VW Passat’s U.S. problems show world cars don’t work

Volkswagen says the poor U.S. track record of its Passat is stark proof that a one-world, one-car approach doesn’t get the job done.

VW has tried for years to carve out a respectable piece of the important U.S. mid-sized sedan market with the German-built Passat. But VW’s U.S. dealers in 2010 sold fewer than 13,000 Passat sedans and wagons combined. By comparison, VW in 2010 sold more than 66,000 Passats just in Germany, and more than 170,000 across Europe.

It works there. It hasn’t worked here. Why?

The car was failing for a number of reasons. The first was price. The euro is strong against the dollar these days. By the time the Passat was built in Emden, Germany, with German labor costs and a euro currency base for its components, and then shipped to North America, its base sticker price was $27,945, including shipping. That’s $7,000 higher than a base-model Toyota Camry.

The new U.S. Passat will have a base price of $20,765, including shipping.

The Passat is slightly smaller and less roomy inside than other mid-sized cars, including the Camry and the Hyundai Sonata. The new Passat is now on a 110.4-inch wheelbase, with 42.4 inches of front seat legroom, exceeding the Camry in both categories.

In Europe, the Passat’s base engine will deliver 120 hp. In North America, it’s 170 hp.

Scirocco GT24-CNG finishes 27th overall at the 2011 Nurburgring 24 Hour

With the Golf24 gaining much of the attention over the weekend, the two Scirocco GT24-CNG’s were quietly doing their thing. Leading up, testing and qualifying sessions went very well. The no117, driven by Nasser Al-Attiyah, Carlos Sainz and Giniel de Villiers and Klaus Niedzwiedz started 61st. The no116 had Vanina Ickx, Bernd Ostmann, Peter Wyss and Klaus Niedzwiedz (driving two cars) at the wheel and 66th on grid. They finished 27th and 46th respectively.

In 2009, we saw the premiere of the GT24-CNG engine at the 24 Hour. VW went on to a 1-2 in the AT class and a 17th overall. In 2010, VW entered 3 of them, going on to a 1-2-3 win in the AT class. All three finished in the Top 20.

Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen’s crew experienced an almost equal measure of success and disappointment at the 39th 24-Hour Race at the Nurburgring. The two blue biogas Scirocco GT24-CNG cars repeated last year’s success by coming first and second in their category. In addition to winning in their category, the three Dakar Rally winners Carlos Sainz, Nasser Al-Attiyah and Giniel de Villiers and the touring car legend Klaus Niedzwiedz also finished in a good 27th place overall in their 330 hp Scirocco.

Carlos Sainz, Scirocco GT24-CNG, (#117, 27th)

“We can be very happy with having won in our category once again. It’s always a great feeling to see the checkered flag after such a difficult race. After my third race here on the Nordschleife, we have finally become friends. I had a soft spot for the track all along, but now it’s more of a case of love that is also reciprocated.”

Klaus Niedzwiedz, Scirocco GT24-CNG (#116, 46th)

“The Scirocco cars drove precisely and were as reliable as clockwork – almost as if Wolfsburg was actually in Switzerland. Being lucky enough to be driving both of the cars, I sometimes found myself in a duel with my own vehicle – something I’ve never experienced before in all these years. In all, this race was definitely one of the most challenging ever for me. The mix of top cars and slower vehicles in particular called for high levels of concentration from everyone involved.”

Two new Audi R18 TDI cars for Imola ILMC

Audi R18 TDI Ingolstadt

Coming off a three weekend win streak, can Audi make it four in a row? From the incredible Le Mans 24 Hour win, DTM Lausitzring win and a 1-2-3 podium sweep yesterday at the Nurburgring 24 Hour. Both Timo Bernhard and Marcel Fassler were on the podium as well and will race at Imola.

With two cars demolished at Le Mans and the winning no2 car going on to live it up, Audi had to build two new ones, designated as R18-103 and R18-107.

Only three weeks after the triumph at the Le Mans 24 Hours the next endurance test is on the agenda for the Audi R18 TDI. The 6-hour race at Imola, Italy, is about scoring important points in the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup (ILMC) – the racing series that in 2012 will evolve into the FIA World Endurance Championship.

  • Fourth round of the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup in Italy
  • Audi Sport Team Joest with two new race cars
  • New aerodynamics package for more downforce

Audi Sport Team Joest did not have a lot of time to celebrate the tenth Le Mans victory. Since Audi wants to use the winning car designated as number “2” for exhibitions and demo drives as many as two new race cars (R18-103 and R18-107) had to be built up after the huge accidents of Allan McNish and Mike Rockenfeller. In addition, an aerodynamics package designed for higher downforce that will be used for the first time at Imola was tested in the week after the Lausitzring DTM race.

Audi R18 TDI Ingolstadt

What has remained unchanged is the message featured on the two silver-colored R18 TDI cars. Audi Sport Team Joest advertises the company’s ultra-lightweight technology which proved its viability at Le Mans in a twofold sense. Not least thanks to the weight optimization the R18 TDI was the fastest vehicle at Le Mans. And as the two heavy accidents haven proven, ultra-lightweight technology and high passive safety do not contradict each other.

Only ten days after his accident at Le Mans Allan McNish was thus able to participate in a test with the R18 TDI. At Imola the Scotsman will share the cockpit of car number “2” (yellow color markings) with Le Mans record winner Tom Kristensen who like McNish and test driver Marco Bonanomi tested as well.

At the wheel of car number “1” (red color markings) Timo Bernhard and Marcel Fassler will form a driver pairing for the first time. Kristensen/McNish and Bernhard/Fassler are also planned to contest the other three ILMC races at Silverstone, Road Atlanta and Zhuhai.

Whereas Bernhard, Fassler and McNish have raced at Imola before Tom Kristensen has familiarized himself with the Italian race track in a simulator. Consequently, all four drivers know what is in store for them: a race at which the brakes will play an important part and where the situation will be pretty tight on the track as about 50 vehicles will be running at the event.

Audi Sport Team Joest will travel to Italy as the leader of the team standings. In the manufacturers classification Audi is ranking 34 points behind Peugeot in second place.

The Imola 6 Hours will start at 1200 hrs on Sunday, July 3. Audi offers all sports car fans the possibility to watch the entire race live on the internet. In addition to the race pictures, onboard footage and telemetry data will be available at www.audi-microsites.com/lemans. On Facebook and Twitter channels of Audi Sport the five-time Le Mans winner Emanuele Pirro will provide current background information.
