Bug Life feature on Stance Is Everything Posted: 09 Jul 2012 12:18 PM PDT Just over a year ago we brought you the film Low n’ Slow from Stephen Brooks. At first glance we thought these Bugs were those Bugs but come to find out, they are not. Equally impressive, the two ’61′s feature drastically different themes. Lukasz went the way of the classic two-tone, which by-the-way was not a factory option on Type 1′s. Slapping on a 4″ narrow beam, adjusters, drop spindles and white-walled 145′s up front / 160 out back. Paul kept the used daily driver look yet has a lot of TLC underneath as the pan etc. needed it. He went with a 5″ narrowed beam up front and pulled two notches out of the rear. No word on engine work so we’ll go with stock. *The “Bug” and “Beetle” are/were informal names. On paper, it was the Volkswagen Type 1 or simply Volkswagen for marketing etc.. On the road, it was called the Kafer which means Beetle in German. This stuck and Volkswagen has used it since. Flying Lizards win GT at Lime Rock Posted: 09 Jul 2012 09:03 AM PDT Patrick Long and Joerg Bergmeister brought the No. 45 in for the GT win at today’s Northeast Grand Prix at Lime Rock Park. It’s the first win – and the first podium finish – for the Lizards this year. It’s the team’s fifth win at Lime Rock since 2004. Sister Porsche No. 44 finished ninth in class in the 2 hour and 45 minute race. In the No. 45, Patrick Long started third on the GT grid. He held his position on the crowded start with the No. 02 ESM Ferrari in P1 and the No. 17 Falken Porsche in P2. The No. 44 started in tenth, with Marco Holzer behind the wheel. An early race full-course yellow gave both Lizards an opportunity to pit for a fuel top up under yellow. Patrick was still P3, with Marco now up to P7 in the No. 44 at the time of the pit stop. After the fuel stop, Patrick was now P4. The No. 02 was P1 and the No. 17 was P2: neither car had pitted during the previous yellow. The No. 3 Corvette was P3. On the next restart, Long was able to get by the Corvette to take P3. Shortly after the No. 17 fell back with a tire puncture and Patrick moved to P2. Nearing the end of Patrick’s sting stint, the No. 02 finally pitted, and Patrick took the GT lead. Long explained, “I feel like a huge weight fell of our backs today. When there are long gaps between victories it makes a win that much sweeter, and today is no exception. From the drop of the green, everyone on the team hit their marks: that’s tough to do at Lime Rock. Our strategist Thomas Blam’s call to pit for fuel only during the early yellow and then run for more than a complete stint on one set of tires proved to be the right call. It was tough to hang on at the end my stint but I was determined to turn it over to Joerg in P1.” Just past the 90-minute mark, Long pitted, still in P1, for tires, fuel and driver change to Joerg Bergmeister. Bergmeister headed out with the No. 01 ESM Ferrari now in the lead, and the No. 3 and 4 Corvettes close behind Joerg, in P3 and P4, respectively. The No. 01 pitted for fuel, but did not make it out of the pits in front of Joerg on track, and Bergmeister took the GT lead again. Over the next hour, Bergmeister held off both Corvettes and the No. 02 Ferrari through several full course cautions and restarts as the four cars ran nearly nose to tail. With ten minutes left to go in the race, a final full course caution finished the race under yellow, with Bergmeister taking the win, and No. 3 and 4 Corvettes P2 and P3. Bergmeister added, “Finally, a flawless race for the No. 45! It’s really good to be back on the podium. The team did an incredible job. Patrick made it easy for me: he turned the car over in P1 and I just had to maintain the lead and drive it home. Michelin gave us a great tire – many of the cars had tire issues today and we were able to complete the race on two sets of tires with no problems.” Meanwhile, the No. 44 had cycled through its driver lineup as Holzer turned the wheel over to Seth Neiman early in the race, then took over again just past the one-hour mark. Holzer had an uneventful final stint and finished ninth in class. Team principal Neiman summed things up, “After all of the issues we had last month at Le Mans, and seeing the way that the team came together at that grueling event, I had a feeling that when we returned to the ALMS we would regain our form. I am so proud of the crew, the support by our partners, and of course the awesome drives by Joerg, Patrick, and Marco. Now we need to keep this momentum going forward; it will be a long and certainly very exciting summer of GT racing.” Photos: © 2012 Darren Pierson/DPerceptions BUY PRINTS - Flying Lizards Related posts: You're reading Flying Lizards win GT at Lime Rock originally posted on oneighturbo.com. Team Falken take chances on tires at Lime Rock Park Posted: 09 Jul 2012 06:45 AM PDT Round 4 of the American Le Mans Series presented by Patron was a bittersweet event for the Team Falken Tire. Accelerated shoulder wear on the left rear tire due to heavy load forced the team to pit and change tires more often than expected, costing the team the opportunity to move up through the GT field. The team stayed ahead of four other cars to finish seventh in the GT class. During the six week “Le Mans” break, the team held two tests at Road Atlanta and Mid-Ohio, focusing on tire development and overall car balance, and the team felt optimistic about the advances made. “The performance gains we had at Mid-Ohio were real,” said Program Manager Derrick Walker. “Why they didn’t repeat here was troubling at the moment.” The trouble started 40 minutes into the race when starting Falken driver Bryan Sellers noticed a vibration in the rear of the 2012 Porsche 911 GT3 RSR. “Before that, everything was fine,” said Sellers. “The balance of the car wasn’t bad, we were only lacking a little bit of overall grip to the other guys. We could manage over a stint to stay roughly with the same lap times.” Vibrations being not an uncommon occurrence in motorsports due to regular tire wear, the team did not pit, but stayed focused on tire pressures. Shortly after in lap 35, the team called Bryan in as the pressure in the #17 Porsche left rear tire rapidly dropped, forcing Sellers to limp into pit lane. “With the loss of pressure we obviously realized we had a different kind of vibration, and a different kind of problem,” said Walker. “From that point on, we were in total experimental mode.” For the remainder of the race, the team cautiously watched as the left rear continued to show accelerated wear. The Falken crew members stayed on call at all times, ready instantly to jump over the pit wall and be prepared for any kind of situation at any time. On lap 92, Porsche Factory driver Wolf Henzler got behind the wheel with the best set of tires the team had all race. Overall the team pitted four times during the 2 hour and 45 minute endurance race, using different compounds and constructions from start to finish. “We went through the whole range of different constructions and different compounds,” said Walker. First and foremost a tire development program, Falken Tire made great strides in the advancement of the Falken Azenis R1 Slicks. In ultimate tire set up, the goal is softer rubber with more grip. However, this leads to accelerated levels of wear, forcing the developers to find a soft rubber that lasts for the longest period of time. “We learned a lot from this event. It will help us better understand what we’ve got in our tires for Mosport.” “We had a tough race today,” said Henzler. “We couldn’t finish as we expected, but only thing we can do is keep working hard and test tires and try to get better for the next races.” Round five of the American Le Mans Series takes place at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park for the Mobil 1 presents the Grand Prix of Mosport July 21–22.
