpeting and the instrument panel, which are black throughout. Other refined details include the interior color Santos Brown and the optional aluminum inlays. The door sill trims are also made of aluminum and are emblazoned with "allroad."

The luggage compartment of the new A6 allroad quattro has a capacity of 565 liters (19.95 cu ft). Latches in the luggage compartment make it easy to fold down the rear seats, increasing luggage capacity to 1,680 liters (59.33 cu ft). Standard equipment features underscore the practical character of the new model – a rail system with an included load-securing kit for dividing the luggage compartment as needed, tensioning straps on the left wall and a double loading floor.

Equipment and Audi connect

Audi offers a broad choice of options for the new A6 allroad quattro. The head-up display projects important information onto the windshield. Ambient lighting bathes the interior with subtle LED light, and the widely adjustable deluxe front seats are optionally available with a ventilation and massage function. Additional highlights include four-zone automatic air conditioning, a panoramic glass roof and the convenience key, which can stay in the driver's jacket pocket.

Topping the modular range of infotainment options is the hard drive-based navigation system MMI Navigation plus with touchpad operation (MMI touch) and whole-word voice control. Its power-retractable eight-inch monitor displays extremely sharp, high-contrast images. The Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System boasts 15 speakers.

The new A6 allroad quattro is also state of the art when it comes to connection technology. The optional Bluetooth car phone online connects it to the Internet via UMTS, and a WLAN hotspot lets the passengers surf and e-mail. Tailored services for the driver, such as the all-new Audi traffic information online or Audi music stream web radio, are delivered right to the car. Attractive services from Google, including Google Earth, Google Street View and voice-activated POI search, are also available.

Driver assistance systems

The Audi assistance and safety systems lend even more confidence to driving. The radar-based adaptive cruise control with stop & go function always keeps the new A6 allroad quattro at the proper distance from the car ahead. At speeds below 30 km/h (18.64 mph), the system initiates maximum braking in the event of an impending collision. ACC stop & go works closely together with the Audi pre sense safety system, which is available in a number of configurations.

Audi active lane assist helps the driver to maintain the lane; Audi side assist helps when changing lanes. The night vision assistant with marking of detected persons reduces the stress of driving in the dark. The driver information system with rest recommendation function detects when the driver is getting tired and recommends taking a rest.

A variety of high-end systems help take the stress out of parking. The park assist system with 360° display takes over the steering; the parking system plus with 360° camera provides good vision in all directions. Four small wide-angle cameras record images of the vehicle's immediate surroundings, which can then be displayed from a variety of perspectives on the MMI monitor.

Drivetrain

The new A6 allroad quattro is available with a choice of four powerful and highly cultivated V6 engines – one TFSI gasoline engine and three TDI units. All are three-liter engines with turbocharging and direct injection. They make use of important technologies from the Audi modular efficiency platform – the start-stop system and innovative thermal management. Their fuel consumption has been reduced by as much as 20 percent compared with the previous model.

The 3.0 TFSI, which is boosted by a mechanically driven compressor, produces 228 kW (310 hp) and 440 Nm (324.53 lb-ft) of torque. It accelerates the A6 allroad quattro from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 5.9 seconds on the way to a electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (155.34 mph). It consumes 8.9 liters of fuel per 100 km (26.43 US mpg).

The three variants of the 3.0 TDI produce 150 kW (204 hp), 180 kW (245 hp) and 230 kW (313 hp); torque values are 450, 580 and 650 Nm (331.90, 427.79 and 479.42 lb-ft). The entry-level version consumes on average just 6.1 liters of fuel per 100 km (38.56 US mpg), corresponding to 159 g CO2/km (255.89 g/mile). Audi will soon offer a particularly low-emissions clean diesel version of the 180 kW (245 hp) engine. The twin-turbo 3.0 TDI developing 230 kW (313 hp) is a powerful, great sounding engine. It accelerates the A6 allroad quattro from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 5.6 seconds; the top speed is an electronically regulated 250 km/h (155.34 mph).

The most powerful TDI delivers its power to a smooth and fast-shifting eight-speed tiptronic transmission. The three other engines are paired with the seven-speed S tronic, a sporty dual-clutch transmission. With their wide ratio spreads, the automatic transmissions are major contributors to the efficiency of the A6 allroad quattro. The driver can operate them manually, including via optional paddles on the steering wheel.

The quattro permanent four-wheel drive system is paired with torque vectoring. During dynamic driving this system brakes the wheels on the inside of the curve, which are under a reduced load, before they can slip. This further enhances traction and handling. The optional sport differential distributes the power in continuously variable proportions between the rear wheels.

Chassis

The chassis of the A6 allroad quattro combines sportiness with comfort. The new electromechanical power steering is sensitive and highly efficient. The optional dynamic steering adjusts the steering ratio to the speed driven.

With the Audi drive select system, the driver can vary the function of the steering, the air suspension, the gas pedal, the automatic transmission, the sport differential, the automatic air conditioning, the lighting and the adaptive cruise control. In Efficiency mode, these systems work as economically as possible; their function can be very freely configured in Individual mode.

The adaptive air suspension, which combines air suspension with controlled damping, comes as standard. It lowers the body by 15 millimeters (0.59 in) at high speed and raises it by 35 millimeters (1.38 in) at the push of a button. This allroad mode is suitable for rough terrain. Furthermore, the driver can select a lift mode at low speeds. An additional ten millimeters (0.39 in) enables the new Audi A6 allroad quattro to also handle major irregularities in the road surface.

The Audi A6 allroad quattro rolls on 18-inch, five-arm alloy wheels and 235/55-size tires. Audi and quattro GmbH offer optional wheels measuring 18, 19 and 20 inches in diameter. The large brakes provide powerful deceleration. The driver can activate a hill descent assist function for steep downhill passages. This limits the speed to between 10 and 20 km/h (6.21 and 12.43 mph), depending on the surface.

The new Audi A6 allroad quattro will be available in Germany from spring 2012. The 3.0 TDI developing 150 kW (204 hp) has a list price of €54,600.

Flying Lizard leaves Daytona today after a successful test of the No. 45 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. Over the three-day Roar Before the 24 test, drivers Joerg Bergmeister (Germany), Patrick Long (USA), Mike Rockenfeller (Germany), and Seth Neiman (USA) took the Porsche through its paces in preparation for the 2012 Rolex 24 At Daytona race, January 28-29.

“The driver objective for Daytona test days is two-fold: get a balance with the Porsche and get comfortable with the car. By the time we get to race week, we need to have completely sorted through ergonomics issues and be 100 percent with the car. This week, everything came together seamlessly: with Flying Lizard and John Wright’s team we worked through all of our objectives.”

Long added, “It’s a huge GT field this year. I’m confident that the Porsche will be competitive, but of course we won’t really know how things stack up until the race. Over the last few days, we stayed focused on our own program; I think we’re well on our way to having a solid car that drives well through the entire stint.”

Mike Rockenfeller

“It’s great to be back at Daytona. It’s been a while since I’ve driven a Cup car so it was important to have the time to get used to it again. We had time this week to try a lot of things on the car. We’ve still got some work to do to get to race setup, but overall I’m happy with what we accomplished. GT competition is really strong: both internally with all of the other Porsches and the other manufacturers. It’s going to be a wild race. We need to have an easy car to drive and find our rhythm early on. I’m happy to be back here and with the Lizards again.”

“We are still learning the car and the tires but we made a lot of progress over the test. The competition in GT is going to be tough: there are over 20 Porsches alone and a lot of other manufacturers with good cars and lineups. All signs point to GT being even more challenging than the DP class was in 2011.”

2012 will be Flying Lizard’s fourth year at the Rolex 24 At Daytona. In 2011, the GT team fielded their first prototype: the No. 45 Porsche-powered Riley DP. After a promising start from the pole (Bergmeister) and having set the fastest race lap, the No. 45 was retired at hour 23 after a challenging race. In 2010, the No. 67 Flying Lizard/TRG Porsche GT3 Cup finished second in GT. In 2005 the No. 75 Porsche finished thirteenth, and in 2004, the No. 74 Flying Lizard Porsche GT3 Cup was second in GT and third overall.

Bergmeister has won three times here: in GT in 2009 (with Patrick Long), in GT and overall in 2003, and in GT in 2002. Rockenfeller won overall in 2010.

The 2013 Audi RS 5 makes its U.S. debut this week at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. A classically elegant coupe with unbridled power, the Audi RS 5 features a high-revving 4.2-liter V8 with 450 horsepower and a seven-speed S tronic transmission with launch control program. An innovative crown-gear center differential in the quattro drivetrain transmits power to all four wheels, providing exceptional traction and grip for increased performance.

The 4.2 FSI delivers 450 horsepower at 8,250 rpm and between 4,000 and 6,000 rpm, and transmits a maximum of 317 lb-ft of torque. The engine propels the RS 5 on to an electronically-governed top speed of 174 mph.

The ultra-powerful RS 5 features an optimized engine and drivetrain, on-demand oil pump, and energy-recovery system that conserves energy during coasting and braking. The standard seven-speed S tronic in the RS 5, with its high efficiency ratio and its high-geared top speed, also enhances efficiency.

The RS 5 can operate in fully automatic mode, or the driver can shift via the gear selector or shift paddles on the steering wheel. Audi drive select system adjusts the vehicle’s transmission shift characteristics, throttle response, dynamic steering and sports differential. The driver can select from auto, comfort, dynamic and individual Audi drive select settings.

In the new RS 5, Audi unveils the next generation of quattro: a crown-gear differential.

The self-locking crown-gear center differential is compact and lightweight, and attains a high efficiency ratio. Thanks to its package of plates, the differential can widely vary the distribution of torque between the front and rear axles. If necessary, up to 70 percent can flow to the front or as much as 85 percent toward the tail end. The 40:60 ratio of the standard rear-biased configuration ensures sporty handling.

This new differential operates in conjunction with electronic torque vectoring. As a perfect complement to the new quattro drivetrain, the sport differential at the rear axle is standard.

The RS 5 chassis exhibits a sporty configuration and renders the body 0.8 inches lower than that of the Audi A5. The 19-inch alloy wheels fitted with 265/35 tires are standard with an exclusive 10-spoke forged design. The RS 5 optionally comes with 20-inch wheels and 275/30 tires.

The brake system employs powerful and internally ventilated discs, which measure 14.4 inches in diameter at the front axle. The high-gloss black brake calipers bearing RS logos are made of aluminum; the front calipers are fitted with eight pistons each. Audi can optionally fit the front axle with ceramic carbon-fiber brake discs measuring 15 inches in diameter. The electronic stability control (ESC) integrates a sport mode and can be switched off entirely.

The RS 5 exudes an athletic and powerful identity; its classically beautiful coupe styling dazzles with new and clear-cut accents. Adaptive xenon plus headlights boasting a sweeping strip of LED daytime running lights are standard. The oversized air inlets for the engine, front brakes and the radiators are bordered by striking contours. The newly designed bumper tapers downward into a splitter and is available in Aluminum-optic paint.

The flared fenders with the crisp horizontal upper edges are reminiscent of a classic Audi, namely the all-wheel-drive pioneer Audi quattro. The side sills bear angular caps; the trim strips on the single-frame grille and near the side windows as well as the outside mirrors’ covers feature a matte aluminum look. Eight different paint finishes are available.

The tail end is dominated by two oval exhaust pipes integrated within the bumper. A large diffuser protrudes prominently upward. The spoiler in the tailgate automatically extends at a speed of 75 mph and retracts at 50 mph.

The extensively clad underbody of the RS 5 integrates air vents for the seven-speed S tronic and front brakes. At highway speeds, the aerodynamic characteristics of the RS 5 generate downforce to further enhance stability.

The vehicle’s dynamically elegant styling extends to the interior, with power-adjustable sport seats with pronounced side sections and integrated head restraints, finished in Fine Nappa Leather or optional leather / Alcantara®. The flat-bottom steering wheel has a substantial rim and is covered with perforated leather. The instruments have black gauges and white lettering with distinctive scaling. The driver information system integrates a lap timer for recording circuit times and an oil-temperature gauge. Just like the optional MMI navigation systems’ monitor, it displays an RS greeting upon ignition.

The interior is black and the decorative inlays are made of carbon fiber. The pedals, the footrests, and the optional MMI navigation systems’ control buttons gleam thanks to their aluminum look. Moreover, the door handles consist of two slim strips – typical of Audi RS models. Aluminum inserts adorn the door sill trims and RS 5 logos lend dynamic highlights to the interior.

Sales of the Audi RS 5 will begin in the spring.

Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, unveiled the 911 Carrera Cabriolet in Detroit today. The 911 is making its debut with a completely new roof concept that combines the elegant styling of the Coupe with the advantages of a light fabric hood. So it is that the Cabriolet continues all the innovations of the new 911 Carrera family, complemented by new features for open sports cars: intelligent lightweight design ensures less weight and more sportiness, lower fuel consumption and greater comfort. As with the Coupes, the new Cabriolets start with the 911 Carrera, powered by a 350 hp (257 kW), 3.4-liter six-cylinder engine and the 911 Carrera S with 400 hp (294 kW) flat engine and 3.8 liter displacement.

Matthias Muller, President and Chief Executive Officer of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, unveiled the new Cabriolet in Detroit. “Our engineers have built the best 911 in 48 years. That applies every bit as much to the Coupe as it does to the Cabriolet.” In his speech, he also observed: “In 2011, with 118.867 deliveries, Porsche set a new record in the company’s history. In 2012 we are planning to continue growing as well and will raise this record performance to new heights.”

Together with the 911 Carrera Coupe, the Cabriolet is putting a sporty emphasis on the first motor show 2012. Other exhibits as well are in the same vein: The puristic Panamera GTS is a variant of the Gran Turismo family with optimized driving dynamics; the Cayman R lends motor racing flair to the two-seater sports Coupe class.
