MotoTestRide 2011 Triumph Speed Triple

Posted: 27 Feb 2012 09:00 PM PST

Hey, what’s going on guys? I know, it’s 2012 already, and we’re still playing catch up with bikes from last year. But anyways, the good folks over at Ace Motorsports were cool enough to lend us a 2011 Triumph Speed Triple for the day.

According to Paul, it’s the chassis improvements on the Speed Triple that are most noticeable. He felt that he was sitting much closer to the front of the bike than on the old bike, placing more weight over the front end. More front-end weight is added by the re-positioned engine and the battery being mounted behind the forks.

What I was trying to say in the video, was that the new bike may have the same old 1050cc engine, but more power (and importantly more torque) had been squeezed out of it thanks to the bigger crankcase vents, revised ECU settings, a much bigger airbox and a freer flowing exhaust system.

Stay tuned for more updates, and be sure to order your copy of our new Winter/ Spring 2012 print edition of Inline Performance Magazine HERE. Don’t worry, shipping is free!

TECHART Program for the Porsche 911 will debut in Geneva

An elegant appearance with a clear sporty design – simply unmistakable. Welcome to the premiere of the TECHART Program for the Porsche 911. The completely newly developed TECHART exterior design for the Carrera and Carrera S models will be officially presented as part of the 2012 Geneva Motor Show in a few weeks.

From every angle: distinctively TECHART

One glance at the newly designed front end and you immediately recognize the sporty character of the vehicle. The two-part TECHART front spoiler with an integrated splitter fits perfectly into the design of the sports car and allows the front to sit even closer to the ground. In addition, two Aero Wings, which are integrated into the front air inlet vents, lend the car a new and dynamic shaft outline.

There is a clear TECHART statement on the rear of the Porsche 911: the fixed rear spoiler with a striking trailing edge and an integrated third brake light, which assimilates with the line of the roof and reflects the overall sporty impression from every angle. As your gaze continues downwards, the TECHART rear diffusor and the TECHART side skirts on the wing of the vehicle complete the exterior range. Subtle trim panels for the front headlights as well as side mirror panels provide further highlights that come with an assured sense of style.

Thanks to the new TECHART exhaust system with valve control including EC-type approval, as well as the dual oval tubes, the Porsche 911 combines its visual appearance with an impressive and attractive acoustic.

For unique exterior design, TECHART offers its customers the classic and elegant TECHART Formula 5-spoke light alloy wheel in 20- and 21-inch sizes for the new Carrera and Carrera S. Similarly, the TECHART Formula III forged wheel with five dynamically designed double spokes is available in 20 and 21-inch. This wheel offers a weight advantage of up to 15 % compared to a cast wheel and the connected reduction in unsprung mass contributes to an immediate increase in driving dynamics.

Individualization without limits in the TECHART factory

For the interior of the sports car there is a range of the finest materials, stylish color combinations and numerous modification options, giving the customer the chance to implement all of the customizations they want. The exhibition display car for the Geneva Motor Show features a high quality modified interior in the finest black leather and alcantara. The vehicle-color-coordinated stitching combined with the matt-painted interior components in racing yellow and black, as well as the carbon fibre trim, uncompromisingly reflect the sporting nature of the vehicle in the interior too. The ergonomically shaped TECHART 3-spoke sports steering wheel with the perfectly integrated TECHART paddle shifters for a precise control, as well as simple and fast shifting, completes the dynamic TECHART appearance in the interior of the Porsche 911 Carrera S.

Volkswagen Close to Deal for Porsche Stake

Posted: 27 Feb 2012 05:06 AM PST

Volkswagen AG (VOW3), Europe’s largest carmaker, is closing in on a deal to purchase the remaining 50.1 percent stake in Porsche SE’s automotive business that it does not already own, people familiar with the matter said.

Approval from German tax authorities is one of the hurdles to an agreement, which VW and Porsche (PAH3) are still negotiating, the people said, declining to be identified discussing private talks. VW may announce the plan within the next two weeks, the people said. VW (VOW3) is considering setting up an umbrella company to purchase the stake, according to one of the people.

VW has considered alternatives to a 2009 agreement, which called for a full merger by the end of 2011, after lawsuits against Porsche in the U.S. and Germany complicated the company’s valuation. VW’s main alternative to the original merger agreement has been to exercise options to acquire the remaining stake in Porsche’s automaking business for 3.9 billion euros ($5.2 billion), leaving Porsche as the holding company for the 50.7 percent of Volkswagen’s (VOW3) common stock that it owns.

The plan currently under consideration would allow VW to fully integrate Porsche (PAH3)’s carmaking business, of which it already owns 49.9 percent, while leaving the listed Porsche holding company to take legal responsibility for the outcome of the lawsuits. VW’s supervisory board is meeting today and will discuss the deal, one of the people said. An announcement of the agreement is not expected today, the person said.

Shares Rise

“For VW, this would be a good deal,” said Arndt Ellinghorst, a London-based Credit Suisse analyst, who has an “outperform” rating on both carmakers. “Integrating the operating business would help them work closer together. For Porsche shareholders, they still have the legal risk.”
Porsche rose as much as 1.25 euros, or 2.6 percent, to 49.80 euros and was up 1.5 percent at 49.27 euros as of 2:01 p.m. in Frankfurt trading. Wolfsburg, Germany-based VW traded 1.4 percent lower at 137.35 euros.

“VW is working on creating an integrated automobile company with Porsche under commercially sensible conditions and as quickly as possible,” said Marco Dalan, a VW spokesman, declining further comment. Wolfgang Glabus, a Porsche spokesman in Stuttgart, said the company is continuing to work toward an agreement.

Exercising Options

VW cannot exercise the options until Nov. 15, 2012, when they would trigger a tax bill of an estimated 1 billion euros, overwhelming potential savings from the deal. The taxes would shrink to zero if the carmaker waits until the second half of 2014 before exercising the options, it has said.

The world’s second-largest carmaker after General Motors Co. will avoid having to pay the taxes if it completes the purchase before 2014 by setting up the holding company to temporarily take control of the stake, German magazine Der Spiegel reported last month, citing unidentified VW managers.

Volkswagen has said that the combination with Porsche (PAH3) will boost profitability and save 700 million euros. VW, whose main luxury brands include Audi, Lamborghini and Bugatti, makes more vehicles in a week than Porsche (PAH3) does in a year.

The two companies had worked on a full-blown merger since 2009, when Porsche failed in a hostile attempt to take over VW, the sports-car maker’s biggest supplier. Porsche racked up more than 10 billion euros of debt as it purchased the majority of VW’s common shares.

Working Closely

The two companies have worked closely with one another since the attempted takeover of VW. Martin Winterkorn serves as the chief executive officer for VW and Porsche, while Hans Dieter Poetsch is the chief financial officer for both.

Winterkorn is seeking to integrate Porsche’s lucrative manufacturing operation, which builds the 911 sports car and Cayenne sport-utility vehicle, into VW to bolster his goal of surpassing GM. The VW group, which also owns the Skoda and Seat brands, delivered a record 8.27 million vehicles last year.

Short sellers of VW stock sued Porsche in the U.S., claiming it secretly piled up VW shares and later caused the investors to lose more than $1 billion. Claimants in Germany have also sought damages, while prosecutors in Stuttgart, where Porsche is based, are investigating suspicions that the sports- car maker didn’t adequately inform investors about its plan to take control of VW. Porsche has repeatedly denied all allegations of wrongdoing.

VRC: Kieran Griffin Plans Further Scirocco Success

Kieran Griffin, a first-time race winner in 2011, is to return to the APR Volkswagen Racing Cup this season with the aim of scoring further victories. He will again be at the wheel of the Addison Lee Scirocco with which both he and his younger brother Liam – now a BTCC driver – have enjoyed success.

“I’m very much looking forward to the new season,” said 41-year-old Kieran, “and will still be racing in the Scirocco. No dramatic changes are planned beyond trying to develop the car to make it more competitive.” The car will again be prepared by Mark Jenkins’ SlideSports team, and will be one of a host of Sciroccos on the grid.

“It’s exciting to see a new flock of Sciroccos coming in this season under the championship’s new stewardship,” added Griffin. “This will only be a good thing for the racing and image of the Volkswagen Racing Cup. Obviously I am looking for some podiums and hopefully much more consistency.”

In addition to the new title sponsor, the US Volkswagen Group tuning specialist APR, the championship enjoys additional support from Ceva, ECM, Eibach, Hankook and Paragon. The series is about to enter its 13th season and is the sole saloon-racing supporting event to British GT and British F3. This year the championship will also race at Brands Hatch alongside the German touring car championship and at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium as a supporting event to the 25-hour Fun Cup. The action gets underway at Oulton Park over Easter.
