Sold Once: 1947 Packard Clipper Club Sedan Posted: 25 Nov 2012 02:54 AM PST Chrises Cars - Sold Once: 1947 Packard Clipper Club Sedan This 1947 Packard Clipper Six Club Sedan is described as an unrestored, one-family-owned, 53k-mile example that was stored in Arizona for many years, which probably helps account for its clean condition. Bought new in Detroit, it spent most of its life there and was shipped to Phoenix in the late 1980s when its original owner — a Packard body designer — retired. Find it here on eBay in Phoenix, Arizona with the reserve met.
The 1947 Clippers had styling carried over from 1942, differing only in detail. Ownership of this car reportedly was transferred to the owner of a storage facility to settle years of unpaid bills after its original owner passed away. The seller says the car appears to have been repainted, possibly in the 1970s, and that there is paint shrinkage in spots. The grille, bumpers and body chrome are said to be in good shape, though the grille shows some pitting. The Coker whitewalls are new. Packard interiors of this vintage were known for their high quality and the interior of this car reportedly shows very little wear. The upholstery and wood-grain-painted dashboard look practically new, lending credence to the reported low mileage. The car has a radio and heater/defroster. The transmission is a column-shifted 3-speed manual. Under the hood is Packard's 245.3 -cubic-inch flathead six rated at 105 horsepower — unchanged from 1942. The engine is said to start and run well, but the car has not been driven since being removed from storage. The engine looks clean and original and though the factory air cleaner isn't shown in the photos, it does come with the car. It looks like it would take very little to make this car road-worthy, which could make it a good buy compared to the expense of restoring one. We'd change the fluids, rebuild the brakes, attend to any other mechanical needs and drive it. Black Eyes: Modified 1974 AMC Javelin Posted: 25 Nov 2012 02:54 AM PST Chrises Cars - Black Eyes: Modified 1974 AMC Javelin This 1974 AMC Javelin started life as a white car with a green interior, and is now Porsche Braun Kuppfer with a black interior, a combination that doesn’t sound good on paper but is working well in the photos. The seller has owned the car for 15 years and says it's been driven just 150 miles since the makeover. A couple of details are a bit modern, but overall this looks like a quality build of a model that we hardly ever see enhanced. Find it here on Craigslist in Shakopee, Minnesota for $25k.
Several Javelin AMX pieces were added including front and rear spoilers, functional cowl induction and an NOS grille. Underneath, the car sports a custom WSC Motorsports coilover front suspension with polyurethane bushings. The car also has 13” disc brakes with aluminum calipers in front and a Wilwood master cylinder. The rear suspension and brakes were unchanged, which we’d have to drive to judge. On the surface it seems like a massive braking differential between front and rear. A Currie 9″ with more Wilwood hardware out back would have been more expected. The Vintage Wheel Works alloy wheels really do well here, and the silver color plays nicely with the exterior paint. The interior has been updated with a custom dashboard that features Autometer gauges and what the seller calls a “pseudo carbon fiber inlay.” We’d sell off these parts and add a Sun Tach and Stewart Warner dials or even swap in a full factory AMX gauge assortment. A new shifter from AMXMGS works the Borg-Warner T-10 4-speed. The AMC 401 V-8 has been bored .30 over and sports a forged crank and connecting rods. It has such goodies as Edelbrock aluminum heads, Harland Sharp 1.6 roller rockers and a Comp Cams 280H camshaft. The car came from the factory with a 360 engine but the 401 was available an option, rated at 255 horsepower. This built 401 no doubt is much more powerful. This Javelin looks great and could be even better with a few small cosmetic changes. Not every Javelin needs to be red, white, and blue like the Thras-Am cars… it seems that this one could scare off plenty of Mustangs and Camaros even in unsuspecting brown. And lastly, what is the deal with the black headlight covers? The post Black Eyes: Modified 1974 AMC Javelin appeared first on Chrises Cars - Bringing You The Latest Motoring News And More |
La Carrera Panamericana Veteran: 1957 VW Beetle Posted: 25 Nov 2012 02:54 AM PST Chrises Cars - La Carrera Panamericana Veteran: 1957 VW Beetle 11/24/2012 Update: This Carrera Beetle has been re-listed by the same seller, this time with the Buy-It-Now reduced to $20k. Find it here on eBay. Special thanks to BaT reader Geoff A. for this update! From 8/28/2012: This 1957 VW Beetle was professionally built from the ground up and campaigned the La Carrera Panamericana Mexican road race in 2009. All work is said to have been done by racers who build for the Baja 500 and 1000. Gary Faules’ well known Carrera blog featured the car and shows pics of it at the event here. The car is now
The Beetle is said to have received a brand new pan and a custom 6 point chromoly cage. Both bumpers are said to be pinned for quick release, and front and rear skid plates were added. The car was then painted inside and out in a metallic BMW silver grey with clearcoat. If it were our build we may have gone with a bright period primary color, but this is purely subjective and the car looks great as is. The interior features Corbeau suede seats with 6 point belts, quick release Nardi steering wheel, fire suppression system, and custom leather cargo bags. Extensive instrumentation has also been installed, as well as a re-built Halda Tripmaster and custom wiring. A 10 gallon fuel cell with water separator, 2 rotary fuel pumps, and a Webasto type roof round out the modifications. The motor is said to be a fresh 1835cc VW motor with less than 500 miles on it. It’s fed by a pair of Dellorto 40 carbs, and features and SLR cam, ported heads, and a Setrab oil cooler. The suspension is said to be set up like a tuned 356, and features Koni shocks, front and rear sway bars, and 51/2″ wide front and 6″ rear Porsche wheels. The car now runs on all wheel disk brakes, and the tranny has been gone through and is said to have a slightly taller 4th gear to keep rpm down. As a bonus, the car comes with a custom light T-trailer for towing. While the La Carrera Panamericana is perhaps best known for Studebakers and other American heavyweights, this early Beetle makes for a fun alternative in keeping with the spirit of the event, and is certainly more interesting than an ubiquitous Mustang or Porsche. Based on the photos and description the build looks amazing, and anyone with a never-ending racing Beetle project should just make the smart move, buy this, and head south of the border for glory or bust! Must Watch: Pagani Huayra Story by National Geographic Posted: 25 Nov 2012 02:48 AM PST Chrises Cars - Must Watch: Pagani Huayra Story by National Geographic I’m sure you’ve seen tons of Pagani Huyra videos, mainly because we’ve featured tons of Pagani Huayra videos here. But this one is different. This is National Geographic’s account of the Huayra’s story, including some never seen before footage from inside Pagani factory, and exclusive interviews with Horacio Pagani, head mechanic David Lambert, and the million mile man, Pagani test driver Davide Testi. This is totally unmissable. The way Youtube works, they may remove the video soon. So watch it while you can: With all the attention that goes to every little detail of the Huayra, and the cost of all that R&D and high-tech, high-end material, the million Euro price tag of the Huayra suddenly sounds reasonable. It is fair to say that Horacio Pagani is the modern-day equivalent of Enzo Ferrari. He may not have Enzo’s Godfather-like charisma, but he makes his cars with the same passion, maybe even more, as Ferrari. Watching this footage, you can’t hep but admire this man’s work. Salute!

Following Rio and Sao Paulo, additional outlets are planned for the states of Santa Catarina and ParanĂ¡ within three years. Pioneer DEH-2200UB CD Receiver with iPod Direct Control and USB Input Posted: 25 Nov 2012 02:29 AM PST Chrises Cars - Pioneer DEH-2200UB CD Receiver with iPod Direct Control and USB Input It seem like very good product. I bought it and installed it for my little sister so I haven’t used it since then, but she’s extremely happy with it. What I like about it is the front USB and it allows you to adjust your bass, tremble AND mids, unlike my cheap radio (someone broke into my car and stole the nice one I use to have). Plus, it also outputs 22 RMS, most receivers seem to only output 18 rms or less. The sound quality is decent. My sister has stock speakers so I imagine its a lot better than decent since the previous radio she had was a Panasonic which the Pioneer seems to blow away according to her, but again with stock speakers its hard to tell, especially with very old stock speakers. Note: When your adjusting your receiver use the remote control, I found it to be extremely easy using the remote control, usually I find it easier the other way around. How Can an Engine Produce More Horsepower? Part I The Basics Posted: 25 Nov 2012 02:29 AM PST Chrises Cars - How Can an Engine Produce More Horsepower? Part I The Basics 662 A “basics” series of articles that deal with how to produce more horsepower from your engine. It is not an all inclusive article but just the basics. Part I is the theoretical part, continued with the Intake, Exhaust, and Engine Electrical system. autos, automotive, cars, performance, import, domestic, JDM, trucks, combustion, engine, horsepower, cylinders, fuel, oxygen, intake, exhuast, headers, manifold, filters, turbo, kits So you have a lead foot (and the tickets to show for it). You want to put the pedal down and have a little more power to the pavement (don’t we all). Then let’s talk about the basics of how your engine produces power, no matter if it is a 4 cylinder rice burner or a mammoth V-8 brimming out of your hood. Let’s start with the basics. As a Crew Chief in the United States Air Force, jet engine combustion was always taught in the simplest of terms: Suck, Squeeze, Bang, Blow. Yes it sounds like a sultry movie you would watch at a pay by hour motel, but it will all make sense in a second. Let’s start with the first part of our friendly Department of Defense taught equation. Literally your engine “sucks”oxygen. Now follow me on this one Homer, the air from the outside travels through an intake tube to a manifold all the way into the cylinder chamber. So why do we need more oxygen? Good Question. We need the maximum amount of ambient air to fill each cylinder chamber (no matter if you have 4 or 10 of them) on the down stroke of a combustion cycle with one of the magical ingredients that produce horsepower: you guessed it, oxygen . Why? Keep reading. At this point after our “suck?part of the equation is complete, we move on too the “squeeze?part. The valve that allowed the air to enter the cylinder chamber closes and the cylinder moves upwards and squeezes the air that was “sucked?in, at the same time fuel is introduced to the chamber at this point. Now if you where a Boy Scout or had gone through Combat Survival like I did, then you know you need three things to make fire. Air (oxygen), Fuel (gasoline), and Ignition (sparkplugs, more on these later). Now we are condensing the air and the fuel, making a nice packed (and denser) concoction for a nice fire, well really an explosion. How? Keep reading. I like fireworks, and that is what you have for the third part of our equation, “bang? Now we are cooking, with that oxygen and fuel all compressed and ready to explode. Remember I told you about the ignition, you know the sparkplugs. These little puppies produce a high intensity spark that are going to ignite that condensed concoction we have been talking about. Bang, ignition, an explosion happens and this is really where the horsepower happens. Why? Well at this point the cylinder is pushed down at X amount of force. That X amount of force is dependant on a lot of factors, which when you get right down to it is where horsepower is made. How? Because that little explosion pushes the cylinder down, in turn will push one of your other cylinders up and then that little explosion happens again. It’s a tough vicious cycle, rotating continuously, producing what is better known as horsepower. Let’s move on. So we have sucked, squeezed, banged and now we need to blow (you’re a pervert). The exhaust valve opens up and lets out the carbon dioxide that are left over after our little explosion inside the combustion chamber. Now this little cycle, which happens in milliseconds, is reproduced thousands of times a minute. You know your tachometer, RPM (revolutions per minutes), that is about how many times this cycle of combustion happens in one minute. There you go this is the very basics of how an engine produces power. If this is still a little confusing to you, well try to envision it as much as possible. Now on the next article we will talk about how we can improve this combustion cycle to produce the best possible combustion which in turn produces more horsepower from your engine.
