Audi is starting to the Nurburgring 24 Hours from the front row. In Friday’s top 40 qualifying, Christian Mamerow in the Audi R8 LMS ultra took position two on the grid. At the 40th running of the Eifel classic, five Audi R8 LMS ultra qualified for the seven front rows.

As early as on lap one of the top 40 qualifying session Christian Mamerow managed to set a lap time of 8m 19.700s which initially made him the front runner. In the only other timed lap that was permitted Uwe Alzen was the only driver to be quicker once more than the Audi racer. Team Mamerow Racing achieved this remarkable performance in its debut season with the new Audi R8 LMS ultra – Team Director Peter Mamerow had only taken over the GT3 sports car in March. This result marked an especially pleasing outcome of the qualifying event for Audi – particularly since the work of all five Audi teams was not centered on chasing for a single fast time but on thorough and comprehensive preparation for the race.

The second-best Audi driver in the final qualifying session was Frank Stippler. At the wheel of the Audi R8 LMS ultra of Audi Sport Team Phoenix he managed to set the eighth-best time on the 25.378-kilometer Eifel roller-coaster. Three other Audi drivers – Edward Sandström (Speedhunters Team WRT), Marc Basseng (Audi Sport Team Phoenix) and Thomas Mutsch (Raeder Motorsport) – achieved positions eleven to 13. The Audi race experience is starting into the race from rows 13 and 14.

Qualifying marked the conclusion of a very thorough preparation phase of the Audi squads for the Nurburgring 24 Hours. Audi Sport Team Phoenix just like the teams supported by Audi Sport customer racing, Audi race experience, Mamerow Racing, Raeder Motorsport and Speedhunters Team WRT, used the free practice and the first two qualifying sessions to optimally set up the seven Audi R8 LMS ultra cars for the 24-hour racing distance. The work was centered on programs for the suspension set-up, aerodynamics, fuel consumption and the Michelin tires. Until Friday afternoon all cars were converted to the component specifications for the race.

Germany’s biggest race will start at 16:00 on Saturday. From 15:30 on, www.audi.tv will broadcast the entire competition up to the finish by live streaming.

N24: Marc Lieb places Team Manthey Porsche sixth on grid

Porsche 911 GT3 R, Wochenspiegel Team Manthey: Marc Lieb, Romain Dumas, Lucas Luhr, Richard Lietz

In the newly-introduced top 40 qualifying, Porsche works driver Marc Lieb (Germany) secured a good starting position for the 40th running of the Nurburgring 24 hour race with sixth place. Lieb shares the cockpit of the 911 GT3 R (Wochenspiegel Team Manthey) with fellow factory pilots Richard Lietz (Austria) and Romain Dumas (France) as well as racing professional Lucas Luhr (Germany). The race tomorrow will start at 16.00 hours.

“I’m satisfied with my lap, it was very good and the quickest that we’ve ever driven the Porsche here,” stated Marc Lieb, who won the long distance classic last year with Dumas, Luhr and Timo Bernhard. “I lost maybe one or two tenths of a second but it’s nothing serious. Even if I’d driven an absolutely faultless lap, I still couldn’t have made up the missing three seconds to the fastest. We’re also happy with the balance of the car. A lot can happen in 24 hours.”

Also pleased with their time was the second Wochenspiegel quartet in a 911 GT3 MR. Securing 19th in qualifying, the Nordschleife expert Jochen Krumbach (Germany) was the second best Porsche pilot amongst the top 40 qualifiers. Under the direction of Olay Manthey, the most successful team boss at the endurance classic with five overall victories, Krumbach teams up with his compatriots Oliver Kainz, Michael Jacobs and Georg Weiss. “All in all I’m happy with my lap time. After all, 8.26 minutes over more than 25 kilometres is very good under these circumstances,” said Krumbach.

Porsche factory pilot Marco Holzer (Germany) was somewhat disheartened with his 21st spot on the grid: “I wasn’t able to properly use the tyre grip on my fastest lap. But our set-up is good, so we won’t let it get us down. Our motto is now to look ahead, have a trouble-free race and make the best out of it.” The 22-year-old shares the 911 GT3 R fielded by Manthey-Racing with Porsche works drivers Joerg Bergmeister (Germany) and Patrick Long (USA) as well as Nick Tandy (Great Britain), the reigning champion of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland.

Taking up the race directly behind Holzer are three other 911. Position 22 is occupied by the driver line-up Sabine Schmitz, Klaus Abbelen, Christopher Bruck (all Germany) and Patrick Huisman (Netherlands). Taking up the marathon from the 23rd spot in Timbuli Racing’s 911 GT3 R are Marc Hennerici, Marco Seefried, Dennis Busch (all Germany) and Norbert Siedler (Austria). Christian Menzel (Germany), Emmanuel Collard (France), Mike Stursberg (Germany) and H.G Riegel (Germany) secured the 24th starting position for the Haribo Racing team. The second 911 run by Timbuli Racing starts from the 33rd spot.

Falken Motorsports under the direction of Sven Schnabl was not permitted to participate in the top 40 qualifying because it inadvertently went out on the track too early during the last practice. Like last year, at the wheel of the 911 GT3 R are four experienced and well-rehearsed pilots. Joining Porsche works driver Wolf Henzler (Germany) for the 24 hour chase are Sebastian Asch (Germany), Martin Ragginger (Austria) and Peter Dumbreck (Great Britain) driving for the Falken Motorsports squad.

The top 40 qualifying was introduced for the 40th anniversary of the race. The criteria to take part in the top 40 qualifying were the results of the first three Nurburgring Long Distance Championship races as well as the qualifying results of the 24 hour event. The qualifying order is then allotted. At about five-second intervals, the vehicles went out onto the track where a formation lap and two timed laps followed. The 24 hour race takes off tomorrow at 16.00 hours. TV station Sport1 broadcasts the entire race via live-streaming on sport1. The TV station also provides extensive coverage from the Nurburgring.

SKODA Citigo Rally design concept

At the largest tuning event featuring vehicles of the Volkswagen Group, SKODA AUTO will show exciting concept cars. At an exhibition area of more than 600 m², the concept cars “SKODA Citigo Rally” and “SKODA Citigo DJ Car” will make their first appearance. In the evening, an international top DJ will perform on the center stage of the SKODA concert area. Tomorrow, seven teams will already set out from Prague with SKODA vehicles and head toward Lake Worthersee in Austria.

The village of Reifnitz is a traditional meeting place for tuning fans. Every year in May, one may experience the pure excitement about automobiles, this year being the 31st time the meeting is held. This meeting is counted among the largest and most important events of its kind. As the third largest brand of the Volkswagen Group, SKODA presents new model highlights to fans as well. For the concert highlight in the evening, SKODA has created a special surprise. The music produced by the almost 100,000 Watt strong sound equipment will be mixed by a DJ in a “SKODA DJ Car”. This vehicle was especially designed by the SKODA design team for the car show at Worthersee. A team of journalists and Czech celebrities in special SKODA models will drive from Prague to the foothills of the Austrian Alps – among them the two Skoda rally champions Jan Kopecky and Juho Hanninen.

SKODA Citigo Rally design concept

“They say the driver’s seat has the best view of Worthersee,” says Jan Kopecky, SKODA Motorsport factory driver. “That’s why I’m excited to be able to experience in person the legendary atmosphere at Worthersee this year.”

The creations based on the new SKODA Citigo are sure to fascinate attendees at SKODA’s stand in Reifnitz. The design of the “SKODA Citigo Rally” takes its dynamics from SKODA rally cars. Its front end impresses with a massive bumper as well as a generous air intake and spoiler. The car’s rear end is marked by a centrally positioned exhaust end pipe and the down-force wing extending the car’s roofline. Low-profile tires on forged 18-inch rims promise stability and uncompromising traction.

Besides the “SKODA Citigo Rally”, another highlight is the appearance of the “SKODA Citigo DJ Car”. Its rear end widens behind the ‘B’ pillars to create an open stage for the DJ inside the car. The “SKODA Citigo DJ Car” will see live action when DJs put on dance music for several thousands of fans on the center stage at night.

The drive from Prague to Lake Worthersee is not about a fast highway trip down to Austria: Instead, participants such as the SKODA rally stars as well as Czech celebrities will have to perform various tasks during the course of the trip. SKODA Fans will be able to follow their results as well as the progress of the trip on the official SKODA Facebook page

Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, has taken the driving trials of the super sports car of the future a step further with completion of the initial prototypes. The 918 Spyder will go into production at the end of September 2013 as planned, with the first customers receiving their vehicles before 2013 is out. “What we are doing with the 918 Spyder is redefining driving fun, efficiency and performance,” said Wolfgang Hatz, Member of the Executive Board Research and Development of Porsche AG.

The prototypes, their camouflage harking back to historical Porsche 917 racing cars, signal the final touches to the 918 Spyder. The focus is on the interplay between the highly sophisticated individual drive components. The combination of combustion engine and two independent electric motors – one on the front axle and one in the drive line, acting on the rear wheels – poses completely new demands on the development of the operating strategies. “They are therefore a critical component in this vehicle into which we have put all of our expertise and capacity for innovation,” said Wolfgang Hatz. These operating strategies and the development of the software to go with them are one of Porsche’s core competences. Both of them have a major influence on the extreme driving fun to be had with the 918 Spyder and they make possible a unique combination of minimal fuel consumption and maximum performance. The initial results of the driving trials are in line with the high expectations placed on the 918 Spyder.

The super sports car is designed as a plug-in hybrid vehicle combining a high-performance combustion engine with cutting-edge electric motors for extraordinary performance: on the one hand, the dynamics of a racing machine boasting more than 770 hp, on the other hand, fuel consumption in the region of three liters per 100 kilometers. Moreover, Porsche is breaking yet more new ground with the technology demonstrator with spectacular solutions such as the full carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) monocoque with unit carrier, fully adaptive aerodynamics, adaptive rear-axle steering and the upward-venting “top pipes” exhaust system. In the process, the 918 Spyder is offering a glimpse of what Porsche Intelligent Performance may be capable of in future.

Z1000 Update

Posted: 15 May 2012 10:00 PM PDT

Although the Z’s nine years old, she’s still able to zip around the streets effortlessly. Most of the recent miles racked up on the bike are commuter and sprint joy rides.

I have yet to do a trackday with this bike, but I imagine that the suspension could use a little adjustment because I'm constantly riding it like a road bicycle around the San Franciscan hills. The steering bearings also need to be replaced because they are greatly notched. Once the bearings are replaced, smoothness, lightness, and evenness will easily be noticed when handling the bike. With these minor fixes I'm sure it would show some more talent in the corners, but not much potential compared to the newer bikes and their capabilities. Riding like this makes for a good workout on city streets though.

I recently had a mini service done at 32,228 miles and the only major things changed were the rear tire and the oil. Before, the bike had a 190/50ZR Dunlop d616 rear tire which provided a wider surface area for turning, but also adding a stall to the bike's cornering. I switched to a 180/55 d616 to see how I’d like it, and I have to admit that I like it better because the turns are quicker. In addition, the look of the wider tire definitely gives it that extra badass look. I had a talk with one of the mechanics where I got my bike serviced, and they asked me which set of tires I liked compared to the ones I've had. I've been brought up on Bridgestone riding in the streets, and the last set of Bridgestones I had were the Battlax BT-023 Sport Touring tires. At the time when I had my 06' gixxer, this was one of the most modern and cheapest of the Bridgestone tires. I decided to give them a try to see if they would last longer because of the increase in my riding. Bridgestone tires have improved, but are most likely meant for bikes on the heftier side like TRLs, FJRs and bikes of that sort. The slippage feeling due to having a gixxer on flat profile tires that lack grip prove not fun, but the tire held up alright compared to the older Bridgestones I've had.

So between having Maxxis street tires and a bunch of Bridgestones, I have to say the Dunlop d616s are made perfectly for the z1000 on dry land and in the rain. These tires put the confidence in riding everywhere you go, and feeling any type of slippage is an afterthought. Best value tires for this bike because of the aggressive styling and durable performance.

Jay Leno Rides the Mission R

Posted: 14 May 2012 10:00 PM PDT

What’s up people? Check out the crew from Mission Motors stopping by Jay Leno’s Garage with their Mission-R electric motorcycle.

The machine uses 14-kWh lithium-ion batteries paired with a 120-kilowatt motor, which means it packs around 161 horsepower. Mission says it can do 60 miles per hour in around three seconds with a top speed of 160 mph. Not too shabby, eh?

The whole package weighs in at around 550 pounds and gives riders a range of 80-100 miles depending on how much they twist the throttle.
