Auto Union Silver Arrows, here the reconstruction of the 1936 Type C at the Goodwood Festival of Speed

It's full throttle for Audi Tradition as the 2012 season gets under way. Car enthusiasts can see its historic vehicles at more than 25 events throughout Europe during the year. In Monaco, legendary Formula 1 driver Jacky Ickx will be at the controls personally to drive the Auto Union Type D Silver Arrow dating from 1938 through the Principality. Nor would the list of events be complete without the Mille Miglia. And this year's Audi Tradition display at the "Techno Classica" in Essen, the world's largest historic car show, is twice the size of last year's: valuable vehicles from the company's history will be seen on more than 700 square metres of floor space.

  • For your diary: more than 25 events this year
  • With Jacky Ickx at the Grand Prix Historique in Monaco
  • A big presence at the "Techno Classica", the world's largest historic car show

The historic car world will soon be turning its attention to Essen in the Ruhr area of Germany for the 24th time in succession. Over 180,000 experts and historic car enthusiasts are expected to visit the "Techno Classica" there from March 21 to 25. Audi Tradition has adopted "hillclimb races" as its motto, and will be displaying notably successful cars from four generations. Among the most outstanding exhibits will be the Auto Union Type C driven by the unforgettable Bernd Rosemeyer, the Audi Type C "Alpine Winner" that was victorious in the International Austrian Alpine Rally three times in succession from 1912 to 1914, and the NSU 1300 TT, with which Siegfried Spiess became German GT Hillclimb Champion in all classes in 1965. A special highlight will be the Audi Sport quattro S1 in which living-legend rally driver Walter Rohrl hurtled to the top of Pike's Peak in record time 25 years ago. Other classic cars from Audi Tradition will be on show too, as well as motorcycles that played a part in the history of DKW and NSU.

City tour at the Mille Miglia: through the centre of Florence in a DKW F91

It will be possible to admire the Auto Union Silver Arrows in action no fewer than five times this year. Jacky Ickx leads off in the Auto Union Type D at the Grand Prix Historique in Monaco (May 11 to 13). After that it's off to the motherland of motor sport: from June 29 to July 1 more than 160,000 enthusiasts will make their way to the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Audi Tradition will also be represented at this year's Goodwood Revival (September 14 to 16). But before that a trip to Austria is scheduled: the 2012 Ennstal Classic is being held from July 11 to 14. The next date to note is July 28, when the "24 Heures de Francorchamps" is being run. The Auto Union Type C that won the Belgian Grand Prix here in 1937 will have the honor of opening the race.

The summer won't be far off when five DKW models from the 1950s make their way to Brescia, Italy in mid-May. From May 18 to 20, the cars' engines will warm to their task when the world-famous Mille Miglia is held. Another sporting highlight is the Kitzbuhl Alpine Rally (May 30 to June 2). Audi Tradition first tackled the Austrian mountains here last year, and will be present this time with a DKW GT Malzoni, an NSU TT and an Audi 100 Coupé.

Bodensee Klassik: an Audi 100 Coupe S is also taking part on behalf of Audi Tradition

The heritage department of AUDI AG will be criss-crossing Germany this year, with plans to attend more than 15 events. The calendar lists such well-established events as the Donau Classic in Ingolstadt (June 21 to 23), the Heidelberg Historic (July 12 to 14), the Classic Days Schloss Dyck (August 3 to 5) and the Sachsen Classic (August 16 to 18) – which is held in the region from which the Audi brand originated. Audi Tradition is participating for the first time in the Bodensee Klassik at Lake Constance from May 3 to 5 with five modern classic vehicles. Other highlights include the international NSU Meet in Neckarsulm (June 7 to 10), the Schottenring Classic Grand Prix for motorcycles (August 18 to 19) and the Schloss Bensberg Klassik from September 7 – 9.

The Gran Premio Nuvolari, the second highlight of the season in "Bella Italia" (September 21 – 23), traditionally marks the end of the season for Audi Tradition.

Audi Team Phoenix Racing ahead of the Bathurst 12 Hours

2012 Bathurst 12 Hours

As we head into the final days leading up to the Bathurst 12 Hours, Team Phoenix gives us some thoughts on the weekend. It may be Team Phoenix Racing’s first time at the Bathurst 12 Hours but they are stacked. Christer Jons, Darryl O’Young and Christopher Mies will share the no1 Audi R8 LMS while Mark Eddy, Craig Lowndes and Warren Luff will drive the no2 Audi R8 LMS. Sounds familiar, right? Out of the six, only Jons was not in one of last years Team Joest R8′s that finished 1-2.

Ernst Moser (Team Director Phoenix Racing)

Our team has never run in Australia before. In addition, February as the first month of racing is very early as we normally just test at this time of year. Obviously, such a special track as Bathurst suggests a comparison with the Nurburgring Nordschleife. Bathurst has high vertical differences. The circuit with its barriers close to the track is very difficult to drive. Since the Audi R8 LMS celebrated a one-two result last year it is only natural that there are certain expectations this year. Mercedes and Ferrari will be tough rivals for us. We’ve got to be sure not to make any mistakes. quattro GmbH with its experiences from last year helped us a great deal to prepare for the event. Five of the six drivers know the track and as a team we’re intimately familiar with the Audi R8 LMS and are also at home in endurance racing. We’re reinforced by four employees from Australia who are joining our team via Mark Eddy. I’m very excited. It remains to be seen which Michelin tire compounds we’ll be allowed to use.

2012 Bathurst 12 Hour, Audi R8 LMS, Phoenix Racing

Facts and quotes by the Audi drivers

Mark Eddy (51/AUS), Audi R8 LMS #2

  • Won the Australian GT Championship in the Audi R8 LMS last year
  • Started from pole position at Bathurst in 2011
  • Is sharing the cockpit in this year’s Australian GT Championship with Warren Luff

Last year we had a nice battle between the two Audi R8 LMS. It was an exciting race all the way to the end. The car was very reliable and fast. It felt good on a wet and dry track and was easy to drive! We three Australians would now like to finish one place farther in front after the close outcome last year. But this year the competition with the international teams and even more makes in the field is even tougher.

Christer Jons (24/D), Audi R8 LMS #1

  • Has known the Audi R8 LMS since 2010
  • Is the only one of the six drivers to have never competed at Bathurst before
  • Is arriving a week earlier in order to get used to the climate and time zone

I’m proud to be driving an Audi with Phoenix on the other side of the world! I don’t know Bathurst in real terms yet. But I’m familiar with the track from the PlayStation. Ever since my first virtual laps on this track I’ve been thrilled with Bathurst. Now the time has come for me to actually compete in the Audi R8 LMS, my absolute favorite. A dream is coming true! After three years the Audi R8 LMS is an advanced and stable car. The cornering dynamics and powerful brakes in particular will give us advantages on this winding track. I’m very excited about Australia. Our preparations in terms of track knowledge using onboard videos and our fitness training are running at full stretch. Hopefully we’ll manage to defend the title on my first run at this event.

Craig Lowndes (37/AUS), Audi R8 LMS #2

  • Drove the fastest race lap at Bathurst last year
  • Started from the front position last year

I’m happy to be returning to Bathurst with an Audi and fighting for victory again. The battle with our team-mates a year ago was fantastic. Our driver team only missed victory by a very small margin. It’ll be great to work with Warren and Mark again. The fact that we’ve driven together before is a great help. Perhaps that’ll put us ahead of the competition a bit. I’m also looking forward to the Audi R8 LMS. The car is wonderful. On a track like Bathurst, it seems like it’s exactly made for the winding sections up on the hill. The R8 LMS is a good-natured car. It allows you to run your stints in a gentle and consistent way. The competition will even be a lot tougher this year. But it’s not a sprint. You’ve got be in contention at the end. I’m expecting good chances for the three of us being able to make that happen.

Warren Luff (35/AUS), Audi R8 LMS #2

  • Achieved the best time in qualifying last year
  • Contested a race on the Nurburgring in the R8 LMS in May of 2011

This year the Bathurst 12 Hours will be a much tougher battle than last year. I’m expecting us to have particularly strong rivals in the Ferrari 458 and the Mercedes SLS and a thrilling fight all the way to the end. But I expect our strongest opponents to be in our own team again. And I’m particularly looking forward to the updated version of the Audi R8 LMS. I’m excited to see how it’ll feel at Bathurst.

Christopher Mies (22/D), Audi R8 LMS #1

  • As 2009 FIA GT European Champion was among the first title winners in the Audi R8 LMS
  • Was already driving for Ernst Moser’s team back then
  • Is returning to Bathurst as last year’s winner

After the successful race last year I’m happy to be able to run again. Bathurst is always worth a visit, the country and the track are unique. The Audi was the strongest car in the field last year. quattro GmbH has continued to develop it during the season. I believe that with the Audi R8 LMS and Team Phoenix Racing we’re the strongest pairing. Yet our rivals should not be underrated. The competition is becoming bigger and tougher. Our strongest opponents will likely come from our own ranks though – our Australian team-mates. Last year, they finished barely a second behind us. So that means we’ve got to give everything throughout the 12 hours.

Darryl O’Young (31/HK), Audi R8 LMS #1

  • After runs at Bathurst, the Nurburgring and Sepang has long become an expert in the Audi R8 LMS
  • Is returning to Bathurst as last year’s winner
  • Was nominated for the Hong Kong Sports Star Awards in January 2012

Last year we had a sensational race in the battle with our Australian team-mates. But this year we’ll have additional competitors with various makes. The Audi R8 LMS is particularly strong on the fast sections on the hill and in the braking zones. The car can display its strengths really well on this circuit. The R8 LMS is pleasant to drive, which helps on a challenging track like Mount Panorama. I met our new team-mate Christer Jons at the Audi Sport Finale in Germany in 2011. The chemistry between us three drivers was great from the outset. And I’m looking forward to Phoenix Racing. I once drove for the squad in the DTM. We’ve got all the key elements to be in contention for victory again.

In its quest to extend the momentum generated in the 2011 American Le Mans Series, Team Falken Tire has taken delivery of a brand new 2012 Porsche GT3 RSR chassis. The car was sent to Derrick Walker’s race shop in Indianapolis in preparation for the car’s assault on the demanding GT class and will make its season debut at the 12 Hours of Sebring on March 17.

Drivers Wolf Henzler and Bryan Sellers will return to pilot the car, which is one of only four new race-designated Porsches in the U.S. The veteran duo secured two wins for Team Falken during last year, at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and on the streets of Baltimore.

“The new chassis makes us again one of the few teams in the world to have one of these incredibly sophisticated race cars, and we fully intend to take advantage on what we learned last season as we aggressively push ahead,” stated Andrew Hoit, Falken Vice President of Marketing. “We have shown the competition and our customers the versatility of our Falken Azenis products by winning on both wet and dry track surfaces, and demonstrated that Falken means business when it comes to sports car racing. We’ll prove it again this year and continue to move forward in the rankings.”

The top model of Porsche Motorsport’s customer racing vehicles is termed “a technically mature” race car, according to Porsche officials. However, the 2012 GT3 RSR features extensive modifications, including flared front- and rear-wheel arches as well as new intakes on the sides to provide better air flow to the engine.

“The car performed extremely well during the Winter Test,” declared veteran road racer Sellers, who begins his fourth year as a Falken team driver. He will again partner with Porsche Works driver Henzler and Team Manager Walker, who starts his second year as head of the race program.

“Clearly, expectations run high throughout the team, based on our strong showing last year and fourth place finish in the GT points standings,” added Nick Fousekis, Falken Director of Motorsports and Consumer Events. “Team Falken was successful in 2011 as a result of brilliant race strategy by Derrick and the tremendous driving efforts of Wolf and Brian, and we fully intend to leverage that teamwork with this new race car as we commence our third full season of race competition.”

In addition, Falken will vigorously support its motorsports involvement with numerous marketing strategies, said Hoit. “Last year, Falken pioneered a series of unique contests and customer activations, and we will continue such innovative strategies as we prepare another sweepstakes and other programs this year.”

Falken Azenis race slicks will again be used on the Porsche, updated through rigid research and development during the off-season. Also joining Team Falken this year will be HPI Racing, manufacturer of highly sophisticated radio-controlled (RC) products.

With an increase in power up to 1,200 HP, the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse has entered a new dimension of open-top driving. Optically aligned to the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, which holds the current world speed record of 431 km/h, the Vitesse also impresses with its dynamic driving characteristics.

Bugatti’s engineers have developed the current Grand Sport, with its 1,001 HP and 1,250 Nm, into an even more powerful vehicle. The Vitesse’s maximum torque is now an impressive 1,500 Nm. The increased power of the new roadster’s 16-cylinder engine is made possible by the four enlarged turbochargers and intercoolers. The chassis has also been modified to support the power increase. The Vitesse therefore also ensures the supreme range of excellent features one would expect of a Bugatti super sports car, from precise driving dynamics to extraordinary acceleration and braking.

“The rapid success of the Super Sport convinced us to increase the performance of the Bugatti roadster. Once again our engineers worked hard to demonstrate that Bugatti is able to constantly redefine the boundaries of what is technically feasible,” reveals Bugatti President Wolfgang Durheimer. “We gave our all to transfer the achievements of the Super Sport over to the Grand Sport, thereby turning open-top driving itself into an extraordinary experience at high speed.”
