If you are proud of your car and it has a nice set of wheels you will know how annoying it is when one of them gets scuffed. It can happen so easily – you get a little too close to the curb when parking and in an instant the damage is done.

Now you can avoid the expense

Getting your wheels repainted is an expensive business. It will cost about $400 to get 4 wheels repainted professionally. However, it will cost you more than $100 to get just one wheel done, since the repair shop will spend as much time setting up to do one wheels as they will for 4, among other reasons. Besides it's better to do all four wheels at the same time or else you will have one wheel that looks slightly different from the others (at the very least it's going to look newer).
With PlastiDip you can do a top notch job yourself, and save a lot of money. The kit for repainting 4 wheels only costs $50 for a gloss or pearl finish, and just $25 for a matte finish! I recommend that you also purchase the pre-dip cleaning product which costs only $8.49. This will ensure that the PlastiDip adheres properly. All of these products are available at dipyourcar.com.

It’s so simple

It's not a complicated task. You need to remove the wheel, sand down the scuffed areas until they are smooth, clean the wheel(s) thoroughly, (apply some etching primer on any exposed metal and wait the appropriate amount of drying time), and then apply the paint.
You need to apply the PlastiDip paint in a dry and well-ventilated area, and I recommend that you wear a safety mask. You don't have to remove the tire; in fact you don't even need to mask off the tire since you can just peel off the overspray! However, masking off the tire will result in less work overall, since you won't have so much cleaning up to do. You can even use index cars to mask off the rubber – just wedge them between the rubber and the rim, overlapping them.

This video shows a bit more detail (3 minutes long). This guy does not remove the wheel from the vehicle, but I recommend that you do, otherwise it's hard not to get PlastiDip on the braking components. I also think that it's more difficult to access all parts of the wheel when it's still attached to the car.
 

Important reminders

That's how easy it is folks! Just remember to smooth and clean the surface carefully before you apply the PlastiDip. Also, the first coat should be really light. When that coat has dried a little add at least two more coats. Work in a well-ventilated area and please please wear a proper mask.

Some people
may wonder about the best way to wash a vehicle that's been repainted using
PlastiDip. The finish is definitely unusual – it's a rubberized coating, so
it's no surprise that people want to know the best way to clean it. Some people
go for the glossy finish, but no doubt questions will still be raised regarding
how to clean that too.
Ideally you
should use DipWash 
which is a
special shampoo that cleans the PlastiDip paint with leaving a white residue
like ordinary car shampoo can. It's $9 and best used along with the special cleaning cloth which costs another $9. 
You can
also use special dry-foam to quickly and safely clean the paint. It only takes
10 minutes to clean a car, and no water is required. The kit is available at
dipyourcar.com and costs $80. 
The kit
includes a device that sprays the foam and one gallon of the cleaning product.
You can also use the kit to clean regular paintwork.
If you
prefer to use a car wash, you can go right ahead and do that without any
concern about the PlastiDip finish.

Like everyone else who has an interest in Formula One, Bernie Ecclestone has put in his two bob’s worth on the Sebastian Vettel yellowgate saga, saying “it’s a complete joke.” He expects nothing will come of the controversy and reckons Ferrari should have pulled their heads in.

The FIA is yet to publish an official statement on the Lap 4 incident, when Vettel allegedly overtook Jean-Eric Vergne under yellow flag conditions, but has revealed informally that it believes Vettel has no case to answer.

It’s understood that Ferrari was considering an official protest, but has simply written a letter to the FIA seeking clarification over the issue. Bernie has come in off the long run to sink the boot into Ferrari as well.

“In the rules and regs normally you have to protest. They [Ferrari] missed that time,” Ecclestone explained. “Then there is the fact that a green flag was shown, which nobody seems to dispute. It's a complete joke. What they are saying in that letter is wrong. I don't think there needs to be any action taken. It's completely and utterly wrong.

“Personally I think it's not really like Ferrari to do this. I think they badly wanted to win. But nothing will happen. What can they do? Take civil action? Maybe. But the case is flawed before it starts. Nothing is going to happen.”

You’re looking at one of the first spy shots of BMW’s new F23 2 Series convertible, which has just been captured on the streets of Munich. The F22 coupé will actually be the first to go into production, but as with the former E82/E88 1 Series coupé/convertible it was the ragtop that was spied first.

The best news is that BMW looks to be addressing the ghastly headlight styling of the current F20 1 Series hatch. Although, it is hard to tell with that heavy camouflage, it appears as though the new convertible will have a more rakish/sporty front end compared with its predecessor.

The 2 Series is scheduled for production in the latter half of next year, so expect to see spy shots in future with more bodywork gradually being revealed.

According to BimmerPost this is what we’ll see from the 2 Series platform:

FIA: Vettel has no case to answer

Sebastian Vettel is still number one, according to the FIA, who say the newly crowned world champion has no case to answer in the did he, or did he not, overtake under yellow flag conditions controversy.

The news is being reported by Autosport, which states: “[the FIA] was in no doubt that Vettel’s pass [on Jean-Eric Vergne] was legitimate.”

Over the last 24 hours or so the F1 world has been gripped by this saga; media attention heightened by reports saying Ferrari was investigating the possibility of lodging a formal protest.

According to Autosport the FIA has confirmed the following: “the yellow-flag sector at Interlagos started at the light panel just before Turn 3, at marshal sector 3, and ends about 150m before Turn 4, where a green light panel is displayed.

“However, there is a marshal’s post in between these two panels and a green flag was being waved there on that lap.”

The green flag takes precedence over the light panels, so by that interpretation Vettel’s overtake on Vergne is perfectly legal. Nothing to see here.

Well done Sebastian. Again.

Oh, there’s just one more thing. Despite this apparently clear and concise ruling, Ferrari is said to have written to the FIA seeking a formal clarification. You know, just for future reference and the like.

Ferrari considering F1 championship protest

Ferrari is considering an appeal against Sebastian Vettel’s actions in the Brazilian Grand Prix. If the protest is lodged and upheld, the ramifications could see Vettel stripped of the 2012 F1 world championship in favour Fernando Alonso.

The protest centres around an overtaking move Vettel made on Toro Rosso’s Jean-Eric Vergne in the early laps of the Brazilian GP. The pass was not shown on live TV as the main feed was showing replays of the start. However, footage from Vettel’s own on-board camera does appear to show he overtook Vergne in a yellow flag zone. You can see the footage after the break, forward to around 9:30 if you want to go straight to the incident in question.

According to the BBC, if Vettel was found guilty by the FIA, a 20 second penalty could be applied to Vettel’s overall race time. That would drop him back to eighth place, but more importantly, Vettel would lose four crucial championship points; enough  to make Fernando Alonso the world champion by a single point.

Interestingly, even if Ferrari doesn’t lodge an appeal, the FIA’s own rules appear to force its hand into investigating the incident now that new information has come to light.

Article 179b of the international sporting code reads: “If, in events forming part of an FIA championship, a new element is discovered, whether or not the stewards of the meeting have already given a ruling, these stewards of the meeting or, failing this, those designated by the FIA must meet… summoning the party or parties concerned to hear any relevant explanations and to judge in the light of the facts and elements brought before them.”

There is a time limit though; any investigation and subsequent decision would have to be handed down by 30 November. So, Vettel may only have a couple of sleepless night, it seems.

While nothing official has been announced by Ferrari, Fernando Alonso did post this via twitter last night (translated from Spanish): “I don’t believe in miracles. I make my miracles out of the correct rules.”

It would be a shame if the championship was to be decided off-track like this. But, this is Formula One, where the action off the circuit is often as heated and cut-throat as it is on-track.

Were Ferrari to protest and have Alonso named as world champion we think it would probably put to rest, once and for all, any rumours of Vettel driving for Ferrari in 2014 or beyond.

Today we bring you the highly anticipated new Porsche Cayman. It’s on show now at the LA Auto Show and we very much wish we were there to get a closer look at what we expect will be the one of the purest handling and most balanced Porsche models ever made. Who needs a 911?!

The new Cayman is lighter, up to 30kg, lower and more efficient than the outgoing 987 model. A wider track and longer wheelbase (+60mm) make for a better driving experience, Porsche says.

Of course, the new Cayman is a little bit faster than both the new Boxster on which it is based and the old Cayman. We’ve listed the key stats for the Cayman and Cayman S below.

Debut at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show

Lighter, lower, more agile: World premiere of the new Porsche Cayman

Stuttgart. Porsche AG is celebrating the world premiere of the new Cayman at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show. The third generation of the Cayman has been completely new developed. It is lower and longer, lighter and faster, more efficient and more powerful than ever. A longer wheelbase, wider track and larger wheels enhance the driving performance of the mid-engine sports car to a level without equal in its competitive class. The new two-seater is – after the 911 Carrera and Boxster – the third sports car model line from Porsche to feature innovative lightweight body design. The new Cayman is up to 30 kg lighter, depending on the specific model and equipment, and it consumes up to 15 per cent less fuel per 100 km than the previous model – despite higher engine and driving performance.

The new generation of the two-seat mid-engine sports car is debuting in two classic Porsche versions: the Cayman and the Cayman S. The base model is powered by a 2.7-liter flat six-cylinder engine with 275 hp (202 kW). It accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds, depending on the equipment, and reaches a top speed of 266 km/h. Its NEDC fuel consumption lies between 7.7 l/100 km and 8.2 l/100 km, depending on the selected transmission.

The 3.4-liter engine of the Cayman S produces 325 hp (239 kW); the best possible acceleration from a standstill to 100 km/h is 4.7 seconds with appropriate features. The Cayman S can reach a top speed of 283 km/h, and its NEDC fuel consumption value lies between 8.0 l/100 km and 8.8 l/100 km, depending on the selected transmission.

Both sport coupés are equipped with standard manual six-speed transmission. The seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) can be delivered as an option; it enables faster acceleration and better fuel economy.

Porsche is also upgrading the Cayman with new optional features. For example, the sport coupé is now available with Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) for the first time, which controls the distance to the car ahead in traffic and vehicle speed, as well as a specially developed Burmester sound system. Another new feature for the Cayman is the keyless Entry & Drive system, which is available as an option.

Design: new proportions, prominent lines

The new Cayman is more distinctive than ever. Its proportions are new, and yet it is clearly a Porsche sport coupé; an extended wheelbase with shorter overhangs and 18- and 19-inch diameter wheels with larger rolling circumference are identifying visual characteristics of the car's more enhanced driving performance. Its styling is marked by precise lines and razor-sharp sculpted edges. They emphasise the car's low, extended silhouette with the windscreen shifted forward and the roof line that reaches far back. Especially expressive and characteristic are the dynamic recesses in the doors, which guide induction air into the distinctive air scoops on the rear side panels and then directly to the engine. This offers the most prominent visualisation of the concept of a mid-engine car.

From the front end, the new Cayman is marked by its dominant cooling air inlets, which increase in size towards the sides of the car. Just as unique to the new generation of the sport coupé are the large, low rear lid made of aluminium and the rear section with its wrap-around edges. Mounted directly to the rear lid is the thin blade of the rear spoiler, which – in contrast to that of the Boxster – is higher and deploys at a steeper angle. The overall appearance of the Cayman is more independent than before, and it is well-differentiated from the previous model.

The market launch of the new Cayman generation in Europe is scheduled for March 2, 2013. Base prices in Germany are 51,385 euros for the Cayman and 64,118 euros for the Cayman S, each including 19 % VAT.

Kimi Raikkonen doesn't know what he's doing

It’s only a few weeks since Kimi Raikkonen demanded we leave him alone because he knows what he’s doing. Well, this rather amusing clip from the Brazilian Grand Prix tends to suggest otherwise.

After a minor off, Kimi tried to take a shortcut down an alternate entry onto the Interlagos race track. But, as you’ll see, he didn’t have a clue what he was doing until it was all too late.

For added lolz we’ve found the footage via Finnish TV and while you probably won’t understand a word they’re saying, laughter is universal!

Valtteri Bottas to race for Williams in 2013

Williams reserve driver Valtteri Bottas has been signed to race for the team in 2013. He’ll drive alongside Spanish Grand Prix winner Pastor Maldonado, who has kept his place, meaning Bruno Senna is currently out of a job.

Bottas has been on Williams’ payroll since 2010 and both driver and team look forward to a seamless transition from bit part player to full-time driver. The 23-year-old Finn won championships in junior categories every year from 2008–11, including last year’s GP3 title, and is highly regarded in the F1 paddock.

“It feels incredible to be driving in Formula One next season and to be with a team like Williams, with all its pedigree, is even more special,” said Bottas. “I've worked hard to get here ever since I started karting at six years old, but the real work starts now as I prepare myself for the biggest challenge of my career. The fact that I've been with Williams since 2010 will help a lot though because I know the engineers really well and have a good working relationship with them.”

It will be a welcome return to competitive action for Bottas, who concentrated on his test driver role in 2012.

“I'm a naturally very competitive person and I've been competing in triathlons throughout 2012 to keep fit and keep my mind sharp,” he said. “Obviously I've missed racing a great deal so can't wait to get back onto a starting grid, but I've been racing constantly since a very young age so when the lights go out in Australia It will be business as usual.”

WILLIAMS F1 TEAM ANNOUNCES 2013 DRIVER LINE UP

28 November 2012. Grove, UK. The Williams F1 Team is pleased to announce that Pastor Maldonado and Valtteri Bottas will be the team's race drivers for the 2013 FIA Formula One World Championship season.

2013 will be Pastor's third season with the team and comes on the back of a successful 2012 that saw him win the Spanish Grand Prix in commanding style. Valtteri has been the Williams F1 Team's test driver since 2010. In his role as reserve driver Valtteri has taken part in a number of this season's Friday practice sessions, impressing with his pace and maturity from the outset. The GP3 champion in 2011, 2013 will see Valtteri compete in the Formula One World Championship for the first time.

Commenting on his contract renewal for 2013, Pastor said; ''I'm really enjoying my time with Williams and I was obviously very happy when I was told that I would be continuing with the team in 2013. 2012 was a memorable year for me with the win in Barcelona and we made a big step forward in terms of performance. I have a lot of confidence in the team and hopefully next year will see us move even further up the grid and taste more success.''

Speaking about his new role, Valtteri commented: ''It has always been my life-long dream to compete in the Formula One World Championship. To do so with one of the most legendary teams in the sport is incredibly special. I've really enjoyed my three years with Williams so far and feel very at home here so my goal was always to stay for 2013 and progress to a race seat. Q&A WITH VALTTERI BOTTAS

Q: You've been part of Williams since joining the team as a test driver in 2010, how does it feel to finally be race driver for the team?
VB: It feels incredible to be driving in Formula One next season and to be with a team like Williams, with all its pedigree, is even more special. I've worked hard to get here ever since I started karting at six years old, but the real work starts now as I prepare myself for the biggest challenge of my career. The fact that I've been with Williams since 2010 will help a lot though because I know the engineers really well and have a good working relationship with them.

Q: What are your objectives for the 2013 season?
VB: It's difficult to set objectives before the season starts, so I'm just trying to make the most of this opportunity to prove the team has been right to promote me to a race seat. I want to look back on 2013 and feel that I've improved as a driver and helped the team improve its performance on the track.

Q: After being GP3 Champion in 2011, you spent last season out of racing focusing on your Reserve Driver role at Williams, how much will that effect you?
VB: I'm a naturally very competitive person and I've been competing in triathlons throughout 2012 to keep fit and keep my mind sharp. Obviously I've missed racing a great deal so can't wait to get back onto a starting grid, but I've been racing constantly since a very young age so when the lights go out in Australia It will be business as usual.

Q: What do you make of your now team mate, Pastor Maldonado?
VB: Pastor showed at a number of tracks in 2012 that he's very quick and the win in Barcelona showed that he can cope well with pressure. We get on well off the track as we've spent a lot of time together travelling to the various races, and I'll certainly benefit and learn from his greater experience.

Q: How much of an advantage is it to know the engineers, team and Williams procedures so well already?
VB: I've been part of the Williams family since the start of 2010 and feel very at home both at Grove and at the track. I know my engineers very well so we already know how to get the best performance from each other. I also live in the UK and last year moved just down the road from the factory so I am there quite a lot and know everyone well. Because of that we can focus immediately on the 2013 season and what we can achieve together.

Q: How much will the 15 FP1 sessions you drove in 2012 help you moving forward?
VB: This will be a big help as it means there are only a handful of circuits on the 2013 calendar that I have never driven, in Australia, Monaco, Valencia, Austin and Singapore. There will still be a lot of work to do but it means that I do have some knowledge to work from heading to most races next season.

Q: Williams Executive Director, Toto Wolff is part of your management team. How much was he involved in the decision to promote you to race driver?
VB: Toto is part of my management team and has always supported by career, but because of his involvement with Williams he wasn't part of the negotiations for my contract with the team. As with all decisions at Williams, Sir Frank and the Board of Directors get to make the final decision. I'm grateful to Toto for helping introduce me to the Williams F1 Team, but it has been up to me to prove to Frank and the rest of the team that I have the talent and commitment to deliver the results they desire.

Q: What do you think it means for Finland to have another F1 driver on the grid?
VB: Hopefully they are proud to have another Finnish driver in Formula One and I hope to get a lot of support from the Finnish fans who have always been very good to me. To have another Finnish flag on the car next year will be very special.

Q: You have considerable support from Finland, can you tell us about that?
VB: I've had a lot of support from back home, starting way back in karting and since then I have been lucky to have been supported by some great Finnish companies. Without this sort of backing I would not be where I am today, so I'm very grateful and hopefully I can taste success with Williams and pay back those who have helped me get to Formula One.

Q: Fast forward to this time next year, what achievements would you be happy with?
VB: As a team I think we should be aiming to score more points than this year and really get the most out of the car. Personally I hope to look back and feel that I have learnt a lot and developed as a driver over the course of the season, having scored a lot of points for the team.

Q&A WITH SIR FRANK WILLIAMS

Q: 2013 will see Pastor Maldonado and Valtteri Bottas as the Williams F1 Team's driver line up. How do you think they will complement each other as drivers?
FW: Both drivers are very strong in their own right and I'm excited about what they can achieve next year. Pastor has shown this season that he is one of the fastest drivers in Formula One and has put in some stellar qualifying performances. Valtteri has already shown in what little running he has had that he can be on the pace quickly, so we should have two drivers that can get the most out of our car's undoubted potential. They are also easy to get along with, which always helps in building good relationships with the engineers and developing the car.

Q: 2013 will be Pastor Maldonado's third season for Williams, what has impressed you most about him since he started?
FW: Pastor has incredible raw pace and the ability to ring the neck of a car and find speed where others would not. He is showing more and more maturity with each race and his dominant display at the Spanish Grand Prix showed that he can handle pressure and drive a flawless race. With another season under his belt, I'm sure that next year he can confirm his position as one of the top drivers.

Q: Valtteri Bottas is regarded as one of the hottest prospects in Formula One. What qualities did you seen in him to make the decision to promote him from test driver to racing driver?
FW: Valtteri has been part of the Williams family for three years now and I know that he's thought of very highly of by our race engineers and others in the paddock. His ability to assimilate information quickly is excellent, and he has shown in 2012 during Friday practice that he can quickly get up to speed at a new track. That will be important next year because the first season is always the toughest, particularly with the caliber of the other drivers.

Q: Do you think the fact that Valtteri has been with Williams since 2010 will be a big factor in allowing him to settle in quickly in his first season in Formula One?
FW: It's definitely a big advantage. He spends a lot of time in the factory so has managed to develop good relationships and knows how we like to operate. By that token we also know how he likes to work, which is crucial as developing a car throughout the season requires good two way communication. Having a new driver who has spent three seasons testing the car and conducting extensive simulator work means that he is as prepared for his first season as you can get.

Q: How would you evaluate the 2012 season for Williams as a whole?
FW: The FW34 was a strong car and on the whole we feel that we should have done better with the equipment we had. Our long run pace was consistently strong and whilst we need to improve on our qualifying pace, at certain tracks we did manage to give the top teams a run for their money over a single lap. Of course the win in Spain was memorable and showed that we can produce race winning cars. The rate of progression we have shown over 2011 has been very encouraging and I'm confident that with the people we have in place, 2013 will see us move further up the grid.

Q: What would you be satisfied with this time next year from the Williams F1 Team?
FW: Making predictions is always dangerous, particularly given the unpredictable nature of the 2012 season. Nevertheless, we will be looking to build on 2012 and produce a car that can consistently finish in the points at a wide range of circuits and challenge for podiums as well.

Q: Now you've been confirmed as a Williams driver for a third season, what are your thoughts heading into 2013?
PM: 2013 will be an important season for the team. In my first season we had a lot of problems with the car, but this year we made a big step forward in performance and managed to capture a memorable win in Barcelona. We have a lot of potential as a team and next year we must continue this upward trend and produce a car that can challenge for strong points finishes and podiums at a wide range of circuits.

Q: How will the consistency of staying with Williams for a third season benefit you?
PM: It will be a massive benefit because I feel very comfortable within the team and know how people like to operate and that always helps when it comes to developing the car and giving feedback. In the last two years we have been learning together as a team, making good progress in the past 12 months and with another season under my belt I can help develop the car even more.

Q: What are your objectives for the 2013 season?
PM: The goal is to be more competitive next year and have a car that is consistently in the points and challenging for podiums. This year we showed excellent pace at a number of tracks such as Barcelona, Monaco and Abu Dhabi, but we didn't have the consistency to maintain that at every Grand Prix. We have all the tools needed to push the top teams, and hopefully we can learn from this year and move further up the field.

Q: What are your thoughts on the Williams F1 Team?
PM: Williams is one of the big names in Formula One with a really strong pedigree so it is an honour to be driving for them. Whilst we haven't quite achieved the sort of success we would have liked in the past few years, the team is still really strong and we have brought in some new senior people who are making a big difference already. I feel that Williams is close to making a real breakthrough and I want to be a part of a new era of success.

Q: What does it mean to you to remain as part of the Williams family?
PM: Williams really does feel like a family and I have built up very good relationships with people here, in fact some of my best friends work for Williams. A friendly atmosphere can really help on the track as well because I feel like I can communicate freely with the team. A lot of this comes from Frank who is a very inspiring man and has provided me with a lot of advice.

Q: How does it feel knowing that someone like Frank Williams is supporting you?
PM: Frank has had some of the best drivers in the history of Formula One drive for him and he has experienced everything in the sport. To have someone like that as your boss is a big boost for everyone. He demands a lot from his drivers but he has helped me a lot since I started. I want to win as much for him as for myself to pay back the faith he has shown in me.

Q: How did it feel to bring Williams its first win since the 2004 Brazilian Grand Prix?
PM: As a driver you always dream of winning a Formula One race and to win so early on in my career was very special. We have worked so hard to build a car that can win races and Barcelona proved that we can still compete with the top teams. It was a very popular win throughout the paddock and the atmosphere on the podium will always stay with me.

Q: What do you make of your new team mate, Valtteri Bottas?
PM: It will be a new experience and one that I am looking forward to. As a rookie he will have a lot to learn, but from what I have seen so far he has a lot of talent. It's in the team's interest for both of us to be scoring points from the very first race, so I can provide advice to him as someone who has two seasons under my belt. I've spent a lot of time with him this year as he has driven in many FP1 sessions and travelled with the team and we get on very well which is always helpful.

Q: Fast forward to this time next year, what achievements would you be happy with?
PM: I would be happy if we finished higher than eighth in the constructors' championship. I firmly believe that we have all the tools we need to become a top team again and fight for podiums more consistently that we have this year. It's not easy as the standard is so high right now, but the gap between the teams is very small which means that a few tenths per lap can make all the difference.

Q: Looking even further ahead, what do you want to achieve in your career with Williams?
PM: My ambition is to win the world championship and I'd love to be able to do that with Williams and be alongside some of the greats who have won titles here. I feel ready to fight for wins and after tasting success this year I want to experience that again as soon as possible.
