Just over a year ago, ABT Sportsline presented the “Speedle” Beetle concept. Volkswagen unveiled the Beetle TDI Clean Diesel at the Chicago Auto Show in February and would be available in the U.S in August. ABT Sportsline has now tackled the Beetle TDI, added 30hp and drops the 0-62mph to 8.8sec.

“It is really the right engine for this car,“ says Hans-Jürgen Abt, CEO of ABT Sportsline. “Particularly people who use their car quite a lot will really value how economical but also torquey it is,“ adds Abt. It goes without saying that the upgrade is to make the engine not only stronger and more fun to use but it also stays environmentally friendly and economically efficient. ABT POWER lends the diesel Beetle 170 hp (standard: 140 hp) or 125 kW (standard: 103 kW), a very becoming uprating indeed. Torque has also been increased from 320 to 370 newton meter. The ABT diesel Beetle needs 8.8 seconds to go from zero to 100 km/h (standard: 9.4 s) and has more torque at any rate.

Both upgrades ABT Sportsline is now offering for the new Beetle are fully in line with the design package that has been developed for this visually so very striking car: The headlight covers make the Beetle appear fiercer and more aggressive.

Tail lamp covers and the license plate insert lend the rear end an individual touch. The front spoiler and rear skirt set with its two oval exhausts signal power and self-confidence.

If you want your Beetle to look even smarter, you can opt for the carbon-look deco set, which sort of transfers the Herbie tradition into the year 2012. ABT suspension springs make for ideal road-holding capabilities.

The larger ABT brake kit for the front axle with its black painted calipers is really powerful. For an ideal “finish”, ABT Sportsline recommends the DR and CR wheel designs in 18 to 20 inches.

Timo Bernhard is back and ready for the 6h ADAC Ruhr-Pokal-Rennen

We’re happy to announce that Porsche works driver Timo Bernhard returns to the race track after more than four months of recuperation following an injury. This coming Saturday, Bernhard competes for Manthey-Racing in a Porsche 911 GT3 R with Porsche factory pilot Romain Dumas as well as Manthey driver Jochen Krumbach at the season highlight of the Nurburgring Long Distance Championship.

The six-hour race is contested on the combination of the Grand Prix circuit of the Nurburgring and the Nordschleife. As the innocent victim of a crash during an Audi test drive in Sebring in March this year, Timo Bernhard sustained multiple injuries involving the cervical spine.

“After the accident I concentrated totally on my recovery and rehabilitation from mid-April,” says Timo Bernhard. “Early in July my injuries were completely healed and I could embark on training specifically for motorsport. My doctors, my coach and I have worked hard and taken the right steps at the right time. I now feel ready to climb back into the cockpit. I’m as fit and strong as before the accident. Although I’ve contested many races all over the world throughout my career, I’ve rarely looked forward to driving out of the pit lane as much as I am right now.”

Volkswagen and Porsche finalize creation of Integrated Automotive Group

The creation of the Integrated Automotive Group between Volkswagen and Porsche was finalized on August 1 as planned. “The path is now finally clear for a bright future together. Even closer cooperation will enable us to significantly strengthen Volkswagen and Porsche, and further expand the Group’s product portfolio with fascinating new vehicles”, said Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft’s Board of Management, in Wolfsburg on Wednesday.

Under the structure developed jointly by Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft and Porsche Automobil Holding SE (Porsche SE), Porsche SE contributed its indirect 50.1 percent holding in Porsche AG to Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft effective August 1, 2012. Volkswagen thus holds 100 percent of the shares of Porsche AG via an intermediate holding company. The cash and share consideration of about €4.49 billion is based on the equity value of €3.88 billion for the remaining shares of Porsche AG set out in the Comprehensive Agreement entered into in 2009, plus a number of adjustment items. Among other things, Porsche SE will be remunerated for dividend payments from its indirect stake in Porsche AG that it would have received, as well as for half of the present value of the net synergies realizable as a result of the accelerated integration, which amount to a total of approximately €320 million.

The accelerated integration of Porsche AG into the Volkswagen Group allows the implementation of Volkswagen AG’s and Porsche AG’s joint strategy more quickly. “The unique Porsche brand will continue to develop successfully under Volkswagen’s multibrand strategy and proven decentralized management structure. Porsche will retain its own identity and operational independence, just like all of the other Group brands”, said Winterkorn.

Dan Clarke claims eighth ITC win in a row at VIR

Dan Clarke claims eighth ITC win in a row at VIR

Dan Clarke’s remarkable debut season in the Intercontinental Trophy Cup Racing Series continued last weekend at Virginia International Raceway as the Indianapolis based Englishman took his eighth win in a row. Clarke, clearly buoyed by his dominant performance in the previous rounds at the challenging Road Atlanta track, took pole position, two race victories and two fastest laps in a clean sweep of the weekend.

On paper, race one’s ten second margin of victory over 2011 Champion, Tim Fox, looked very straight forward but the win was far from assured. “The race started in light rain”, Clarke explained. “The back half of the track was wet enough for rain tires but the front half was just greasy. At the start I had no idea how much grip I had to race into turn one in the damp on grooved slicks so I took it easy.” The ITC Porsche Caymans started behind the NASA sanctioned American Iron and GTS categories and it quickly became apparent that the damp track was not the only issue to worry about as traffic became a significant factor. “We were on them inside of three laps and so it was a real challenge to get around cars without hitting any of them and without Tim [Fox] getting by. I really did not want to damage the Isringhausen Motorsports car.” A calm head was required and Clarke drove with the confidence and control of a driver yet to taste defeat in 2012. “I knew I had 1.4s on Tim again so I was just patient and bided my time. By the end of the race I’d pulled out pretty big gap.”

“The conditions and the level of competition at VIR were a real test” Isringhausen explained, going on to say that “Dan’s speed, control and decision making throughout both races was truly astounding!”

Race two took place in more favorable dry conditions but the Porsche Cayman drivers were still faced with the issue of traffic. The early stages of the race delivered the closest and most exciting lead battle there has been all season as Clarke and Fox passed and re-passed through traffic. Ultimately as with every other race he has entered this season, Clarke prevailed and crossed the line 10 seconds clear of his main rival.

Car owner, Geoff Isringhusen was once again thrilled by “Speedy” Dan’s performances. “The conditions and the level of competition at VIR were a real test” Isringhausen explained, going on to say that “Dan’s speed, control and decision making throughout both races was truly astounding!”

Clarke goes for ten-in-a-row in the Intercontinental Trophy Cup Series at Mid Ohio on August 11th and 12th needing only 5 points from the last four rounds to clinch the title.
