Ziggy Marley’s custom 2003 Volkswagen EuroVan for sale Posted: 11 May 2011 12:11 PM PDT We’ve been needing a larger vehicle for covering events and races. So, on an attempt to find a ’03 VW Eurovan (T4), we literally just came across this rare, coincidental find on AutoTrader. Why rare? 13K on the odometer! That’s unheard of when it comes to the Eurovan as owners are diehards and drive them everywhere. What made this find coincidental is that on May 11th, 1981, Bob Marley passed away in Miami. Weird. The T4 was last produced for America in 2003. It came with a VR6 with 200hp output. If you have $30K and love thy reggae ‘mon then head over and contact the owner. 2003 Volkswagen EuroVan GLS Minivan 3D Vehicle Highlights- Previously owned by Grammy winner Ziggy Marley, son of reggae legend, Bob Marley. Interview with Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen on the WRC entry Posted: 11 May 2011 11:13 AM PDT Need to know more about Volkswagen’s WRC efforts? Will they be at Dakar 2011? Here’s a small interview with the Head of Volkswagen Motorsport, Kris Nissen. New pics in the gallery as well. Why is Volkswagen entering the WRC? “The new Technical Regulations of the World Rally Championship ideally fit Volkswagen’s philosophy with respect to the development of production vehicles. Downsizing, reliability and high efficiency are top priorities for our customers. The timing of the WRC entry is optimal for Volkswagen. The sporting challenge of designing a vehicle that is competitive and in contention for victory in a large field of challengers holds great appeal for us.” Will Volkswagen continue to contest the Dakar Rally? “There will be no factory commitment at the next Dakar Rally in 2012. The entry of a customer team is being considered at the moment. There are several parties interested in such a project. Volkswagen has achieved all of its aims at the Dakar Rally. We are the first and so far only manufacturer to have won the world’s toughest cross-country rally with innovative diesel technology. And not just once but three consecutive times – Volkswagen has gone down in history with this hat-trick. The “Dakar” will always be near and dear to our hearts and remain a part of our success story. Now, we are tackling a new sporting challenge with great enthusiasm.” For how many years is the WRC commitment designed? “Initially, our program is designed until 2015. After that time, the Management Board will take further decisions according to schedule.” What are Volkswagen’s aims? For which time frame? “Like in any other sport, victory can be the only aim in motorsport. We definitely want to be in contention for the title, and win it too, within the foreseeable future. Please bear with us while we are not able to state an exact date of shooting for the title.” When will the car be used for the first tests? What is the schedule for Volkswagen’s first rally run? “The concept and vehicle design for the Polo R WRC started in February. The roll-out is planned before the end of 2011. Before in-depth trials in an extensive testing program start with the vehicle in 2012 the team will already receive an opportunity in 2011 to gather initial experiences in the World Rally Championship. At the end of the season entries with vehicles of the Volkswagen Group’s Skoda brand are planned at selected rallies.” Has Volkswagen already signed drivers for the WRC? “At the moment we do not have a driver line-up. There is no reason to hurry because we are at a very early stage of our rally commitment. We are taking the time to carefully look at the market. We are, however, already receiving a lot of inquiries. There is keen interest in our project, and we are pleased about that.” Will there be a German driver at Volkswagen? “We are carefully watching the market here as well. It would be great if we had a new Walter Rohrl in Germany. While that would no doubt be helpful to us and to the WRC the drivers’ skills are more important to us than their nationalities. In this area we will no doubt be taking a decision within the next 20 months as well.” - Volkswagen Motorsport Related posts: |
Future move for Porsche Cars North America to old Ford factory location Posted: 11 May 2011 10:30 AM PDT Long time Atlanta residents, Porsche Cars North America is rumored to be moving its location to the old Ford plant site just outside of Hartsfield-Atlanta International Airport. In 1998, PCNA moved its offices from Reno, NV to Atlanta, GA. The plant was where the Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable were built. In 2006, Ford closed the plant and it has since been leveled. Porsche is said to build offices and a test track onsite, similar to the Porsche Experience Center. According to people familiar with the plans but who asked not to be identified because they had not been authorized to speak publicly, the announcement will come on Thursday. Economic development officials from Georgia, Atlanta and Fulton County will take part, though their possible roles in the project are unclear. On Tuesday, officials for Porsche, the Georgia Department of Economic Development, Atlanta and Jacoby Development, which owns the site, had no comment. News of the move, which could involve a couple hundred sales and marketing jobs to Atlanta’s Southside, is an anomaly for the northern suburbs. But it’s a big win for the airport area, which largely missed the building boom that produced skyscrapers in Midtown and Buckhead and office parks in the northern suburbs. Fulton County Commissioner William “Bill” Edwards, whose district includes the Hapeville site, could not confirm the move. But he said Hapeville’s mayor and city council have been working hard to fill the plant site and it makes good economic sense for Porsche, with the site’s proximity to the airport and interstate. Edwards said the announcement should turn the tide for south Fulton. “This is just the first step,” Edwards said. “South Fulton has always been misrepresented as a bunch of poor black folks and poor white folks. Other people are finding out that it’s a diamond in the rough.” The move is a surprise in other logistical ways. Porsche will be leaving the Central Perimeter business district that has several MARTA rail stops and is close to neighborhoods favored for housing and schools by executives. The former Ford plant site, which was closed in 2006, currently is not served by a direct MARTA rail stop, though Jacoby has been angling to arrange a stop from either a future commuter rail line or the airport’s people mover system. Porsche’s move wouldn’t happen right away. It is likely to take several years, as the office building and track would be built from scratch. The company’s current lease was set to expire in 2013. Porsche has been a major anchor tenant of Lakeside Commons, a 14-story tower in Sandy Springs built in 1998, said Tom Miller with Grubb & Ellis. He said Porsche occupies about 2-1/2 floors of that building and would empty about 10 percent of the building if it moves. Currently, the building is 85 percent occupied, Miller said. He represents the building’s owners, Boston-based real estate fund Intercontinental Real Estate Corp. “It’s really good for us because we’ve been sitting over there with the project vacant for a while,” said Hapeville Mayor Alan Hallman. “Assuming the rumors are true, it will jump start the entire Jacoby development. Everyone has been sitting on their hands waiting on the first person to throw the first pitch.” Hallman said that Porsche wants frontage along I-75 which puts it in Atlanta’s city limits. But he said that was fine for his city. “We’ll see if Hapeville will be the first police force in the world with a fleet of Porsches,” he quipped. The track would emulate Porche’s three-year-old Silverstone facility, which offers coaching for drivers on a track imitating realistic driving conditions. Classes start at several hundred dollars. A Porsche-themed restaurant and special events space also is on-site. With no prospects for the Ford site for over four years, many business leaders wondered if anything would emerge from the area. Derek Chapman, who owns Chapman Drug Company in Hapeville, expressed a sense of relief. “Our worst nightmare was that it would be annexed by Atlanta and turned into all parking, which would not help our tax base at all,” he said. Chapman’s family has owned the pharmacy since 1921 and he would love to see more business people patronize his store and other businesses in town. “We already get some business from Wells Fargo and Delta and hopefully, this would add to it,” he said. Atlanta-based Jacoby Development, that helped build Atlantic Station, bought the 122-acre former Ford plant in 2008 for $40.3 million, and has finished removing contaminated buildings and soil from years of industrial use. Initial plans called for an “aerotropolis” of offices, residences and shops that would jive with the nearby airport. But the recession slowed the site’s development. Porsche is the first announced tenant of the site. Jacoby has already announced a private, solar-powered park-and-ride facility to serve Hartsfield’s new international terminal to open next year. Jacoby hasn’t announced the parking company operator and still is shopping for a solar energy provider. - Atlanta Journal Constitution Related posts: |

Equipped with the all new exterior design, exclusive 35th aesthetics and 235hp under the hood, it’s sure to set you apart from the others. Let’s also not forget the Golf24, which it and its livery are in honor of the 35th anniversary. The 35th anniversary of the Golf GTI was an impetus for Volkswagen to create a very special type of anniversary model. In Germany, from May 12th orders are taken for the anniversary model offered under the “Edition 35” label. Even more driving fun: Power increased to 235 PS Since the debut of the first Golf GTI in 1976, this sporty Volkswagen has enjoyed an uninterrupted history of success spanning 35 years. The GTI has long become a car with cult appeal as well as an independent brand. Milestone GTI anniversaries have always been celebrated with exclusive special models. Volkswagen steps up its use of plug-in hybrid technology Posted: 11 May 2011 07:59 AM PDT At the Vienna Motor Symposium, the Chairman of the Volkswagen Group, Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, announced that the Volkswagen Group will be going into production with a range of important models with plug-in hybrid technology starting in 2013/14. “The electric car will impact the future of individual mobility in crucial ways – and Volkswagen is spearheading this technology. Over the mid-term, the plug-in hybrid offers great potential, because it combines the best of two worlds in one vehicle,” said Winterkorn. The plug-in hybrid offers precisely what many customers expect: unlimited internal combustion engine performance combined with attractive electric mobility ranges in everyday driving. Moreover, Winterkorn noted that there are no limitations to the vehicle’s speed, climbing or towing abilities. He also stated that plug-in technology has excellent potential for reducing CO2 emissions. “Electric mobility is the task of the century for the automotive industry and the European industrial community as a whole. Manufacturers, suppliers, energy providers, scientists and politicians – everyone must step up to the plate here,” said the Volkswagen chairman. Winterkorn spoke in support of more targeted research funding, especially in the field of electro-chemistry for battery technology. At the Vienna Motor Symposium Volkswagen also showcased two new engines which will be available shortly: the 1.4 l TSI Motor E 85 and the new 2.0l TDI, which already fulfills stringent BIN5/ULEV emission laws in the USA. Volkswagen’s advanced development of its twincharged 1.4 l TSI with 118 kW for use with E 85 ethanol fuel, illustrates how the company is extending its line-up of eco-friendly engines and further contributing towards reducing CO2 emissions in internal combustion engines. In the Passat saloon, the combination of the new TSI with a 7-speed dual clutch transmission (DSG) in E 85 operation yields a fuel consumption value of 8.8 litres per 100 km in the NEDC driving cycle, which is equivalent to 144g CO2/km. This represents a 7% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to an engine operated with Super petrol fuel. The engine is slated for use in the Passat and Passat CC, initially in Sweden and Finland, where E 85 fuel has been widely available for many years now. Unlike the European automotive market, the share of passenger cars with diesel engines is still quite small in the USA. In recent years, just a few carmakers – notably Volkswagen and Audi – have been able to sell appreciable volumes of vehicles with diesel engines. By introducing the new 2.0 l TDI, the Volkswagen Group is reaffirming its conviction that diesel engines still have great potential in passenger cars in the USA. The 2nd generation 2.0 l TDI, familiar from Europe, was modified and further engineered for the new Passat to be produced in Chattanooga exclusively for the North American market. To satisfy BIN5/ULEV emission regulations in the USA, it was necessary to reduce the engine’s raw emissions and install an SCR (selective catalytic reduction) emissions control system. The 2.0 l TDI produces 103 kW (140 PS) and has 320 Nm of torque. It accelerates the Passat from 0 to 60 mph in 9.3 seconds and has an electronically limited top speed of 113 mph. The car’s diesel fuel economy is 35 mpg (miles per gallon), which is equivalent to about 6.7 litres per 100 km. Related posts: |

First SKODA Hispano Suiza delivered 85 years ago Posted: 11 May 2011 07:52 AM PDT It was exactly 85 years ago, that a vehicle with the SKODA logo of the winged arrow rolled off the assembly line for the first time. The luxury sedan SKODA Hispano Suiza was the first car with the distinctive trademark of the Czech manufacturer. On May 10th, 1926, the very first vehicle was delivered to the president of Czechoslovakia, TomaS Garrigue Masaryk. Until 1929, only a total of 100 units of the luxury sedan were built.
The industrial manufacturer from Pilsen had already bought the license for the production of luxury sedans from the originally Spanish company Hispano-Suiza in 1924 – i.e. even before the merger with the automobile factory of Laurin & Klement. That explains the additional name in the vehicle designation. In the spring of 1925, production of the vehicle was started; in May of 1926, the first vehicle was finished. The design had been created by the leading coachbuilders at the time, Messrs. Brozik & Jech, and later by Messrs. Laurin & Klement as well. The manufacture was still far away from today’s series production. Every single SKODA Hispano Suiza 25/100 PS was custom-built in individual production according to the customer’s wishes. Therefore, each car was unique. Depending on the equipment, the vehicle weighed up to 2,700 kilograms. It was able to reach a top speed of 140 km/h. Among other people, customers and owners included the prime minister at the time, Antonin Svehla, as well as important industrial leaders and aristocrats of Czechoslovakia and foreign buyers. The luxury equipment corresponded to the price level set for the SKODA Hispano Suiza. The base price started at 190,000 crowns and was several times higher than the price of other vehicles available on the market. Depending on the equipment, the price could rise to a quarter of a million crowns. The office of the president even paid 280,000 crowns for the first model. In comparison, the small SKODA 422 cost 38,000 crowns, the large sedan SKODA 860 about 120,000 crowns. The accompanying information by the manufacturer stated: “The SKODA Hispano Suiza is a luxury car designed by a brilliant engineer who put his stamp on the smallest details and manufactured with the utmost care and fine materials.” - Skoda Auto Related posts: |
