Posted: 18 May 2011 01:15 PM PDT Wow. This is how it’s done. We’ve been wanting to cover more air-cooled news for all of you and this is a wicked start. Stephen Brooks captures the true essence of the vdub lowlife. In todays age of “baggin” everything, good ol’ classic drops are great to see on the road. Both Aaron and Simon are out of Low n’ Slow VW in the U.K and feature late 60′s model Beetle’s outfitted with some OEM goodness. They’ve kept the Beetles true age aesthetic with rust, dents and interior hazards. Classic wood slat racks on both, EMPI Raider wheels and a rare NOS hood deflector on the teal Beetle. We are huge fans of the 5-lug bubble cap wheels with white walls on the red Beetle. Thanks to our friends at German car Scene for the tip! Related posts: |
Porsche unleashes murdered out Cayman S Black Edition Posted: 18 May 2011 08:30 AM PDT Starting in July 2011, Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is bringing the mid-engine coupe to market in a special edition limited to 500 units boasting even better performance and especially lavish equipment specification. The Cayman S Black Edition is powered by a 3.4 liter six-cylinder boxer engine with power output increased by 10 hp (7 kW) to 330 hp (243 kW) at 7,400 rpm (an additional 200 rpm). The maximum torque remains unchanged at 370 Newton meters at 4,750 rpm. The extra power feeds directly through into the performance of the all black two-seater. The acceleration times from nought to 100 km/h (62 mph) are improved by a tenth of a second to 5.1 seconds with the six-gear manual transmission and to 5.0 seconds with the optional Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) respectively. A mere 4.8 seconds are required if the Launch Control is activated on the Sport Chrono package, available as an option. The Cayman S Black Edition’s top speed is two kilometers per hour (1.24 mph) faster than that of the Cayman S – 279 km/h (173 mph) with the manual transmission and 277 km/h (172 mph) with the PDK respectively. The Cayman S Black Edition is not just more sportily agile in terms of its longitudinal dynamics but laterally as well. Among other factors, this is attributable to the Boxster Spyder wheels in black, which with a diameter of 19 inches are not just one inch bigger than the standard Cayman S wheels but are also half an inch wider than the optional 19 inch wheels on the Cayman S. The tyre sizes fitted are 235/35 ZR 19s on the front axle and 265/35 ZR 19s on the rear axle. With its comprehensive and particularly high-quality equipment, the Cayman S Black Edition also caters for exceedingly exacting demands. For example, Bi-Xenon headlights with dynamic cornering lights and LED daytime running lights are just as much part of the basic specification as are automatic anti-dazzle interior and exterior mirrors with integrated rain sensor. Driver and front seat passenger sit on black partial leather seats with Porsche crest on the headrests; climate control ensures a comfortable temperature. The driver pilots the Cayman Black Edition by means of a Sport Design steering wheel, the cruise control makes driving at constant speed a more comfortable and economical experience. The color scheme of the limited edition sports coupe is consistent to the smallest detail: the dashboard trim is black as are the gear lever/selector trim and the instrument dials in the instrument cluster. The door entry guards emblazoned with the lettering “Black Edition” are made of stainless steel; the glove compartment lid bears the badge proclaiming the limited edition status. Equipped with Sound Package Plus, the Cayman S Black Edition’s infotainment systems are controlled via Porsche Communication Management (PCM). This also includes, for example, the navigation module and universal audio interface (AUX, USB, iPod). Mobile phone integration is already enabled. In all, the Cayman S Black Edition features the Porsche Comfort, Infotainment and Design packages, offering a price reduction into the bargain. With country-specific equipment, the Cayman S Black Edition costs 67,807 euro in Germany including VAT. Related posts: |
Audi wins International Engine of the Year Award 2011 for 2.5-liter TFSI Posted: 18 May 2011 07:59 AM PDT A jury of 76 motoring journalists from around the world has voted the Audi 2.5-liter TFSI as the “International Engine of the Year 2011” in the 2-liter to 2.5-liter category. This engine therefore retains the award that it won last year.
The 2.5-liter unit fitted to the Audi RS 3 Sportback and TT RS Coupé and Roadster features both turbocharging and FSI direct gasoline injection technology, two of Audi’s core technologies. With a displacement of 2,480 cubic centimeters, this engine produces 250 kW (340 hp) between 5,400 and 6,500 rpm and peak torque of 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) from 1,600 to 5,300 rpm. International Engine of the Year jury members said of the 2.5-liter engine: “This is certainly the best turbocharged engine in recent years. Torque, power, and great sound – this engine has it all! It is a powerful, visceral reminder of the original quattro rally racing engine that put Audi on the map.” Developed by quattro GmbH, the Audi TT RS Coupé can sprint from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.3 seconds (Roadster: 4.4 seconds) and both the Coupè and Roadster have an optional top speed of 280 km/h (174 mph). Audi now offers the same engine that powers the two TT RS models in the RS 3 Sportback. It takes 4.6 seconds to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) – a best-in-class performance figure. Its governed top speed is 250 km/h (155 mph). This is the seventh category win in a row at the International Engine of the Year Awards for Audi TFSI technology. Between 2005 and 2009, the Audi 2.0-liter TFSI engine has won the award in the 1.8 to 2.0-liter category. - Audi AG Related posts: |
VW to launch Quicar car-sharing program in Germany Posted: 18 May 2011 07:50 AM PDT Volkswagen AG plans to launch a car-sharing program called Quicar in Hanover, Germany. The project aims to benefit from the success of car-sharing schemes such as BMW AG’s DriveNow and Daimler AG’s Car2go and will be aimed at urban customers. The scheme will be launched in the third quarter, using 200 Golf BlueMotion cars available for pick-up and drop-off in 50 locations around the city. In the medium term, this number could reach 100 and other vehicles such as the Caddy and Beetle could be added to the fleet, VW said. Customers will be able to reserve a vehicle on the Internet, or via a call center, up to five minutes before the car is needed. They can then access the car using a chip swipe card before entering a PIN number inside the car to activate the ignition system. Christian Klingler, VW board member for sales and marketing, said the service will be aimed at private customers, students and authorities as well as commercial users. “Highlights of the project featuring our particularly efficient models include high vehicle availability and excellent functionality of the overall concept,” Klingler said in a statement. All cars in the scheme will be fitted with navigation and entertainment systems and customers will be issued with a personal memory card, allowing them to save individual destinations or routes. No details on pricing have been given for Quicar. Car-sharing schemes are growing as some customers, especially young adults in urban centers, place much less importance on owning a car compared to previous generations, according to market researchers. Frost & Sullivan estimates that the number of people using car sharing services is expected to grow to 5.5 million in Europe and 4.4 million in North America by 2016. Volkswagen rival Peugeot established a car-sharing program called Mu in cities in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK, and Belgium last year and will expand the service to most European cities with 300,000 or more inhabitants by the end of 2013 as it seeks to become a market leader. BMW currently is introducing a car-sharing scheme with Sixt, Germany’s biggest car rental company, in Munich and Berlin that will be extended across Europe and possibly to the United States. The venture offers for BMW 1 series and Mini cars and aims to win 1 million customers by 2020. Daimler launched Car2Go in Ulm, Germany, and Austin, Texas, and expanded the scheme to Hamburg in April. Under the scheme drivers can rent a Smart ForTwo for short or long trips. Related posts: |
Volkswagen Group Research makes the invisible visible with INTERSAFE-2 Posted: 17 May 2011 09:27 PM PDT Working in collaboration with other vehicle manufacturers as part of the INTERSAFE-2 research project supported by the European Commission, Volkswagen Group Research has developed a range of innovative systems to assist drivers at intersections. Based on vehicle-infrastructure communication, the systems give drivers information not only on the visible surroundings, but in particular also on objects that are hidden from sight. Innovative road junction assistance system unveiled in WolfsburgThe systems automatically detect dangerous traffic situations at road junctions and enable appropriate assistance for the driver in circumstances of relevance to safety. At these often time-critical moments, the driver receives a targeted audible and visual warning and the brake is briefly applied. The driver always retains complete responsibility and has control of the vehicle. Intersections are major black spots for accidents with injuries in inner cities. “The Group’s own accident research has been able to analyze in relation to this that it is especially miscalculations of speed and distances, plus a failure to observe red lights or stop signs, that cause accidents with sometimes serious consequences. The Intersafe-2 project is therefore very important in order to ameliorate such situations in inner cities in the future,” stresses Professor Jürgen Leohold, Head of Volkswagen Group Research. “In light of the ongoing growth of urban mobility with all sorts of different people involved, plus social trends, such as the increasing age of society, the importance of assistance functions of this kind will become ever greater.” Based on a Passat CC, the prototype built by Volkswagen Group Research is equipped with five assistance functions developed specifically for road junctions: left turn, right turn, intersection crossing, red light and stop sign assistants. If a driver breaks any of the appropriate rules of the road, these functions warn them in three stages of escalation: first an audible warning, then a visual one and finally by a jerk on the brake. To test the systems, the necessary equipment for detecting pedestrians and vehicles was installed at the junction of Breslauer Straße and Wohltbergstraße in Wolfsburg. The equipment consisted of laser scanners, infrared sensors and WLAN as the communications technology. This technology was tested for a future intersection assistant over recent months using specially equipped prototype vehicles. The INTERSAFE-2 European research initiative, supported by the European DG-ICT Commission, stands for ‘intersection safety’ and has a total budget of €6.5 million. The European Commission is contributing €3.5m, while the industry is putting in €3m. Eleven partners from industry and academia are involved, based in six European countries. Scheduled to last for three years, the aim of this collaborative research is to increase road safety at intersections. The INTERSAFE-2 partners are: BMW Group, IKA, INRIA, NEC, SWARCO, TRW conekt, VTT, SICK (project coordination), Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, Volvo Technology, VTT and Volkswagen AG.
