Final Curtain: 1956 Packard Caribbean Convertible

Posted: 15 Dec 2012 04:50 AM PST

Chrises Cars - Final Curtain: 1956 Packard Caribbean Convertible

This 1956 Packard Caribbean convertible is described as a 91k-mile example that's been stored since 1965. Few Caribbean ‘verts were built in '56 — the last year of the true Packards — so they are a rare sight today and one in project condition is even rarer. Find it here on Craigslist in Plano, Texas for $26.5k.

Styling was little changed for 1956. Though the cars used a bodyshell that dated back to 1951 they looked reasonably contemporary thanks to a clever update by designer Richard Teague for 1955 that added such features as cathedral taillights and a wraparound windshield. Tri-tone paint was commonly found on Caribbeans, though the cars themselves were uncommon. Just 276 Caribbean convertibles — with a list price of $5,995 — were built for '56. This car reportedly has some rust in its lower body, but its floors and trunk are said to be solid.

The interior seems to be complete, and displays the abundant brightwork typical of ’50s luxury models. 1956 Caribbeans featured removable seat cushions with reversible covers that had leather on one side and cloth on the other. Another innovation was electronic pushbutton controls for the Ultramatic automatic transmission, though the units proved more troublesome than Chrysler’s mechanical system. This car is said to have full power equipment including power windows.

Packard's V-8 was new for ’55 and enlarged from 352 to 374 cubic inches for 1956 (Executive models still used the 352). In Caribbeans, the engine was equipped with two 4-barrel carburetors and produced 310 horsepower. This car apparently lacks the factory dual-carb setup as well as the unique air cleaner that came with it. The seller says the engine doesn't run but can be turned over by hand.

Restored Caribbeans sell for upwards of $100k so restoring this one makes sense if it isn’t terminally rusted. We’d certainly like to see it brought back to life as an example of Packard’s last attempt at a luxury flagship convertible.

Minty 1962 Land Rover Series IIa

Posted: 15 Dec 2012 04:49 AM PST

Chrises Cars - Minty 1962 Land Rover Series IIa

This 1962 Land Rover IIa is said to be the subject of a recent partial restoration costing nearly $20,000. These 109″ wheelbase models are more frequently seen as 4 door wagons, and are particularly rare relative to the more prevalent 88″ two door models. Find it for sale here on eBay in Huntington Beach, California with a $25,000 BIN.

The seller is rather vague when it comes to detail of exactly what work was included in the resto, saying only all mechanical systems were “gone through” and that the suspension was completely rebuilt using “softer” components – we’re not sure exactly what that means, but the truck does appear to be remarkably clean and is very well presented. Additionally, the shop credited for the job, Calvallo Motorports in Carlsbad, California, is well-known and highly regarded.

1962 Land Rover Series IIa Pickup For Sale Interior

In our modern world of posh, overly-styled and under-capable “off roaders”, the decidedly utilitarian, minimal aesthetic of old workhorse trucks is more appealing than ever, and few are better looking than these early Landies. This particular truck, with our-preferred-early series inboard headlamps, white top and steelies with mint green paint is an iconic representation of the model.

With an array of levers sprouting haphazardly from thefloor, multi-colored knobs and gauges scattered about everywhere one looks, acres of body-colored sheet metal, exposed ventilation system, and not a softly illuminated cupholder in sight, this is not an interior you’d bore of easily. Equipped with the 2.25 liter, 70 HP gasoline four cylinder, it should prove to be decently reliable, easy to work on and very, very slow.

1962 Land Rover Series IIa Pickup For Sale Rear

If this one proves to be as nice as it looks and sounds, our only concern would be mucking it up while using it as intended – hard, and in rough terrain. It’d be a shame to scratch or dent this clean old beast, but probably not as big a shame of it languishing as an infrequently used, on-road only Sunday Driver. Best to quickly get it out there in the mud and rocks and give it some “character” before you’d lose the nerve, then enjoy it for what is is.

Chrises Cars - 11,500 RPM Yamaha R1-Powered 1970 Mini

This 1970 Mini has a full ’03 Yamaha R1 swap, including the 998cc, 11,500 RPM, 155 HP four and sequential six speed. The seller says this thing scares him more than his 502 HP Camaro, and we like this better than a VTEC swap because it maintains the factory bonnet proportions. Find it here on eBay in Sherman Oaks, California with a $20k BIN.

This 1963 356B recently sold here on eBay for $28k, and is now re-listed 700 miles to the north here on eBay in Olympia, Washington – this time with a $32k BIN. It seemed like a steal the first time around, and still an interesting buy at four grand more, even if it is described by the seller as a “ten-footer.”

BaT Exclusive: 1967 Alfa Romeo Giulia Super

Posted: 15 Dec 2012 04:49 AM PST

Chrises Cars - BaT Exclusive: 1967 Alfa Romeo Giulia Super

This 1967 Alfa Romeo Giulia Super was purchased by the seller 25 years ago and driven about 60k miles since then. He says the car starts reliably, runs out nicely, and shifts well, and that he wouldn’t hesitate to take it for an extended drive down the coast. It does have the typical Alfa rust in the rockers and passenger floor area, but it is very complete and can be driven as-is or taken to the next level with restoration. It is available in Portland, Oregon for $6700.

1967 Alfa Romeo Giulia Super For Sale Rear

The seller says that the speedometer cable broke soon after he bought the car and he never replaced it, so he can only guess about mileage. It shows 26,000 that he suspects means 126,000 and he estimates the 50k-60k miles of use since 1987. As shown in the gallery below, it needs new rockers and the passenger floor pan replaced. One rear quarter panel is showing rust, and the seller had some of the metal replaced around the fuel tank several years ago when having the tank rebuilt at the same time.

1967 Alfa Romeo Giulia Super For Sale Front

The grill is a Ti grill in excellent condition, the windshield has a crack in one corner on the passenger side, and the rear pillar badges are missing but reproductions are available.. The car has 14 inch wheels with worn tires and the hat-type hubcaps. The seats are original; the front in good condition, the rear not so good. Door panels are in pretty good shape, and this model has our favorite of the sedan dash and steering wheel designs.

1967 Alfa Romeo Giulia Super For Sale Inteior

The seller rebuilt the motor a couple of years after he bought the car. He suspects that the blick is the original 1600, and he added a 1750 head. Three or four years ago he had the valves ground and added the European 1750 cams (048), rejetted the carbs, and added a modified Marelli Plex ignition. While the car starts reliably and runs up nice, he says it doesn't idle as well as he would like, and it could use some more sorting with the new cams. It hasn’t been driven much in the last couple of years, but the transmission shifts well and everything mechanical seems to be in good condition according to the seller.

1967 Alfa Romeo Giulia Super For Sale Engine

The seller also went through the front end probably 40,000 miles ago and installed later rotors and thus larger front brakes. It has Dave Rugh springs all the way around, and the front A-arms were re-bushed with adjustable control arms were added.

Check out the sellers Photobucket album and slide-show for many additional photos.

Chrises Cars - 29k-Mile 1990 Porsche 944S2 Cabrio

This 1990 Porsche 944S2 Cabrio is an unusual sight, with fewer than 3000 imported over three years. With under 30,000 miles, the car is barely broken in–but the seller indicates that the all-important timing belt/water pump service has been recently done.  Find it here on eBay in La Verne, California, with a $16k Buy-it-Now.
