F3ES: Two podium places for Marco Wittmann at season opener Posted: 04 Apr 2011 01:13 PM PDT Places five, two and three made Marco Wittmann (Germany) the quickest Volkswagen driver at the Formula 3 Euro Series season opener held at Le Castellet. The 2010 “vice champion” will travel to Hockenheim (29 April–1 May), the second out of a total of nine race weekends, ranking in fourth place of the standings. The other drivers “powered by Volkswagen” scored fewer points. Wittmann’s Signature team colleague Laurens Vanthoor (Belgium) set his top mark of the weekend in fifth place at the third race. The rookies in the French team, Carlos Muñoz (Columbia) and Daniel Abt (Germany, achieved fifth and ninth place. Unlike their rivals, the Volkswagen drivers had difficulties making optimal use of the performance of the new tires prescribed for the series over the whole racing distance. For Team Motopark Academy the first race weekend also marked the beginning of a year of learning. For the four drivers Jimmy Eriksson (Sweden), Kimiya Sato (Japan), Gianmarco Raimondo (Canada) and Kuba Giermaziak (Poland) the Formula 3 Euro Series is still new territory. Jimmy Eriksson and Kimiya Sato as the best Motopark Academy drivers managed to make their debut with a sixth-place finish. However, deep in the field were two Volkswagen Scirocco GT24′s ready to punish the competition in SP3T. 16 cars would make up this class with only 5 finishing the 4 hour race. Main competition came from Raeder Motorsports Audi TT RS as it ran consistent times with the GT24′s. The fastest lap came from the no301 Scirocco with an 8:51.063. Volkswagen Bulli electric concept car celebrates German premiere Posted: 04 Apr 2011 07:58 AM PDT At Hannover Messe, starting today, Volkswagen gives visitors a comprehensive view of its sustainability strategy. Under the heading of “Think Blue.”, the brand is showcasing a wide range of environmentally compatible technologies and vehicles. In addition, Volkswagen is presenting its “Think Blue. Factory.” concept to make production even more efficient and conserve resources even more effectively. At Hannover Messe 2011, Volkswagen is focusing on the link between ecologically sustainable mobility and resource-efficient production processes. Under the well-known label of “BlueMotionTechnologies”, the brand pools especially efficient, low-emission technologies and powertrains. The “Think Blue.” principle presented in 2010 transfers this approach to other areas of the company and everyday situations and provides employees and customers with motivation to act in an environmentally responsible way. According to Hubert Waltl, Member of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen Passenger Cars Brand with responsibility for Production and Logistics, on the application of “Think Blue.” to production: “Responsible mobility goes hand in hand with environmentally compatible production. This is why Volkswagen is forging ahead with its “Think blue. Factory.” concept. Our aim is to significantly enhance energy efficiency in production at the same time as markedly reducing emissions and the use of resources.” In order to achieve this aim, additional efficiency measures are to be implemented in all production units. These include new press technology with energy savings of up to 40 percent, improved insulation for plant buildings, programs to shut advanced robot systems down during breaks and the use of high-efficiency motors. In addition, Volkswagen is placing greater emphasis on diversified energy supplies and is Europe’s only automaker to take part in renewable energy production. The latest examples of action being taken around the world include participation in the construction of offshore wind farms off the North Sea coast and a new Volkswagen hydropower plant in Brazil that will cover about 18 percent of the energy demand for Volkswagen plants in the country. At the Volkswagen stand, trade fair visitors can take an interactive virtual tour of a car production plant and explore the principle of ecologically sustainable production. The mode of operation of a flexible production line for vehicles with different drive systems ranging from internal combustion engines to electric motors is also being demonstrated. Apart from a selection of especially eco-friendly vehicles, visitors can expect a glimpse of mobility in the future. The main focus is on the new Bulli, an electric-powered compact can study celebrating its German premiere in Hanover. This van is a zero-emission vehicle. The silent electric motor receives its power from a 40 kWh lithium ion battery, allowing a range of up to 300 kilometers. At a recharging point especially designed for electric vehicles, the battery can be fully recharged in less than an hour. Furthermore, Hannover Messe offers those who are interested in a career with Europe’s largest automaker an opportunity to obtain comprehensive information. The Volkswagen HR marketing team will be available for personal discussions on the stand in Hall 15. Hannover Messe is one of the world’s major technology showcases. About 6,500 exhibitors from 65 countries are presenting their products and expertise in an exhibition area of 230,000 square meters this year. LMS: Start crash causes early retirement for Porsche 911 GT3 RSR’s Posted: 04 Apr 2011 06:05 AM PDT At the season-opener of the Le Mans Series, four of the five Porsche 911 GT3 RSR were caught up in a start crash that was not their fault. For all three professional Porsche teams contesting the GTE-Pro class, this marked an early end in Le Castellet after their vehicles suffered too much damage. After the formation lap, the safety car stayed out on the track with lights off while the start lights for the race were turned to green. This led to an unfortunate chain reaction: The back-markers in the field were still accelerating while those at the front were braking hard. The starter field was pushed together over the entire width of the track, leading to a collision. Luckily, the Porsche drivers remained largely uninjured. After six hours of racing, the sole, unaffected Porsche 911 GT3 RSR brought home victory in the newly-created GTE-Am sports car class. In this class, only one professional driver is permitted per vehicle. The second 911 in the GTE-Am class received the flag in sixth, after the vehicle underwent extensive repairs due to the start crash. “Well, that was the shortest race of my life,” said Porsche works driver Richard Lietz (Austria) laconically. “After the formation lap, the lights were already green, but because of the packed field it wasn’t possible to register that the safety car hadn’t yet left the track. Suddenly I was torpedoed from the left and pushed into the wall. I had no chance to avoid the accident.” Lietz’s teammate Marc Lieb (Germany) summed up: “This is a nightmare for us. All three GTE-Pro 911 have been shunted out of the race through no fault of our own. Richard and I had a great race set-up. Maybe we could have managed a podium result. For the next race in Spa, this means we have to go hard out.” Last year, the Felbermayr-Proton duo, Lieb and Lietz, claimed victory at Le Castellet which laid the foundation for their title win in the sports car class. The start driver for ProSpeed Competition, Porsche works driver Marco Holzer (Germany), was relieved he could get out of his demolished 911 GT3 RSR without serious injury. “After the start lights turned green everyone accelerated,” said Holzer. “Then suddenly they slammed on the brakes at the front. I was hit hard from the rear and slid sideways over the circuit, nudging another vehicle in the process.” Holzer contests his second season for the Belgian squad in the LMS. His teammate in the 2011-version 911 is race professional Marc Goossens (Belgium). Factory pilots Wolf Henzler (Germany) and Patrick Pilet (France) were also caught up in the crash. The mechanics from IMSA Performance Matmut even attempted to repair the badly damaged 911 GT3 RSR, but the damage was too severe to repair at the track in time. With this, the pleasure of winning the GTE-Am class with Felbermayr-Proton’s 2010-spec 911 was somewhat dampened. The performance of the team was particularly astounding considering that the blue Porsche 911 GT3 RSR was manned by three ambitious gentlemen drivers. Team owner Christian Ried (Germany) shares the cockpit with two Austrians Horst Felbermayr Junior and Horst Felbermayr Senior. The French duo Nicolas Armindo and Raymond Narac achieved sixth in the GTE-Am class after their 911 GT3 RSR underwent 75 minutes of repairs. The disappointment was particularly bitter because Armindo, as LMS new-comer, had built up the hopes of his IMSA Performance Matmut squad for a class win after posting the best time in qualifying. Statistics: 1st race LMS in Le Castellet, F * The result is preliminary, as a protest against the start procedure and hence the race classification has been made. Round two of the Le Mans Series takes place on Saturday, 7 May, in Belgium’s Spa-Francorchamps. Related posts: |
