The MV Agusta that Could

Posted: 30 Dec 2011 09:00 PM PST

What’s up people? MV claims their new F3 will take the supersport class by storm, thanks to its high power, light weight and sophisticated electronics. But how can a company with a fraction of the staff and investment of the major players manage to build a class-leading bike for competitive money? Most specifically, Triumph?

Gianluca Negri sketched out the first version in his spare time back in 2006, so when the late Claudio Castiglioni told Negri he needed a new three-cylinder engine, an initial version was already underway. It then took another four iterations of the basic layout to get to the production version with 132bhp.

Incredibly there are just four people who have worked on the actual design of this engine from the start of the project. The original design rules laid down by Castiglioni stated the engine had to be the most compact in class and Negri is very proud the finished production version is just 3.5mm wider than the first version despite having to move the generator from the back of the engine to the left side to keep production costs down.

The F3 was the last bike the late Claudio Castiglioni saw in finished form before his death, and he played a big role in making sure it met the strict criteria laid down at the start of the project in terms of styling. British designer Adrian Morton worked on the bike's design almost completely on his own but it was the exacting demands of Castiglioni's brief that gave him the biggest headaches during the development.

MV's test team has been busy over the past three years on both the road and the track as it prepared the F3 for production with a team of three test riders, four mechanics and the boss. A new development for the F3 was getting a wide selection of employees to ride the bike and give feedback as it developed.

Aristide Cremonese is the head of the test team. He said: "Our work starts with building of the very first prototype bikes and progresses all of the way through to production while carrying out all of the testing needed. The F3 has covered around 250,000km (156,000 miles) in total through all of the different versions but that doesn't take into account the engine dyno testing.

The F3 has the most comprehensive set of electronics ever seen on a supersport bike, with all of the work done by just three permanent MV Agusta staff and technicians from Eldor, the ECU design company.

Traction control can be fine-tuned through eight levels of intervention, the throttle is fully electronic ride-by-wire with four different riding maps available too; Rain, Sport, Normal and Custom. All of these can be tweaked and adjusted within each map according to the rider's preference.

2013 BMW R1250GS Caught Adventuring

Posted: 29 Dec 2011 09:00 PM PST

Hi guys! The new 2013 BMW R1250GS has been caught adventuring, again. The clearest image yet of BMW's next generation boxer, the so-called 2013 BMW R1250GS have been posted up on Facebook, and it's definitely different, even if those differences aren't immediately noticeable.

While we were hoping to see the liquid-cooled bike on showroom floors in 2012, we're guessing BMW is taking extra precautions to ensure the company's flagship model is absolutely perfect. So what are we seeing? Evolution, not revolution. Translation? Small tweaks little by little.

You can check out the rest of the photos by logging onto Facebook. Happy New Years guys!

Motorcycle Crash by Stuntbusters

Posted: 26 Dec 2011 09:00 PM PST

Hey, what’s going on guys? For those of you who don’t have the SPEED channel, there is a show on there called Stuntbusters. In the video below, the Stuntbusters attempt to show how professional motorcycle stunt riders stage a crash without getting hurt. Check it out.

Personally, I am not sure what to think of this episode. While I am glad that they are teaching something about motorcycle safety, I do question how safe what they are teaching is. Like one of the commenters on the YouTube site argues, if you have time to anticipate laying down your bike, you would have time to swerve out of the way or attempt another safety maneuver.

I guess what they do is needed in the movies to make scenes more realistic. I wouldn’t want to be the one testing out their trick though.

How the Trumph Tiger 1200 Explorer was Redesigned

Posted: 25 Dec 2011 09:00 PM PST

What’s up people? The all-new Triumph Tiger 1200 Explorer, directly targeted at the BMW R1200GS, went through a major, late transformation to end up as we see it now.

The U.K.’s MCN was given exclusive access to Triumph’s designers and management at its Hickley HQ in Leicestershire to get the full story of the 1200cc adventure bike’s development.

Original concept drawings were dominated by a vast, ‘saddle type’ 25-liter fuel tank. Although originally approved, this style was scrapped daringly late in the development process.

Restyle of the Explorer’s tank and seat (by Newcastle design consultants Xenophya) in autumn 2010 was intended to create a lighter, less intimidating look. Tank capacity has now also been reduced to 20 liters.

At the firm’s main factory, Triumph Product Manager Simon Warburton told MCN that the key aim of the new Ewplorer is to be “an attractive alternative to the BMW R1200GS”. The key ingredients to achieve that, he explained, were:

A three-cylinder engine – “We never considered anything else”
A single-sided shaft drive – “We know people like it”
1215cc capacity – “To future-proof it a little bit”
A minimum 130bhp – “We wanted a good level of performance”
Ride-by-wire and a class-leading, high output alternator to ensure reliability and power accessories.

How to Build a Ducati 1199 Panigale Superbike

Posted: 24 Dec 2011 09:00 PM PST

Hi guys, the targets laid down for the 1199 Panigale were so strict, so binding and so difficult to achieve that nothing less than a complete rethink was going to be enough.

That meant ditching Ducati’s tradition of a steel trellis frame and embracing something completely new.

The biggest break with Ducati tradition is the all-new aluminum monocoque chassis which, says Ducati’s Claudio Domenicali, has nothing to do with marketing and everything to do with engineering necessity.

The monocoque replaces the trademark Ducati steel trellis frame with a die-cast aluminum airbox which acts as a stressed part of the chassis with the steering head and engine directly attached to it.

Domenicali explains: “The monocoque chassis deign stems from the absolute rule we set out at the start of the design to reduce overall weight by 10kg. This new chassis design was simply the only way we were going to achieve that. The monocoque chassis is responsible for half of the weight saving of the bike.”

The top specification S and S Tricolore versions of the 1199 Panigale are introducing electrically controlled and adjusted Ohlins suspension into the superbike category for the first time.

The 43mm Ohlins NIX30 forks can be adjusted for compression and rebound damping using a switch on the left handlebar. Spring preload remains a manual adjustment.

At the rear the Ohlins TTX36 has the same twin tube damping adjustment as seen at the top levels of racing. It is also electronically adjustable for compression and rebound with preload operated by hand. The shock’s side-mounted design should make it easy to adjust.

Domenicali explains: “We wanted this bike to give a quantum leap in terms of the emotion of riding. We wanted riders to have a similar reaction to the bike as to a track-ready bike.”

You won’t be seeing these Brembo M50 monobloc calipers on any other bike as Ducati has signed an exclusive deal with the Italian firm. Not only do they look amazing but the compact caliper design contributes to a 500g weight saving over previous versions.

They are machined from a single piece of alloy making them stiffer and helping to resist distortion in racing – that’s vital in the Superstock class as standard calipers have to be retained. Each caliper has four 40mm pistons. ABS is an option.

There are two versions of wheels available on the Panigale. The standard 1199 features a new design of 10-spoke with a 3.5in wide front and 6in wide rear wheel. Each wheel is 500g lighter than previous designs.

The S and S Tricolore versions have forged aluminum triple three spoke wheels which save a further 400g.

The rear of all versions of the bike has a Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP tire in a 200/55/17 size; the widest ever fitted to a road-going superbike.

Head of WSB racing, Ernesto Marinelli explains how Ducati got the 200/55/17 tire size: “We have 20 years of racing data. We extrapolated information about power, wheelbase and tire size and the 200/55 tire size was one of the first elements of the 1199 which was set along with the road bike power and weight.”

TRG announces Pumpelly, Bertheau team for 2012 Grand-Am Series

Posted: 19 Dec 2011 06:30 PM PST

TRG Watkins Glen

The Racer’s Group announced today that two stalwarts from its 2011 Daytona 24 champion GT team. Spencer Pumpelly and Steve Bertheau, will not only return to defend their title but will embark on a full-season effort in the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series in 2012. Pumpelly and Bertheau will form the nucleus of the defending championship team that will take to the high-banks of Daytona before the duo continues the 13-race Grand-Am Rolex Series schedule. The two will compete in a 2012 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, wearing the No. 67 Sargent & Lundy/TRG banner.

While TRG’s complete driver lineups for the Daytona 24 have yet to be announced, team owner Kevin Buckler indicated that he is expecting another armada with which to attack America’s 24-hour endurance classic for its historic 50th Anniversary celebration. A year ago, TRG fielded five cars, and Buckler anticipates another similar assault from GT class again for 2012.

“I can’t even begin to express how thrilled I am to have a guy like Steve back in the car and back with TRG for 2012. He has been a great driver and a great friend!” team owner Kevin Buckler states. “Watching Steve work so hard on his driving and now be able to come back to tracks for the 2nd time, well this should be good. And to be able to pair him up with a proven sports car veteran like Pumpelly… this is what TRG is all about! The 2012 season is sure to be exciting!”

“Winning Daytona last year was one of the biggest thrills of my life and certainly the the highlight of my race career to date,” said Bertheau. “To have the chance to defend with Spencer and a team like TRG is a once in a lifetime moment. It’s a long race and anything can happen, but I know we will be ready. And I am really looking forward to a full-season as well. Who knows what could happen there!”

Last season was another landmark year for The Racer’s Group, which yielded 12 professional sports car podiums, including GRAND-AM wins at Daytona and Watkins Glen. The trip to victory lane at one of the world’s most famous endurance races to begin the 2011 season was not unprecedented. TRG has won the prestigious 24-hour American race four times, including once overall from GT class in the now famous Monster Cable Porsche.

“Coming back to Daytona with Steve and all of the TRG guys to defend our 2011 victory is really going to be neat.” Pumpelly states. “We made memories last season that we’ll never forget. I can’t wait to find out what 2012 has in store.”

“We have been working diligently and feverishly during the off-season to defend a title that has become very important to us and is the pinnacle of endurance racing in the U.S.,” said Buckler. “As further announcements roll out, I think you will see how serious we are about winning this race in this very historic year.”

The No. 67 Sargent & Lundy/TRG Porsche 911 GT3 Cup will begin preparation for its defense at the January 6-8 “Roar Before the 24″ event at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Volkswagen returns to Super Bowl XLVI

VW New Beetle Racer spot for Super Bowl XLV after the jump.

Volkswagen of America, Inc. announced today it will advertise during the Super Bowl® for the third consecutive year. Following the success of last year’s two 30- second spots, Volkswagen will premiere one 60-second spot at the beginning of the third quarter of Super Bowl XLVI.

The spot will feature the all-new Beetle, which arrived in dealerships in September. The 2012 Beetle was teased as a silhouette in last year’s advertisement, but the iconic redesign is now ready for its Super Bowl close-up.

“Volkswagen is excited to showcase the all-new 2012 Beetle on football’s biggest stage. The Super Bowl is the perfect platform to feature the bold, dynamic, and sportiest Beetle ever made,” said Tim Mahoney, Chief Product and Marketing Officer, Volkswagen of America, Inc.

Volkswagen enjoyed unprecedented success after last year’s Super Bowl spots, “The Force” and “Black Beetle”. “The Force”, which featured the 2012 Passat and mini Darth Vader, quickly became a pop culture phenomenon when it debuted online before the Super Bowl. It was voted the Number One ad of the year by ADWEEK and continues to be a hit with consumers, racking up more than 45 million views on YouTube.

The overwhelming attention from the commercial piqued interest in the 2012 Passat months before it hit the market. This ensured that the car entered the market with momentum, with more sales in its first two months than the last Passat model sold in all of 2010.

“Black Beetle” teased the all-new Beetle’s muscular shape, generating strong interest for the newly redesigned car months before it hit dealerships. The 2012 Beetle is available in two forms: stylish Beetle and sporty Beetle Turbo. All models offer standard technology features such as Bluetooth® and an iPod® interface, heatable front seats, and a ‘kaeferfach’ secondary glovebox.

More details about the 2012 Volkswagen Super Bowl ad will follow, but expect a fully integrated digital, social media, and grassroots campaign to accompany the spot that will run during one of TV’s most-watched events.

Audi R8 LMS Cup series for China in 2012

Audi will be permanently present in the world's largest sales market in motorsport as well. Starting in 2012, the Audi R8 LMS Cup as an exclusive one-make racing series will underscore the company's leading position in the premium segment in China. Audi Sport customer racing China will be responsible for the operational activities.

In 2012, Audi is setting a milestone in China's still young motorsport tradition. The world's first exclusive one-make cup for the Audi R8 LMS will be held in the fast-growing Chinese market. In October, with a growth rate of 61.7 percent compared to the same period of the prior year, Audi experienced a new record month in China. The next top performance followed in November, reflecting a 68.8 percent increase compared to the same prior-year month.

The R8 LMS GT3 race car with a power output of 411 kW (560 HP) will be competing at five events, including the internationally renowned circuits at Shanghai and Zhuhai, starting in the second quarter of 2012. Plans are for 16 vehicles of Audi's customer sport model to be fielded in the one-make cup. The cars correspond to the GT3 version that has scored more than 100 international victories and 13 titles and feature the new Audi PS 1 safety seat as factory-supplied equipment. “The Audi R8 LMS Cup puts our motorsport activities in China on a permanent basis," says Rene Koneberg, Head of Audi Sport customer racing China. “Audi was a pioneer in the premium vehicle market in China. Now we want to give motor racing in this country a similar impulse."

Audi R8 LMS Cup series for China in 2012

Audi Sport customer racing China will be responsible for organizing the one-make cup. This new structure experienced an extremely impressive debut. At the finale of the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup (ILMC) at Zhuhai the race team celebrated a one-two victory in the GTC class with the Audi R8 LMS. A week later, at the Macau GT Cup, Edoardo Mortara won an extremely challenging city street race in an Audi R8 LMS fielded by the team.

Audi through its Audi race experience China opens up the opportunity to contest races in professional conditions to the motorsport enthusiasts among its customers. The complete packages available to gentlemen drivers include everything a racer needs, from license training and the ready-to-run race car through to the organizational structure.

Audi expects to deliver more than 300,000 vehicles in China in fiscal year 2011. The company is the market leader in the premium segment. “China has meanwhile become a kind of second home to Audi," says Dr. Dietmar Voggenreiter, Managing Director of Audi China. “By entering motorsport we aim to start proving 'Vorsprung durch Technik' on the race tracks of this dynamic country as well."
