Porsche Riley DP 1:43

This is a limited edition of only 300 models. Our 2011 Bid for Rolex 24 was a mixture of euphoria and disappointment. Joerg Bergmeister set a new DP record of 1:40.099 at the Daytona International Speedway, putting the No. 45 Flying Lizard Porsche-Powered DP on the overall pole for race. The No. 45 Daytona Prototype was powered by a Porsche Motorsport-prepared, 911-based flat-6 engine.

After an incident put the car off track in hour four, the team fought to regain positions. Unfortunately, the car retired due to a small engine fire in hour 23 with 90 minutes left in the race. The No. 45 was eleventh (overall and in class) at the time of retirement.

The livery design was beautiful and so well received, that despite the unfortunate end, we had to release a replica. This model is manufactured by Spark/Minimax and is exclusive to Flying Lizard. The model is crafted in the same manner that has made Spark the premiere model maker, second to none. The packaging includes Spark’s standard acrylic case and the custom Flying Lizard-branded outer slip cover.

The model is attached to a black MDF base (5.5 inches by 2.875 inches), that is printed with “J. Bergmeister – P. Long – S. Neiman and J. van Overbeek” along one edge with accompanying printed driver signatures. “Flying Lizard No. 45 – Porsche-powered Riley DP, 2011 Rolex 24 At Daytona – Overall Pole Winner and Fastest Race Lap” is printed along the opposite edge. This car is approximately 4 inches x 2 inches and 1.25 inches tall.

FIA GT3 Slovakia Ring circuit

After four events in Portugal, Great Britain, Spain and France supporting the GT1 World Championship, the FIA GT3 European Championship now heads to a new country and a new challenge for the next two one-hour races, when it will be the headline series at the Admiral GT3 Racing Weekend in Slovakia this weekend (19-21 August 2011).

It will be the first time that the FIA GT3 European Championship has raced at the new Slovakia Ring circuit, although the championship has visited Brno in the neighboring Czech Republic twice before (2007 and 2010).

The 5.9km Slovakia Ring circuit, which is located 40km from Bratislava, was opened in 2008. As well as the FIA GT3 European Championship the circuit will also host rounds of the Central European Zone Championship, the Radical European Cup and Formula D2 and D3 this weekend.

FIA GT3 Paul Richard

Championship leaders Francesco Castellacci and Federico Leo (79 points) (nr50 AF Corse Ferrari 458 Italia) hold a slender 4-point advantage over Enzo Ide and Greg Franchi (75 points) (nr33 Belgian Audi Club Team WRT Audi R8), with Edward Sandstrom and Abdulaziz Al Faisal (73 points) (nr6 Need for Speed Team Schubert BMW Z4) just 2 points behind the Audi pairing. With 100 points on offer over the next two events, the championship is still wide open.

In the Team Championship, it is an all-BMW Z4 affair at the top of the table with Need for Speed Team Schubert (126 points) holding a 5-point lead over Faster Racing by DB Motorsport (121 points). However, AF Corse (97 points), Belgian Audi Club Team WRT (88 points) and Graff Racing (85 points) are all within striking distance of the leaders and it could all change once again this weekend in Slovakia.

Slovakia is represented by four drivers for the first ever FIA GT3 event in their country with Anton Kiaba and Stefan Rosina racing with Reiter Engineering, taking the wheel of the nr25 Lamborghini Gallardo LP600. Jirko Malcharek will join French driver Didier Andre in the nr32 Belgian Audi Club Team WRT Audi R8, while Filip Sladecka will race with Patrick Hirsch in the nr45 HEICO Motorsport Mercedes Benz SLS AMG.

The Czech Republic is also well represented this weekend, with the Gravity Charouz Racing team hoping for success with their pair of Mercedes-Benz SLS AMGs on their neighbour’s premier race circuit. Jarek Janis will once again join Russian Leo Machitski in the nr11 car, while the nr12 Mercedes is an all-Czech line up with Jan Stovicek and Jakub Knoll sharing the driving duties.

Track action begins on Friday 19th August with Free Practice, while Qualifying and Round 9 of the 2011 FIA GT3 European Championship take place on Saturday 20th at 09:30 and 14:45 (local time) respectively. Round 10 takes place on Sunday 21st August and is due to start at 11:15.

Dramatic win for TRG, Bertheau and Pumpelly at Watkins Glen

TRG Watkins Glen

Proving that hard work and great pit strategy pays off, TRG moved up through the pack this weekend for a huge win at the Grand-Am Rolex Series Watkins Glen 200. Starting from the 18th position, TRG’s No. 67 Sargent & Lundy Porsche GT3 Cup car piloted by Steve Bertheau and Spencer Pumpelly secured one of the Series’ most dramatic GT wins of the season.

With a qualifying session cut short due to on-track incidents and limited practice time, the team battled several obstacles to claim victory in the fastest paced Grand-Am race of all time.

Bertheau, winnner at the Daytona 24 earlier this year, was only able to get one flyer in during qualifying but managed to put down one of his best laps of the weekend. Meanwhile, TRG’s sister car, the No. 66 Racer’s Roast/Fox River Coffee/TRG Porsche GT3 was qualified by driver Duncan Ende, who handled marvelously a car that was a bit off its sister’s car pace.

TRG Watkins Glen

“We knew we had some work to do on this one,” said TRG team owner/CEO Kevin Buckler. “We didn’t qualify as well as we had wanted, and definitely had our hands full with an ill-handling 66. Duncan is a pro and played the cards out the best he could. We managed the strategy to death and knew we had a real shot early on with 67. If there’s a group of guys who can overcome adversity and get the job done at the end of the day, it’s our guys, and I am really proud of them today.”

The team seized the opportunity of a caution early to get all of its pit stop duties out of the way for the No. 67. This strategy paid dividends in the end. Bertheau nailed his performance and handed the car off to Pumpelly, the seasoned veteran. Pumpelly put on an outstanding drive, moving into the lead in the last 10 minutes then masterfully saved fuel to bring it home to the checker for his third professional sportscar win in a row.

“Strategy, a great crew and a fantastic co-driver, that’s what makes you win,” said Bertheau. “Kevin and Greg [Jones] were managing our time and fuel strategy from the drop of the green.”

The No. 66 Racer’s Roast/Fox River Coffee/TRG Porsche GT3 started 15th but thanks to Ende’s great start and consistent lap times continued to battle within the pack all day long.
