Posted: 13 Jul 2012 06:35 PM PDT In May this year it was announced that Alfa Romeo and Mazda will cooperate to produce the next Spider. The news certainly didn’t leave indifferent Alfisti hardened. On the one hand means that the next heir of the legendary Duet might have the rear wheel drive (borrowed from the MX5). On the other hand, however, the idea that under an Alfa Romeo could be Japanese technology could distort the nose. Pace of skeptics, however, the agreement is progressing as expected. The next generation of Mazda MX5 is waiting for 2014 and, barring unforeseen circumstances, the Biscione’s cousin would debut the following year. Despite the collaboration between the two marks, however, personality and style of two spider will be profoundly different. According to Car and Driver tested the two seats he will dust off their Italian name of Duet and it will be driven by 1,750 turbo four-cylinder petrol already present on Juliet. The power will be around 250 horses, as we will see on the Alfa Romeo 4 c of upcoming release. In combination with the motor you can choose the six-speed manual transmission or the automatic dual-clutch with paddles behind the wheel. According to some indiscretions seems that Alfa Romeo is trying to convince Mazda to use the dual-clutch gearbox also on next MX5, although the Japanese brand has so far been rather reluctant to adopt that type of transmission. The frame is made of high tensile steel, low weight, following the SkyActive technology that debuted on CX5 crossover. Aluminium instead will be used for most suspension components. For the moment they are only rumors, but are already sufficient to be dreaming all fans. However, for some time, even before the announced partnership with Mazda, you know that Alfa Romeo is pursuing the development of a new spider. In these pictures you can see the prototype Pininfarina 2uettottanta, introduced in 2010, and we like to think that may offer clues to the designer for the Duet of the future. |
