FIA GT1 teams set for Algarve roller-coaster ride

The beautiful Grid gals at FIA GT1 2011 Autodromo Internacional do Algarve

The battle of the brands resumes in Portugal next weekend when the fifth round of the FIA GT1 World Championship takes place at the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve.

The undulating 4.692km (2.915 mile) circuit is known for its roller-coaster layout and provides a stern test for drivers and puts the emphasis on drivability for cars.

Located in Portimao, the Portuguese circuit opened its gates in 2008 and has since become a popular facility with the world of motorsport. A regular feature on the GT1 World Championship calendar, it has provided some thrilling races.

#33 Belgian Audi Club Team WRT Audi R8 LMS Ultra - Frank Stippler

This season, the four events held to date have been dominated by four different brands. At Nogaro, France for the opening round, the weekend belonged to Audi, represented by Belgian Audi Club Team WRT, as they completed a one-two finish in both races.

At the second round in Zolder, Belgium it was the turn of Exim Bank Team China Porsche to grab the headlines. In Navarra, Spain for round three, Hexis Racing McLaren, which had been plagued by electronic issues in the preceding two rounds, finally laid the gremlins to rest.

In Slovakia for the fourth round, the Vita4One Racing BMW Z4 took victory in the Championship Race.

For Algarve, there will be a revised Balance of Performance so the racing is expected to be highly-competitive once again.

The centre of attention for local fans will be Alvaro Parente in the Hexis Racing McLaren MP4-12C. “It’s great to race at home in front of my own fans,” the Portuguese driver said.

“I will have some family and friends coming along to support me. The team is doing well. It would be good to put on a good performance in Portugal

.

“It’s a challenging track for drivers. It’s uphill and downhill and has some tricky corners and it generally provides good racing. This weekend will be no exception.”

The ALL-INKL.COM Münnich Motorsport Mercedes team, which has scored consistently this year, leads the teams’ standings heading to Portugal while Vita4One Racing BMW’s Michael Bartels (DEU) and Yelmer Buurman (NLD) lead the drivers’ classification.

Nicky Pastorelli (NLD), who partners Thomas Jager (DEU) in the No.37 Mercedes, is looking forward to the challenge of Algarve.

“From a driver’s point of view, it’s a really nice track. It’s technical, it has slow corners, fast corners,” he said. “Our problem is the long straights so we need to be quick in the infield sections to compensate for that. If we can find some top speed that will definitely help us.

“We need to keep fighting to protect our lead in the teams’ championship.”

Fellow Dutchman Buurman will draw on past experiences at the circuit this weekend. “My first experience in Algarve was with Superleague in 2010. It’s a really nice track, very exciting. It’s not an easy track if you are racing there for the first time as it takes a while to learn,” he said.

“Having been there before I know it pretty well. Of course I will be in a completely different car this time. I think the BMW will be quite OK there. Hopefully we can go for the podium again and maybe the win.”

#25 Reiter Engineering Lamborghini Gallardo LP600 - Stefan Rosina

Darryl O’Young (CHN) in the Reiter Engineering Lamborghini is a fan of the region. “It’s always nice to visit Portugal – great weather and a nice environment,” he said.

“I was there for the World Touring Cars so I know the track. It’s hard to say how the Lamborghini will perform.

“It seems that different circuit characteristics suit different cars with the way the Balance of Performance is set up and that means everyone can have a chance at a different circuit. Our car has been consistent throughout. We are not always the quickest car but we’re always in the top five or six so that’s a good platform for us to think about the podium and wins.”

Belgian Audi Club Team WRT’s Laurens Vanthoor is on a steep learning curve as a newcomer to the circuit.

“I’ve never been to Algarve before but I’ve heard it’s a really nice track,” he said. “I have some work to do beforehand with videos and simulators. It will be a challenge for the drivers because it will be hot.”

AF Corse’s Francesco Castellacci is looking for an upturn in fortunes for Ferrari. The Italian made a successful visit last year as part of the FIA GT3 European Championship.

“I had a good experience in Algarve last year in the FIA GT3 European Championship with Ferrari. I took pole and finished second so I have good memories,” he said.

“I think the Ferrari will be very good because it’s a fast circuit with lots of ups and downs a bit like Mugello in Italy. We are really looking for a strong finish this weekend.”

VLN Reinoldus-Langstreckenrennen to provide surprises this weekend

Posted: 06 Jul 2012 07:26 AM PDT

Start of the VLN Rundstrecken-Trophy on June 23rd

The first half of the VLN endurance racing championship season at the Nurburgring will be concluded on 7th July with the 52nd ADAC Reinoldus-Langstreckenrennen. And even though the previous four exciting races have already provided some special highlights this year, the fifth round may well give still some surprises.

In addition to regular driver Claudia Hurtgen (Aachen / Germany) and the champion of the Middle East Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge, Abdolaziz Al Faisal (Saudi Arabia), Klaus Abbelen (Baarweiler / Germany) will join the team as guest driver in the Bavarian sports coupe. For the experienced hobby driver who is normally competing together with his live-partner Sabine Schmitz (Barweiler / Germany) in the popular Frikadelli Porsche, this participation in the Z4 represents the possibility to look at something different.

By the way, Sabine Schmitz will as usual contest the race together with Christopher Bruck (Cologne) and Patrick Huisman (Netherlands) in the team-owned GT3 Porsche.

A fresh wind is also blowing in the last winning team, the Phoenix Team. The local heroes from the village of Meuspath nearby the Nurburgring have again entered two highly competitive Audi R8 LMS ultra which will be driven by Christer Jons (Ingelheim / Germany) and Luca Ludwig (Bornheim / Germany) as well as by Christopher Haase (Kulmbach / Germany) and Christopher Mies (Heiligenhaus / Germany). A 100 percent identical success of Marc Basseng (Neusalza Spremberg / Germany) and Frank Stippler (Bad Munstereifel / Germany) who scored the victory at the fourth race is hence excluded.

Andreas Gulden (Reifferscheid / Germany), former Formula 3 driver and chief instructor at the Nurburgring Driving Academy, will make his debut in the team with the SP7 Porsche. Marco Seefried (Wemding / Germany) and Marco Busch (Bensheim / Germany) will complete the team in the Porsche 911 with the eye-catching design. Seefried will be one of the double starters. Together with Marc Hennerici (Mayen / Germany) and Dennis Busch (Bensheim / Germany) he will also drive the Timbuli-GT3-Porsche.

Endurance racing expert Jorg Viebahn (Engelskirchen / Germany) will start in the very competitive Porsche Cup class with a new Porsche 911 GT3. The team is run by the Pro Sport Team based in Herschbroich / Germany which is also responsible for the participation of the Seat Leon Supercopa, for the first time in the current season driven by Anders and Jonas Carlsson from Sweden. The two Scandinavian drivers are entered in class SP3T (VLN Specials up to 2000 cc cylinder capacity with turbo).

Jurgen Freiburg and Norbert Kraft (Hagen / Germany) will contest the race on Saturday with their classical VW Corrado, entered in class H2 (Group H up to 2000 cc cylinder capacity).

The 52nd ADAC Reinoldus-Langstreckenrennen over the distance of four hours will start at 12 o’clock. The grid positions will be determined in the timed practice to take place between 08:30 and 10:00hrs on the same day.

Flying Lizard returns to Lime Rock Park this weekend

Posted: 05 Jul 2012 11:53 AM PDT

Last year saw a wet ALMS Lime Rock Park for the Flying Lizards no44

The Lizards are back in the U.S. for round four of the ALMS season, the 2012 Northeast Grand Prix, which gets the green flag this Saturday, July 7 at Lime Rock Park. The Lime Rock race follows closely on the heels of the 24 Heures du Mans, in which the Lizards finished fourth in GTE Am in the No. 79 Porsche (read the Le Mans race report). For this Saturday’s race, the driver lineup will be Joerg Bergmeister and Patrick Long in the No. 45 Flying Lizard Porsche and Seth Neiman and Marco Holzer in the No. 44.

With seven races left on the ALMS schedule, the Lizards need a radical change of fortune after a tough season start that has put the team far down in the GT points standings.

Flying Lizards no45 pit stop at Lime Rock Park in 2011

Flying Lizard chief engineer Craig Watkins said, “Historically, we’ve had fast cars at Lime Rock: the No. 45 has finished on the podium every year since 2004 and won four of those races. It’s a very short race weekend and we don’t have much track time so we’ll have to hustle to get to our race setup. We need to have a good race here in order to get back into the points chase; our top priority is to have mechanically solid and issue-free cars this weekend.”

No. 44 engineer Steve Conover added, “Lime Rock is narrow and short, with a relatively low top speed; most of the circuit is actually a turn so there is a fair amount of lateral acceleration. We expect to see the Porsches perform well here in the high downforce configuration that we run. The 2012 aero package should also be a good fit for Lime Rock, although we haven’t yet tested it here. Because of the short laps, the large number of turns, and the heat, tire management will also be a focus on Saturday.”
