Rum Bum Racing hoping for points and podium with Porsche

After taking seven top-five finishes on the way to placing third in the 2011 GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge championship, Rum Bum Racing kicked off the 2012 season with another stout start and a fifth place finish with drivers Matt Plumb and Nick Longhi at Daytona International Speedway.

As the Rum Bum Racing team returns for Round 2 at Barber Motorsports Park, located outside of Birmingham, Alabama, the team will look for a strong debut with Porsche power.

"We started on the right foot with a solid run in Daytona, and now we just want to learn this car, get up to speed quickly, put ourselves in position to make up some ground in the championship, and get our momentum going," offered Plumb. "With some short straights, constant braking zones, and a lot of focus on getting good exits to every corner…so Barber is a busy track, with no place to take a break. And with over 70 cars in the race, it's going to likely be crazy out there. Hopefully we can stay out of trouble, learn a lot about this Porsche, and come out of the weekend with a strong result."

The move to the Porsche platform will see the team target more speed and points as Rum Bum Racing keeps an eye toward winning the championship, the team's main goal.

"Our overall objective is to score as many points as possible in every single race and to keep our focus on the championship," said Plumb. "We want to go out and win every race, but we know that with the competition as intense as it is, we have to focus on just getting everything out of each weekend that we can if we aren't on top. It's going to be a very competitive year and earning points is key. We know that Joe (Varde) is going to make the right calls on the pit box and the Rum Bum guys keep delivering great pit stops, so hopefully we can just keep building on what we've started with a good result this weekend."

Despite always running well at the track, Barber has not always been lucky for the Rum Bum squad. Longhi had a great qualifying effort in last year's Barber 200 event to put the No. 13 machine outside the second row for the start. Rum Bum Racing ran among the top-10 throughout most of the race, but fell victim to some unlucky yellow flag timing which saw the team finish seventh. The team hopes to turn their luck around this weekend with a trip to the podium at the 2.3-mile Alabama road course.

The team will be jumping headlong into the Porsche-related activities this weekend, participating in a reception at Tom Williams Porsche near the track, and will also be hosting a tech talk and transporter tour for some members of the local Porsche Club of America during the weekend.
